Love Sushi restaurant is a surprising hidden gem that one would never know to exist in this sleepy part of town. With ubiquitous Americanized sushi spots scattered across the US, Love Sushi seems to command a loyal customer following with their succulent, fresh tasting, relatively generous sushi sashimi offerings. And by loyal, I mean there are prior-Gaithersburg residents of whom I know a few who would drive from Virginia OR always plan a stop when passing by just to eat or grab takeout from Love Sushi.
What really sets Love Sushi apart is just their freshness and portions as the food you order is certainly not from commercial sushi factories. The sushi, sashimi taste like it is cut from the fish and not from defrosted pre-portioned sashimi-grade blocks, especially given the limited number of grilled fish collars available each day. And fried items (vegetable tempura, grilled fish collar) taste freshly prepared from scratch with no hint of heat-lamp dryness or off-putting par-cooking textures. Oh, and their miso soup uses real miso paste and is not watered down like some other places.
There is no unique species of seafood here; nor some fusion dish that you think might show up on some future food network episode; nor traditional Japanese technique by a Japanese imported chef. And once you discover that Love Sushi is owned & operated by Hongkongers, you might be inclined to find their Hong Kong food passion in your entree or takeout if you decide to stop by. Overall, this is pleasant food find to add to your list should you ever need a...
Read moreI am a vegetarian and I called to make a Order of avocado and cucumber rolls. I asked if I could have the sea weed on the outside instead of the inside she starts giving me attitude telling me that’s not how it’s made but yeah. I asked is the minimum order 6 or 12 piece? she said have you not been here before or something and why don’t you just say what you want. Ridiculous!!!!!!!! I told her she was being very rude and she should not be picking up the phone to speak with customers that way. I could tell it was an Hispanic lady from her accent that clearly works there. She gave the phone to another lady who I could tell was an Asian lady that worked there who was asking me what’s the problem while giggling. I could her the lady in the back ground calling me names. If you are having a great day and would not like your mood ruined pointlessly do not call this place or eat there. Mental health is important and we have a responsibility to call out these type of places that verbally abuse others and...
Read moreVery consistent and excellent value for sushi in this area. So far I've tried several places and Love Sushi remains my go to for casual sushi in this area.
The sushi:
The fish is pretty consistently fresh and generously sliced portions for nigiri. Occasionally there is a let down every 3 orders or so but for this price point that's pretty acceptable. Shiro maguro is always on point, but hamachi sometimes miss in frechness. Saba can be inconsistent at times but again very good in general and exceptional at this price.
The rice is consistently good with good flavor, texture and stickiness even for to go orders that sat for some time. They really do make their rice to sushi standards here a big plus for this price point.
The speciality rolls are consistent and definitely will satisfy more casual sushi lovers. The rolls are also generously big and usually 2 are enough to serve as a heavy meal.
Haven't tried their hot entrees yet, but will update this...
