The atmosphere is nice and the staff was nice. The food was very hit-and-miss. We ordered the sour soup, crab rangoons, salt and pepper tofu, and chicken pho.
The soup was good, and the rangoons were good. The pepper tofu was cooked perfectly and tasty, but the rice that came with it was dry and bland, and some of it was still a bit crunchy inside indicating it was not cooked.
The pho was the worst pho I've ever had. I eat a lot of pho, and I've never once had pho that I didnt like until eating here. I think chicken pho is the safest and most fair way to gauge a restaurants pho because its a staple. The chicken was slimy, like it came from a can, the broth was very bland, basically warm water. The noodles were too thin and overcooked. Additionally, one of the great things about pho is it typically comes with a large plate of fresh foods to add into your pho: bean sprouts, mint, jalapenos, etc. They brought out a coffee cup saucer with a pinch of veggies to add in. Very underwhelming when the pho misses completely the fresh element that makes the dish stand out from other soups.
If you told me that this pho is something that came out of a microwavable pack from Costco I'd believe you.
To make matters worse, they offer it in one size only, and that size happens to come in a tall and narrow bowl. You ever notice how ramen and pho come in wide flat bowls? Its to make it more practical to eat from. Its not cereal, and you don't eat it with a spoon.
Rant aside, its partially my fault for ordering pho at a Chinese restaurant. I just saw it front and center in the menu, and it was cold out, so I figured I'd go for it rather than try the lo mein. I wouldn't tell people to avoid this restaurant, but I would tell them to steer clear of the 'pho'.
I would go back to try some of the Chinese dishes, I just wont ever order pho here again, and I'd be willing to bet that 9/10 of these reviewers raving about the pho here have never eaten pho at a pho joint before, so they have no idea what...
Read moreOrdered Mongolian Beef with fried rice and a side of Lo Mein noodles. If you were to take some cheap parts of meat and boil it to where it swells and is water logged and then doused with some toilet water this is what it would taste like.
In fact it's debatable if I actually received beef or cat and I am seriously thinking of keeping this and taking it to the authorities next business day to see what type of meat it actually is.
To add insult to injury the fortune cookie was stale. Literally. And the stale fortune cookie was the best thing out of the $48.00 dollar mongolian beef entree w/ small side of noodles order.
My suggestion would be to fire your cook and do some serious soul searching on spending whatever it takes to find a chef that can actually cook and flavor your food properly.
It's hit or miss when you order food like this and this was a spectacular fail. I tipped 25 percent on the credit card payment along with another 5 spot when it was delivered and that's even after it took so long to get after ordering. Like twice as long as it should.
So I tipped 30 percent total. Obviously I'm aware the driver has nothing to do with the quality of the food I'm just putting this whole situation into perspective.
Waiting is no big deal it's the " bag in flames on my doorstep" disguised as Mongolian beef is the problem then taking it inside only to discover how sickening the food was is what's upsetting. Then not being able to eat it after spending that much money, being super hungry, and now having to sleep on a empty stomach because you just got bamboozled is like getting kicked in the balls and left out in the desert with...
Read moreWent to dinner (dutch) to celebrate a college graduation. They love House of Lu. We won't go back. Customer service is very poor. The waiter forgot that we had ordered soup. When it came it was lukewarm. The rice was lukewarm. Our entrees were lukewarm. Told the waiter that it was cold. He took it to warm (I assume in a microwave) and it came back still lukewarm. Talked to the owner - Johnny - who told me that there was an issue in the kitchen and that they had to leave the door open which kept the kitchen at 55º. He offered a fresh meal, a meal to take home, a drink, dessert, dessert for the entire party (of about 16 people). By now everyone had paid for their lukewarm meals. Johnny's response became a big negative. His offers were all the wrong answer to his dilemma. Johnny's offer should have been: "Your meal tonight is on the house and here's a gift card for dinner for two for a future visit. I hope that you will come back so that you can experience our excellent service." Johnny should have closed his service for the evening and gotten his kitchen problem repaired in time to open for service the next day. House of Lu lost a customer as well as anyone else whom we would have introduced to what we had been told was an excellent place to dine. Chef Irvine would have told him the same thing. There is nothing more dissatisfying than...
