This is a top notch exhibition! And, it was free admission! I had a wonderful time learning about the Civil War through a lifelike exhibition of men in uniform, in exhibits which make the experience come to life! The pictures, the stories, the personal artifacts, the medical tools and the ammunition examples! Wow! What an experience! This exhibition moved you through the succession of various wars with an emphasis of the role Wisconsin played in each. There were scenes set up that gave you a real experience of what it might have been like to see that bomber plane overhead, or be in the snow-covered landscape with what they had for provisions. There were model ships to depict how they contributed to the wartime efforts. Pictures of women's contributions, the multitude of soldiers Wisconsin sent into battle. From historical to more recent wars, every part of this museum touches your heart, offers a peak into the action and leaves you with a deep sense of both pride in the people that fought for our freedoms and a tenderness for those who lost their lives for ours. This museum is a must experience in Madison, WI. Additionally, the location directly across from our state's capitol, adds a...
Read moreI walked in expecting a solid local museum and left genuinely impressed. The location is easy to find right off the Capitol Square. Inside, the layout is open and inviting with lighting that makes the exhibits easy to take in.
The displays are well thought out, covering everything from World War I to current conflicts. Personal letters, photos, and artifacts make the history feel real and relatable. The stories are balanced between the well-known moments and the quieter, everyday experiences of service members and their families.
Staff and volunteers were welcoming and happy to share details about the exhibits. Everything is wheelchair accessible and the captions are clear. The rotating exhibit space is worth checking each visit since it often features unique stories you will not see elsewhere.
If you want to learn Wisconsin’s military history in a way that is personal and memorable, this is a place to visit. It is free, easy to navigate, and offers an experience that...
Read moreI spent about 2 hours here watching and reading all the information. It was very nice until the security guard (who might I add sat on a bench watching videos on his phone with the volume on full volume and for me was very distracting while I was trying to read a display) came in and turned off the video I was watching mid video. He told me it was because my video was (which I had no control over the volume) was too loud for the group of students who had just arrived and were being led on a tour on the OTHER SIDE of the museum. He very easily could have asked me not to turn on another video, but instead just decided to turn it off. 5 stars for the display, 1 star for the security guard who way overstepped his bounds. Very disappointing considering I don't live here and don't have time to revisit. I guess I won't know what happened from Vietnam on in Wisconsin. Very...
