D&J Fish and Chicken — Restaurant in Maplewood

Would rate a 3.5 out of 5. A big perk to this spot is they cook everything fresh to order. Shoutout them for doing that.

we placed a to-go order for a nashville chicken sandwhich, gyro fries with cheese and a few pieces of shrimp. I arrived and waited maybe 20 minutes (which doesnt bother me much plus he added an extra shrimp to make up for it so shoutout them) I got the food and I will say the lemon pepper is really good here. The nashville chicken sandwhich my friend said was a pretty soggy and maybe next time will just ask for it with just pickles, the mayo(y) sauce that was on it was a little runny and odd. And we LOVE saucy and mayo on sandwiches but this one was a little off. they only had two bites before it became too soggy to eat. The bun might have played a part into that as well a weaker part of the sandwhich for sure. we moved onto the gyro fries. They are decently good especially for the good price of $8.99. Only thing I would say was the cheese sauce was a little off, little bit of a weird taste/texture. Now the shrimp was good, batter had a texture I haven't had before but the taste on the shrimp was GOOD and I come from the south where shrimp is king. Overall the service was good, staff are friendly and responsive. I will be back to try out more some more...

I love the food at D&J's. It's probably not a top choice of places to go if you're trying to eat healthy as it's pretty much a fry-up joint. That being said - the gizzards are FANTASTIC. Chicken wings and catfish are good too! I've never been disappointed with the food I get from D&J. Most of the employees I've encountered have been friendly (in person) too. That being said, one might wonder why I only rate it three stars...

Well, I've called for a take-out order and been ignored, hung up on, had them put me on hold then take multiple orders or chit-chat with the in-store customers while I'm on hold and can still hear (this only has happened one time honestly), then also called and been told "I'm not taking phone orders right now. You have to come in." What?! If you offer this service and your system is working then that shouldn't be an issue.

Also, it's just a hole-in-the-wall. There are only a couple booths to sit in and most often are filled with people waiting for their take-out orders. Definitely not a place to go for the atmosphere.

Very Good food. Great Desserts. Been a couple of times so far no complaints. Accommodating, will prepare your food just as you want it. Nicer restaurant than other restaurants similar to this.

Update-I really liked this restaurant and wanted them to win...I have ordered from them twice through DoorDash once in February and last Saturday, times I have thrown up then last week my daughter also threw up.

Each time we ordered the sweet potato pie slices in February I had ordered the chicken wings with fries and got sick before ate the pie. I ordered from them again because I wasn’t sure I had gotten sick from them or not. Then last week I had ordered the gyro plate and had gotten sick after I ate the sweet potato pie the next day. My daughter had ordered the catfish dinner and ate the catfish and sweet potato pie the night before then the next day ate fries that came with the catfish and threw up after I did. I am really disappointed with the restaurant they seem to have really good food...but not that good if you get sick...
