If you have ever been to Honolulu you will know that it is littered with fancy restaurants, serving 15 course tasting menus, caviar, and sea urchin but Honolulu (and Hawaii as a whole) is becoming defined by its poke scene. Poke simply translates as āchunkā in Hawaiian and is instantiated by meat (usually fresh seafood) cut into small āchunksā and marinated. In its most traditional form poke utilizes aku (skipjack tuna) and heāe (octopus). Hold on a secondā¦before you start thinking Peruvian ceviche (such as is served at the perpetually busy Miraflores or Barranco districts) realize that poke does not traditionally utilize citrus as a curing agent but rather relies on its inherent freshness and various soy based sauces. The more recent movement of using pozu (citrus based) sauce is becoming more popular in the continental United States. The poke bowls served at Marionās Ohana Poke Shop are fresh and come with nearly endless accoutrements and several meat options for those who prefer to avoid seafood. The pickled radish, seaweed, and wasabi mayo were personal favorites. Perhaps you can even be braver than I and try the spicy gochujang sauce offered. The complex flavor profiles that hit me during my meal at Ohana Poke Shop transported me back to an old memory of my wife and I sitting on the corner of E Manoa Road and Hapala Street in Honolulu enjoying the delicious morsels of fresh tuna from Off the Hook Poke Market. One bite of a Ohana Poke bowl will have you feeling like family. Thanks for bringing a slice of...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis is a new find for me. It is on the outer edge of Marion in one of the newer stip malls. I saw it one day when I was driving by and thought I would give it a try. So a few days later, I went. I walked in the door and was immediately greeted by a young lady who was polite and nice. She asked a few questions to help us narrow down our choices. I got the Iowan bowl which has pork belly in it. She prepared our poke bowl quickly and efficiently. We both got regular size and found out that we could not finish it and ended up taking it home with us. The food was fresh, the pork belly cooked very well. The veggies has good crispness to them and the rice was cooked well. It was not crunchy and it was not overcooked. We both chose the white rice but they have brown rice and greens for the base if you want. You can pick from their preplanned bowls or you can create your own if you are feeling ducky for it. I would recommend this place for anyone that like fresh food and a bit of adventure. Some of the bowls have raw fish so just be aware. They do have vegetarian options and some pretty safe choices but also some choices that not everyone will jump on, such as the spam musugi, which I found that I liked mostly but probably wouldnt order every time I went. I would recommend this place as the food was fresh and well prepared, is different than most places and the people are friendly and polite. The price isnt too bad as we both ate twice off the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreFirst time going here and I was very impressed. Though the owner wasnāt around, her parents were present and gave helpful advice about how to place orders whether with a custom made entree or a special.
All of their ingredients are fresh; the vegetables are crisp and the meats are properly cooked (for the ones not served raw). Even if you donāt like sushi, they have cooked pork belly, shrimp, and tofu.
That said, the raw fish definitely has plenty of flavor. I ordered the Ohana Poke Bowl and my main protein - tuna - was likely seasoned if not marinated. Not that I mind though Iām not sure if it was a bit too salty by itself or because of the combination of eel sauce and spicy mayo. Either way, I still enjoyed it.
One small detail against the restaurant was that they were out of ginger (an ingredient in my lunch of choice) but pickled radishes served as an excellent substitute.
Some people claimed the protein options in their bowls were too little but I found it to be a solid amount for the price I paid. For around $13 a bowl, I got plenty of food.
Also, the Dole soft serve was a refreshing treat to round out my lunch. Some that was sweet but not overly so and tangy to contrast with my meal.
I donāt know how long this restaurant will stick around but Iāll be sure to make another visit soon.
Great customer service, excellent food, and quality standards. What more could...
