February 7, 2025 - We needed a break from cooking, took the Grandkids to The Silver Diner in Frederick, MD ! ๐๐๐ผโค๏ธ A nostalgic trip back in time . . . Diners started 150 years ago!
The food is fresh, farm to table at reasonable prices. The decor still resonates with some of the art deco & retro look of the 30โs to 60โs . The jute box doesnโt play music at your table, but our grandkids dropped quarters into the top slot, and the quarters returned at the bottom tray! ๐๐๐ผ
The menu offers a wide variety of choices! From appetizers featuring $6 Crispy Brussel Sprouts, $8 Buffalo Wings, to $10 Crab cake sliders! They offer local craft beers, which I was disappointed no medium brown & red ales . . . most light summer golden ales. Thereโs classic cocktails, my daughter enjoyed her margaritas!
After ordering our entrees, the wait was a reasonable 15 minutes, or so. The kids loved their scrambled eggs, strawberries, chocolate waffles, and beef sliders w/fries. The adults enjoyed turkey & ham club, grilled Reuben sandwich, chicken salad sub, and my chef salad with grilled chicken was fantastic!
Our server, David wins best server! He joked with the kids, parents, and Grandparents! All with age appropriate humor! ๐๐๐ผ๐๐ผ Re-filling age appropriate beverages, napkins, and condiments! Fantastic David, kudos!
History of Diner
The diner concept goes way back to 1872. Walter Scott used a horse drawn wagon to sell food & drinks to folks at lunch time.
Later trains used dining cars to feed passengers. Early 1900โs, train cars & old trolly cars converted into diners! By 1913 Jerry Mahoney established first stationary diner in NJ ! Over time thousands of diners spread across the U.S.
New Jersey seems to be the Diner Capitol of the U.S. with over 500 diners. The 1930โs were the Golden Age for diners. Their style was often Art Deco & Retro by the 1950โs & 60โs. . . Steel & chrome bar stools & tile floors, with fancy jute boxes!

ย ย ย Read moreI never thought I would have a bad experience at Silver Diner but I did. My husband and I come here often enough ever since we moved to MD last year. This time was a terrible experience. We were both having a hectic stressful week and decided to have dinner at Silver as I love the all-day breakfast. The diner was empty when we got there however, they sat us right next to a table that looked as though a tornado just passed through and only hit that table. Out of all the empty tables, we were seated right next to it and had the pleasure of watching the busboy get it back to a reputable condition. Our waitress showed up and gave me a difficult time ordering a mimosa insisting that I needed to show ID and when I started pulling it up in my phone she enlightened me even further by stating it has to be a physical ID. Mind you I come here enough times and showing a picture of my ID, has always been sufficient. Secondly, ID is usually needed if there is some doubt that the customer is underage. I am 55 years old and yes I look younger but not anywhere under 30! My daughter is probably older than she is.
My husband said that he would have a mimosa as he had his ID but does not drink. ๐ She brought the mimosa and it was bad...it was beyond bad. It was room temperature and it tasted disgusting. The orange juice was probably old. Maybe she should have done a quality check as thoroughly as she did my ID check! When the food came the waitress, said to me that the biscuits were in the oven and if I wanted toast instead. I said no thank you. The food was not good. Needless to say, she never checked on our table again. Very poor service indeed. I am a big tipper but I told my husband not this time.
I'll probably go back again because I have never experienced such terrible service and food at Silver Diner before. I hope they are not lowering their standards but I'll listen to the red flags next time and leave if I encounter any.
I left with a terrible migraine, probably from that disgusting mimosa, even though I only took two sips of it, and became violently ill when I got home. Ended up with terrible stomach pains and vomiting. Had to take off work today and cleanse my system. This was probably the worst eating experience I...
ย ย ย Read moreI have been going to Silver Diner consistently for a few months now. I bring a friend of mine with severe disabilities too. When it comes to food, I have never had a bad meal. Everything is so good! Even if I don't think I will like it, I've enjoyed myself. Don't get me started on the milkshakes! My friend goes there mainly for the milkshakes! Now, onto the staff! For starters, everyone there has been EXCEPTIONALLY friendly, whether they are seating us, just saying hi, giving us our food, etc. We consistently ask for Keith to be our waiter. He is PHENOMENAL. My friend is Deaf and disabled, but not once has Keith treated her as anything less than a normal person. He goes out of his way to accommodate her and has built a bond with her, making her feel comfortable. He anticipates anything we need and is always three steps ahead of us. Fast forward to today, Keith was not working (sad face)! We still had a lovely, kind server, but when you have someone who knows you and anticipates things... well, here's where one of the managers, Penny, stepped in and saved the day. My friend got her milkshake all over her and the table, and I was trying to clean it up. Penny quietly came over and helped me with a wet paper towel and handed me more napkins and another damp paper towel for her shirt. Bottom line: Great food. GREAT staff. Keith and Penny are the best, and I will keep...
