Cracker Barrel Old Country Store — Restaurant in Mattoon

Went to the Mattoon Cracker Barrel Sunday the 3rd arriving at 12:00 noon. They were fairly busy, but it took only 15 minutes to get a table. Waitress took our drink order , brought them quickly along with cornmeal muffins and took our order. 20 minutes later my wife asked our waitress if our meals would be soon. She said yes, they were preparing them now and brought us refills. 20 minutes later we stopped the waitress and asked about the food; she said they had run out of bacon for my wife's bacon and egg hash brown casserole. (even though people who has come in after us had gotten their food, with bacon) 15 minutes later we got our food. I had ordered the country boy breakfast with dumplings and pancakes as my two sides. the dumplins were hot; everything else was lukewarm; the butter wouldn't even melt on the pancakes. The dumplings were hot, as I said, but most were stuck together in a congealed mass that was very doughy when I cut them apart. They had given me an order of the hash brown casserole, (which I don't like because of the onions) so they charged me $3.09 for the dumplings. I knew the pancakes had a $2.49 upcharge, but they were lukewarm. I didn't get the biscuits and gravy that was supposed to be with the meal, but it had been so long since I had ordered that I forgot it was supposed to be included. The steak tips had a strange taste to them. The eggs were okay, though not warm. Corn muffins were okay. The wifes meal wasn't hot; Everything (except the dumpling ) seemed as if they had been under a heat lamp for half an hour. Waitress came by and asked us if everything was okay. We said no and she said sorry. We've liked Cracker Barrel in the past, but the past few visits have suffered for the food quality. $44.00...

There are some inconsistencies in the quality of the food. Service is usually very good. I had the pot pie which was okay. Probably won’t order it again. The frozen ones at the store are better. Biscuits and apples were good.

We decided to give Cracker Barrel in Mattoon another shot since it's been a while since our last visit (see above review). Actually, it was worse this time. The service was really good - had a lovely waitress who was attentive. If not for that, I would've give one star. I ordered the pot roast special that was on the board. I got a small, cold piece of fat. I was only able to eat 2 small pieces out of it that wasn't complete blubber. It was cold and tasteless. I had a pile of fat left on the plate. It turns my stomach thinking about it. I had once ordered the pot roast and it was actually pretty good. That has been a while ago. The portion was very small, but it was tender. This time, it was sliced roast beef, not pot roast. I don't know if they messed up the order or if this is the new pot roast. It took a long time to get our food. The rest of my family's food looked about the same. No complaints from them, but not a lot of enjoyment coming from anyone and food was left on their plates. The bill was really high. Definitely not worth the price of the food. I wish we had gone elsewhere now. It will be a long time before I suggest Crackle Barrel. We've gone to really good CB's in other areas. The one in Mattoon just isn't consistent with...

Well, I wasn’t going to post a review as I had contacted the company, but seeing as the company hasn’t reach back out in a timely manner here we go. I was on lunch break and came in with my mom and my aunt who are both elderly, we were place in the farthest corner of the dinning room in the way back. Our server was absolutely amazing and attentive and tried to meet all our needs. But sadly that’s the only plus in this experience. We asked to speak with a manager and this poor girl tried very hard to make that happen but it still took almost 15 minutes for someone to come speak with us. This was after we had waited about 45mins to an hr for our food. When speaking with the manager about the wait she was very rude and talked down to us and snatched my to go box of food off the table stating she was comping it and I could just pay for my drink. When the server stopped by while the manger was there she was also very rude to our server and spoke down to her like the server didn’t know how to do anything and was the one messing everything up. I was absolutely appalled by the way this manger was speaking to staff and customers alike. Whoever this manager is definitely put a bad taste in my mouth when I think about coming here now.
