There don't seem to be many specialty coffee shops in/around Mary Esther, so Fernweh was an easy choice. Situated in a single story strip mall not far off the main drag, it's a simply stated spot with a handful of tables, counter seats, and a couple couches.
First visit was solid; avocado toast with egg was spot-on, but the coffee didn't really stand out as either good or bad... right in the average range. The music selection playing from the TV was good for background noise. Soon after arrival, "that guitar guy" came in and started playing; not obnoxious, but also not on the schedule of events. Bought a bag of beans on the way out that were supposed to be a medium roast, but ended up being pretty oily, more consistent with a dark.
Second visit, the avocado toast was still great. This seems to be a family run business, and the owner/spouse showed up with a little one. The guitar guy was again present; again, not obnoxious but could have done without. Finally decided to split when the TV channel was changed to kid shows. Would have ordered another coffee and read for a bit, but have already taken in enough children's TV programming to last a lifetime. Read moreMy friend (who is vegan) ordered avocado toast while I ordered an egg cheese and bacon English muffin. On the menu the avocado toast had an option to add egg but obviously my friend did not. When I got my sandwich I took a bite and was surprised when there was grape jelly on it because that was also not listed on the menu. The coffee is good but I’m disappointed that the food has ingredients wasn’t listed on the menu because the food listings are pretty self explanatory (avocado toast- you’d think it’s just those two things; egg, cheese, bacon- you’d think it would...

I'm always skeptical of trying new coffee shops bc I'm a bit of a coffee snob. My go-to is a flat white, which most places don't know how to make properly. I always ask first, and when I did the owner gave me a very detailed explanation on how it's made which sold me immediately. I also got the vanilla spiced brown sugar latte just to try a "regular" drink. Both were expertly made. He was very meticulous and put a lot of care into making the drinks. This is a great spot and I hope to see them...
