We had stayed there before and it was a pleasant experience....not so much this time. When we arrived we noticed an unpleasant odor in the room. However, we were heading out to dinner so didn't really pay it much attention. When we got back wife mentioned it still smelled. She said it smelled like gas. I had a sudden onset migraine for no apparent reason and we called it a night. I woke up the next morning and I still had my headache and the room had a really strong odor of gas like there was a gas leak. My wife said she wasn't feeling good so I got dressed and went down stairs to inform the front desk. When I spoke to Jake he didn't seem too concerned about a potential gas leak but said he would sent Maintenance up to check it out. So I went back up stair. My wife went down to get something from Starbucks and when she came back up she said the smell was even worse so she went downstairs to the front desk to speak to Jake when again according to my wife didn't seem too concerned and said they could move us, but we were leaving in a little while so nothing was done. When she got back my son had woken up and he didn't feel well either. So we immediately started to pack up and leave. Maintenance never showed up and it took us about an hour to pack everything as we were flying home that day. When I we left I went back to pay and told Jake that no one ever came up to check. He informed me that they weren't supposed to come to my room they went to check on the odor elsewhere (which lead me to believe they knew about it ahead of me telling them) and said it was coming from another room. He didn't offer me an apology or even a discount for the fact that my family got ill from whatever it was. He attempted to get extra money out of us by screwing up the bill claiming that what I owed them was more then their confirmation email I got when I booked the room. At no point were they concerned or contrite in the fact that my family got sick from whatever was going on. I ended up calling the manager from the parking lot prior to leaving and spoke with him about what went on and his story about what it could be was different from what Jake told us. He didn't seem too concerned either that my family got sick. His response was classic. He would use this as a training tool to better train his front desk staff.....I believe I laughed out loud on the phone. In all I find it kind of ridiculous that some odor caused my family to get ill and when I reported it no one seemed concerned at all it was happening and at no point was anything done about it. Just pay my bill and move along.....I understand things like this happen but the fact that the staff at this hotel seemed to be unphased or concerned at all was probably the most disturbing and disappointing. Their actions guaranteed we won't stay there again...

Read moreWe booked the DoubleTree Madison East without knowing much about it other than it had good reviews and was a Hilton Hotel, which we definitely like. This was a quick one-night stay to relax before trekking to northern Wisconsin for Christmas. We checked in on the 22nd and were greeted by a delightful front desk staff – warm, friendly and welcoming. ||The front lobby is beautiful, modern and immaculately clean. The pool area was exceptional – large and inviting. There is a little convenience section where you can purchase snacks, drinks and even a few prepared salads. While I didn’t take photos, the double-queen room was clearly upgraded recently and again, very clean and inviting. Our room was on the 6th floor (600) and overlooked the highway but there was no noise coming into the room. The large bathroom had fantastic Crabtree & Evelyn products. No tiny bottles either – full sized bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and bath gel attached to the wall of the glassed-in shower. ||At the last minute, we decided to return to Madison on Christmas Day evening due to some bad weather and wanting to ensure we were able to get on our flight the next day returning home. We were so happy with our DoubleTree experience; we booked it again. As before, the front desk person was cheerful (despite having to work on Christmas evening), friendly and very accommodating when we asked for a late checkout. This time, we had a king room with sofa bed and liked the layout even better than before. If there are just two people traveling, it couldn’t better. Great work desk, the sofa bed was very comfy, and the bath was identical to previously. ||The location is very convenient, and you have every type of food within eyesight and minutes of you including McDonald’s, Chipotle, Chick-Fil-A, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, iHop, Outback, and a host of others. It’s only about 10 minutes from the MSN airport and 15-20 minutes to downtown/University of Wisconsin.||This is our new go-to hotel in Madison, hands-down. We will be back here again and couldn’t recommend it enough. (Kudos to the staff here, they are just phenomenal and such an asset to...
