I went to eat here about 6 years ago. The place had a couple of customers at one table and that was it. I stood there waiting to order and they completely ignored me. There was a menu so I looked at it. I was there for more than 5 minutes and they still didn't acknowledge me. There were two of them right there! After looking at the menu, I decided that it looked kind of pricey for Mexican food anyway, and I left. They never even said a word to me the whole time I stood there! Fast forward a couple of years. A guy I know tells me they have the best tamales in Madison, but you can only get them on Saturdays until they run out. So I go up there a few weeks later to get a dozen. I got up there around 3:30, which is late if you want the tamales. They had 11 left and sold them to me at a very fair price. They were the pork ones because their chicken ones go quicker. So anyways, those tamales were REALLY good and REALLY BIG! At 16 bucks a dozen they were a very good deal. So I started buying a dozen tamales every month or so. 2 tamales with some spanish rice and my mexican pintos and veggies, and I'm stuffed. Sometimes I would only eat 1 of the tamales because they were so big. This went on for about 9 or 10 months. Then it was kind of later in the day one Saturday and I called them to see if they had any tamales left. The guy could barely speak a lick of english but was able to tell me "no, no more tamales." As it was late in the afternoon, I figured they had run out. So the next Saturday I got up early and was at the restaurant about a half hour after they opened. The guys again didn't speak much english, but I was told "no tamales". It took me a few minutes to get enough information out of them that they quit making the tamales. So I would give them 5 stars if they still had them, but can only give them 3 since they don't make...
Read moreTired of the imitation of Mexican food – I recommend it to everyone ready for a great meal. You’ll need a translator to order off the menu but the 5 of us each tried different items and each was unbelievably good.
I was raised in Texas. I’ve been way down into Mexico. I’ve lived in Spain, Panama, and in many other areas of the world. Got to a hotel in Madison Wisconsin and did a quick search for Tacos on line. Took a chance on La Hispana Taqueria. I like trying new places because I’m tired of the Fast Food standards.
What I found there was the best Mexican food I’ve ever tried… mind you, I’ve made my own tamales and my best man in my wedding was Hispanic. I make some of the best enchiladas, rice, guacamole, nachos, and tacos so I have high standards.
I watched the chef make all the food on his grill and he even made the guacamole from scratch right in front of me with his gloved hands. I know I will always go back to this place with my family to eat when I am in town (which is twice a year)
Directions- East Washington Avenue Frontage Road to Columbus Lane / 2nd entrance to the left. Small shopping area on the right.
Hard to find - worth the search. It is a hidden gem.
Oh, did I mention Sodas (Pop, Coke, Drinks) from Mexico made with Cane sugar while we waited for the food to be made - kids...
Read moreI would give it 4 stars for food taste, but 2 stars for service and variety. I got the Carne Asada Mexicana and it tasted good... Not so much I'd drive a long way to get it, but if I was feeling like Mexican and was close by, I'd come here. The only other patrons were probably of Mexican heritage, so you know there's something there. The variety here is very small... I think they have 15 to 20 food items across the entire menu... And there are big pictures for 5 of the items (and not all of them are labeled).
As for the service, I asked for a coke and didn't get one (even though my date got her Mexican pop right away) until after I asked again when the food came out. We also waited a half hour for the server to come back to give us the bill, and then we got impatient and I started waving at the cook and server to get them to come over. The cook waved back at me one of the times, so he definitely saw me, but he didn't point it out to the server to see what we wanted... He just kept cleaning (we were the only ones in the store at the time). Eventually I went up to the counter and got him to give me the bill. We think the cook probably doesn't know English and the...
