Tavernakaya is as fresh and authentic Japanese one can get in Madison. The best seats are up front with views of the Capitol Square. The location is stellar as well as seating options with high and low top tables. The service and staff here are friendly and very knowledgeable of the menu items. Appetizers, bowls, rolls and soups are well thought and organized for easy ordering. We came in at open and had the best service. Our order took less than ten minutes and was well presented. The cuts of fish were tasty and delightful. Must try the Salmon poke bowl with added spice. The Pork buns and Unagi sashimi were the table favorites with plenty of bites to share. The spicy tuna roll, popcorn chicken and Yellowtail tuna sashimi made a run for our top spot. This is a great lunch, date or dinner spot with great sound and kitchen prep. times. Tavernakaya gets a Bonus star for having New Glarus Spotted Cow on draft. Definitely a place to eat and take in the square. We'll return soon to Tavernakaya for Happy Hour.

Taverna/Umami was a great restaurant experience! Wonderful food, nice atmosphere, good service. I had the tonkotsu ramen with pork belly, marinated bamboo shoots, braised pork, nori, and an extra tea egg. The broth was to die for, the pork melted in my mouth, the egg was an umami explosion, and THE NOODLES! Oh the noodles…outstanding, tender but with “tooth” …tender but not mushy…a perfect noodle! Salmon Poké bowl was out of this world too! I added the jalapeño heat up…just the right heat to enhance the great flavors and fresh lovely salmon! A home run for sure! Others in my group had sushi, house salad, and pork buns…All delicious delicious delicious! For dessert we tried the tempura cheese cake…sounds odd…but “Omg delicious “ for sure. I also had the junmai ginjo Bride of the Fox sake. I’ve never had a sake as lovely and smooth as this. So delicious! It was a great night and we’ll be back for sure! I wish they took reservations instead of FCFS, but everything was worth the wait!

I was waiting to post this but since I'm not getting any response with the multiple calls and emails I've put out trying to get a hold of them for the service charge fee they don't tell you about...can't seem to get anywhere with getting a refund. Service was great and food was awesome, this is a huge inconvenience having to reach out multiple times. I don't appreciate being ignored. We're on 1 month since my visit and STILL no refund on my card. I won't be back just for all the hassle this has caused. UPDATE (OVER THREE MONTHS LATER): I really didn't think I'd be giving an update, however with how I've been treated, ignored, and hung up on, this deserves one last revision. I kept being given an email to send my inquiries to-all of which went unresponsive. Eventually, the email was closed and I was given an email that said it was invalid. When I talked to someone there almost 2 months ago, I was told I'd be sent a check in the mail for the EXTRA I PAID thinking I didn't tip enough before. Well that was two months ago, so I decided to call them last week. Of course the owners weren't in, because people like this are never around to manage their business, only to collect the money. My information was taken down and said to have been texted to the owners "right away", but it was homecoming week so they might not get back until Monday. I thought I'd give them an extra day to get back but no such luck. I cannot believe that this is how they treat their customers and expect them to come back-- If ignoring me was what they were hoping for, it definitely worked! This is...

Went here with my boyfriend after seeing they had multiple sushi rolls with no seafood (allergy). So, was excited to try it out one night. We went later at night, and dined inside as outside was bit full at the time. We were sat at a table by the host informing us of everything, and told us when we are ready we can order from the bar. We ordered drinks and some appetizers to start, and both came out as they were ready which I very much appreciate. After a little while the host informed us they were closing the kitchen, so if we wanted to order more food to put it in soon with the bartender. We looked over the menu for a few minutes, and walked up to the bar to order food. I also asked the bartender was the bar closing as well, or just the kitchen. The bartender didn’t really answer, and seemed kind of annoyed I was even asking. I ordered a second beer just in case, and finished ordering dinner. The bartender asked if I wanted to close, and I said yes thinking she would hand me the check so I could get my card (still at the table). When I asked if I could close when we finished dinner didn’t they seemed a bit inconvenienced by the whole thing. I went back to the table, finished eating, and before leaving walked up to close the tab with the bartender. My only thing for not giving it five stars was how annoyed the bartender was when I asked simple questions. This was my first time going here, and during covid so I get it. The food was good, veggie sushi was on point, and love their sake options. However, not sure if I will be dining in again probably...

Sorry to report but I was raise in Osaka and one thing I have to say is that Id' happen to like tradition when it come to specializing in making Okonomiyaki and I'm that guy that loves to make Okonomiyaki for his wife and friends but this place Okonomiyaki was missing some ingredients. I wasn't happy to serve that to my friend and she even agree that it wasn't as good as my Okonomiyaki. These Fusion restaurant can cause some confusion when understanding the ART of Japanese food and what I'd mean by that is, The right way and education way to understand the real taste of Japanese food.

This place I will never return back to and the servers are not professional and seem to be lost at time. I'm a Photographer that travels quite a bit all the time and does eat tons of difference cultural meals and this place Tavernakaya is just like some other fusion place and I will quote this "Nice try, but not good enough" By the way over price for Okonomiyaki when you can get that same meal anywhere in the world for less then $9 U.S dollars. Would you like for me to name 20 places in 20 difference cities?

No this is not a mistake, you did at one point have it on the menu when you first open. Listen I've been living in Madison since 2007 - This review was just updated from a few year ago, This review was transfer over to my other google reviews. It's funny how the owner is calling my ex-Japanese wife a liar and I, We went in the summer of 2016 but you open the year 2015. You had...
