My wife and I checked into the Comfort Suites in Mattoon, IL, yesterday for a 3 night stay. This morning we went to begin moving my mother in law to a memory care center and, upon our return at 7:00, we found that none of the towels had been replaced and our room hadn’t been touched. I went to the front desk to find out why and was told that I needed to tell the front desk that I wanted service of my room. Seriously? ||The signs in the bathroom say that if we leave the towels on the floor they will be replaced with clean ones. The front desk told me that I should have been told on check in that this is the process and it’s DUE TO COVID!!! Seriously?||So, I was given two new sets of towels to take back to my room. ||I then proceeded to go for ice and found this sign…||IMG_1026||So we went upstairs to find a working ice machine. ||So, after that I put on swim trunks and headed to the pool/spa. ||I found a sign that said "Closed". ||So, I chose this hotel due to the presence of a spa. I PRESUMED that there would be daily replenishment of our linens and that there would be a working ice machine. I was wrong on all accounts. ||I asked to speak directly with the manager tomorrow.I was waiting for him to come in and had a difficult conversation with him. He just laughed and refused to adjust my bill. ||PS: We also found the breakfast was out of coffee. When the lady came with new pots she just sat down and waited for people to finish or something. The floor was a mess. I just dismissed that as an off day until I discovered the rest of the issues. ||It seems like there is a complete management breakdown. ||Seriously?||PSS: I am a ChoiceHotels member but I probably won’t be acquiring a lot of points if there are others options to select where I travel. ||PSSS: There is more! I used the stool in room 118 and it plugged. I got a plunger from the front desk and attempted to clear it. After many attempts I returned to the front desk to ask for a plumber. She had to call the manager, Sean, who said he would call someone. He called her back and told her that he couldn’t get anyone to come until morning. I asked to be moved to another room and I was told that the hotel was totally booked. Luckily the assistant manager called and suggested that they check on a room to see if it was actually being used. It was not so, at 9:30 we packed our belongings and moved ourselves to a different room. ||What a disaster. The only thing else that could go wrong would be for my car to be broken into. ||I was charged full fare for this disaster of a...
Read moreI'll start with my one complaint: The "Marketplace" as they call it. The hotel has no vending machines or anyway to get a food or drink item. Instead, by the front desk is a small room with a drink refrigerator, small freezer, and shelves holding dry foods and snacks along with toiletries and medicine. Now I expected there to be some amount of markup on these items, other wise why bother, just keep the vending machines.
I purchased a standard 23 Fl oz can of Peace Tea and a standard sized ice cream sandwich. At 99% of gas stations the Peace Tea would be 99¢. I was charged $4 for the tea and $3 for the ice cream sandwich. A $7 purchase. I could go across the parking lot to the Steak n Shake and get a full meal for 2 for just $3 more! They are blatantly ripping you off. If it weren't for my shoes being wet I would've told the lady "Yeah, never mind. I'll walk the 500ft to the gas station and get the same thing for $3-4."
The good things: My room is always nice and clean when I return and, unlike other places I've stayed they have an actual couch if you'd like to sit and not lay on the bed. The TV was in an awkward spot, though, where I'd have to turn it to see it comfortably from the couch or the bed.
The breakfast is very nice. There is always bagels and bread with a toaster to use. Pastries like danishes. Fruit, coffee, juice, yogurt, and milk(though they only had skim while I was here). And there is a hot meal that changes every day. I've seen biscuits, gravy, fried and scrambled eggs, mini omlets, bacon, and ham. There is also a waffle iron and batter that makes 4 mini waffles(about 4" wide) at a time. It also has chocolate chips, oats, and raisins to add to the waffles when you cook.
I have not seen the pool/hot tub but would expect the average indoor pool.
Great experiences so far but like I said, avoid the "marketplace" unless...
Read moreThe staff when we came in was so welcoming. It was 1:00 in the morning and we was exhausted.. They even discounted our night cause we was in late for $25. But it just went downhill from there. 1. The rooms have no signal for phones. I work from home and my phone is a MUST 24/7. I have very important calls around the clock and i missed several because there was no signal. 2. There was no alarm clock or mattress pad on the bed. The windows had alot of black stuff along the rims.. there was a musky smell to the room 3. There was no blankets or anything for the couch bed. When we went to pull it out there was so much stuff/trash/ dirt on the couch. 5. The floor of the room when you walked across it, it was making the sticky floor sound and our socks got so black. 6. The old lady in the dinning room working the kitchen half was doing nothing except sitting in the hallway both mornings chatting with the rude lady at the front desk. Nothing was being stocked for breakfast.. you could hear the other families whispering about her.. The furniture was very run down.. 7. The lady behind the front desk both days looked so miserable, she constantly kept her head down.. 8. Oh, were the rooms are sectioned the bed side would be freezing but the couch side was super hot.. you couldn't get the room temp to be consistant on both sides.. 9.. The pool i didn't personally go to, i took a nap but my husband said that he had to come out a couple times for a breath and to wipe his eyes because the chorine smell was very over whelming.. you can smell it when you walked in the front. our room was the room at the front desk.. 128 i think that the number.. Would we stay there again, eh probably not..We have stayed with other comforts and had no issues what so ever.. it was...
