The Allure of Maui Coffee - Life in Nanning

This was a fairly generous three stars that I'm giving. Admittedly I'm only reviewing it based on two items, the salmon eggs Benedict and the bagel sandwich. I'll start with the good, the bagels here are absolutely among the best you will ever find in Hawaii. Unfortunately that's not saying very much. the bagel sandwiches would count as at least passable anywhere in the world outside of New York metro area, but in Hawaii they count as among the best that you will eat . So that's the good thing . I don't drink coffee, but I hear the coffee is pretty good here too. However I do eat salmon Benedict, which is where we run into the problem. It's almost as if the cook lost a bet one day about the right amount of Hollandaise sauce to put on. I like quite a bit of sauce, but they put it on so thick that it's literally just a soup with the English muffin sunk at the bottom. Maybe somebody had a seizure in the back and put an entire week's worth of Hollandaise sauce on my particular plate, but they still thought it was a good idea to bring me out that bucket of sauce. The eggs aren't usually cooked particularly well and I don't know what salmon they use but it's not great. I would steer well clear of that plate and get a bagel and veggie sandwich of some kind. Take a look at the pictures

Pulled into this shop to grab a coffee. “Voted Number 1” caught m my attention and I just had to try this place out. I was thrilled to see they offfered pour over coffee. Well what premium coffee place doesn’t?? I chose the 100% Kona Coffee from Makapueo Farm. They used a Chemex for the extraction process. I asked about the coffee to bean ratio and the girl told me it was 28 g to 510 g of water. I was worried because I usually do a 1 to 15 ratio. (They are using a 1 to 18 ratio approx) The water temp they used was 197 F. I watched the whole process and they did pre rinse the filter and bloomed the coffee as well. I found the bloom was over 1 min which I feel is a little long but they are busy making other orders as well and for time management they do their best. The coffee was very good. It was not bitter or sour at all. The coffee was very clean and smooth. The taste profiles were all there. I enjoyed the coffee so much I bought 3 bags. The staff were so helpful. One of the girls got me all the info I asked for even the grind setting of their grinder so I can match it all when I got home. I had a pour over at Aloha Coffeee at the Wailea Shops and this place blew it out of the water. If you are a true coffee lover I would recommended this place 100%.

So I just want to start out and say, I am a strong critic of coffee shops, I travel around seeking out the best cup of joe where ever I go. My opinions are harsh so bare with me. When I go to get coffee, it’s not about the bean water for me. Simply the experience of walking into different shops to engage with the staff and enjoying the process of it all makes the cup of coffee. Today I walked in with high expectations, the shop is very cute, has an amazing vibe in the room. I was eager waiting for my turn to order. I couldn’t really decide what I wanted. Would I go with my normal, almond milk latte but with only four ounces of milk? Dare I say I didn’t. It was my turn to order. At this point I’m very excited. BIG disappointment! I don’t want to bore you with engagement of me ordering but may I say it was one of the worst. He was rude, impatient, and simply messed my order up, he spoke with such a low voice I could hardly understand what he was saying, till it got the the point where I just said no to every question he asked. He made my coffee and pushed me aside. Now possibly I wasn’t speaking loud enough, or being clear on what I wanted. But as a barista myself, it’s easy to pick up that a customer is confused on a drink and simply guide them to what they want. Now you may say “you’re a barista, shouldn’t you know how to order a coffee.” My answer to that is yes at my own shop! We have the basics and speciality drinks that are unique and new to you like this shops drinks were to me. So I believe in second chances and I wish this shop the best for everyone else because I’m sure it’s there and I went on a tough day for the worker. You never know what the person is going through and I hope he gets better.

I would go back and check for grammar errors but I spent to long on this...

Not for the coffee enthusiast. With praise as the best coffee on Maui I probably had high hopes. I didn't realize how snobby about coffee I must seem, but this felt like an overpriced tourist trap. Mostly espresso based (AKA Italian or Turkish) coffee if you're into that kind of thing but not particularly authentic for certain types like a cappuccino. Drip is limited to a flavoured and a dark roast only, the dark was better than a Starbucks drip but nothing overly special. Not bad overall, not great.

Not sure what the allure of 'flavoured' coffee is, removes the tasty COFFEE flavour, seems like something for people who don't really like coffee. They have a bunch of options here for some strange reason. Perhaps trying to appeal to the broadest number of tourists.

What's most disappointing about going to a coffee 'roaster' is not being able to try various different roasts. Am happy to pay for a few small pour overs or press to see what various roasts taste like before buying. What's the point of roasting in small batches, if you're selling it by the pound but you can't try anything before you buy? No labels for a roast date is disappointing for any coffee lover. You could buy equipment for pour-over or french press, but they had no such options to try coffee? If you're serious about coffee, why not let your coffee speak for itself and give people more options to try your various roasts? I bought a fairly expensive light roast, that I hope ends up being better than my expectations. At least they offer some beans with what looks to be a real medium roast and not...

I went in for coffee recently and decided to order some breakfast as well. I got an eggs benedict and a coffee. I will say that the benedict was the worst I’ve ever had. One egg completely over cooked and one still very undercooked. I’m not one to make a big deal about food but when it comes to something as simple as an egg I had to speak up. The manager was very polite and asked whether or not I would like a refund or another benedict. I chose to get another because I assumed it was an honest mistake and wouldn’t happen again. While I waited for the second plate the manager came out and asked if we would like a pastry while we wait, free of charge. I declined but appreciated the gesture. Now, to my surprise, the second benedict came out... almost worst than the first. At that point I just ate the over cooked one with a super soggy English muffin and left the other one. Don’t get me wrong, the place has amazing coffee and other little pastries of sorts. All the girls in there are very sweet. Can’t say I’ll be going back any time soon more because of the audacity to serve me the same thing I returned in the first place. I understand these are difficult times but come on now... the egg wasn’t even poached ! I recommend you find someone else who knows what they’re doing in the kitchen, let alone how to simply cook an egg properly. Hope to have a better experience next...
