This is the only Thai place open on Sunday in Kahului. I was craving Pad Thai so they got my business.
It was 2:15 in the afternoon when I went in. There were four tables with people eating. There were three other tables with dirty dishes. Quiet, in other words.
After placing my to-go order, I witnessed several mishaps with other customers and a flat- out argument between the young man that was hosting and what appeared to be a female owner. I saw her take the phone away from the young man in the middle of a conversation with a customer and I saw her berate him for his lack of skills on the ordering/payment tablet. Awkward and unprofessional.
I saw them deliver a plate of food to a customer that appeared to be a part of their meal; but half their meal (which was on their table already) was mostly eaten. Poor timing.
I overheard a phone conversation of a complaint that a to-go order was missing half of its food (they shoulda checked when they picked it up) and two of the tables had miscalculated checks.
I saw them miscommunicate to a newly arriving group.
Another customer came to the counter to ask for leftover boxes. The distracted female brought them part way to the table and then discarded her task to manage another issue. Seeing the leftover boxes sitting there for more than 5 minutes, I actually got up and delivered them to the table myself. SMH
I witnessed many annoyed looks and behaviors from many of the customers. You could tell we all felt uncomfortable and that we received poor service.
I asked another diner if they had eaten there before because I wanted to know if that was the norm. They said they’d never been there and they’d never be back. I asked, “Was the food good at least?” “Not at all” was their reply. (I don’t know what they’ll ate) Oh great.
I wanted to write my review right then and there. But I wanted to taste my food first. And that’s where they get stars from me. I ordered a basic Thai staple - chicken Pad Thai and ordered peanut sauce on the side. Although I had to argue with the female that I ordered (and paid) for peanut sauce and then again that I had already paid for my order, my food was actually quite good. It was a zero star on the heat scale even though I ordered a ‘two’. (Their scale is 1-3) But still good.
As other reviewers have mentioned, call in your order. Double check it before you leave. Then high-tail it out of there.
Thai Mee Up is SOOO much better. Unfortunately for me they aren’t open on...
Read moreThis place has one of the best Thai food I've ever eaten. Not just in Hawaii. We went back three times in the 4 day stay we had on Maui. The first time we just stumbled upon it since we needed a dinner place at 9:30 pm. The wait staff was a guy who was extremely courteous and let us dine in even though it was almost their close time. The food was absolutely delicious! I got the spicy noodle, my friends got the drunken noodle and pineapple fried rice. Every single item was 5 stars. The guy who was serving was amazing. Very polite, very patient and very helpful. The second time we went there, we got exactly the same 5 star service with the same waiter and the chef. However, we went back again a third time on Saturday this time. I think the guy was on his day off. We were instead greeted by a lady and a new guy who's only been there for 3 days. The food was pretty consistent however, the service was NOT! The lady waitress was rude and impolite. When asked to use the bathroom, she said no first but when I said I had used it the last time, she said I could go and let me in. The worst was when I got my leftovers in a box and asked for a bag to take it on the plane with me. She wasn't too happy about the request but gave me a paper bag anyway. I tore the handle of the paper bag by mistake so had to ask for another. She looked completely exasperated this time and gave me another very reluctantly. I thought this behavior was unwarranted for especially after I dined and tipped there the same night. I feel like this put a damper on my experience although I have nothing against the chef or the other servers. But I hope the management sees this review and ensures that the lady never treats anyone this way again. Other than this experience,...
Read moreCorny name aside, Tiki Tiki Thai Cuisine turned out to be pretty legit! We're regulars at Thailand Cuisine in Maui Mall so it was hard to stray from our favorite.
ATMOSPHERE: Located in Dairy Center, there's nothing fancy going on. Parking can be an issue as the mall is heavily occupied.
MENU: Thai apps, entrees and desserts.
FOOD: Khao Yum Nam - $15.00 Though not stated on the menu description, this dry, curried rice dish was a bit spicy. Pass.
Summer Roll - $11.00 I didn't try any as I don't care for summer rolls in general, but the spouse reported it as "good".
Yellow Curry (with chicken) - $14.00 I almost mistook this for soup as there was an overabundance of liquid. Creamy, coconutty, delish.
Pad Woon Sen (with chicken) - $14.00 Noodles are my weakness and this was a great choice. With subtle savory curry flavors, it had a good protein to veggie to glass noodle ratio.
Tom Yum Soup (with chicken) - $16.00 My spouse and I are on the fence with this version. Compared to the recipe we're used to at Thailand Cuisine, this one tasted like it had little to no cream in it, still very aromatic due to the spices but was a tad overly salty.
Thai Style Spicy Basil (with chicken) - $23.00 Hands down our favorite dish of them all. The ground chicken could've passed for ground pork! This dish reminded me of a goulash minus the macaroni and tomato sauce. Highly recommended.
Crispy Spring Roll - $12.00 The only disappointment of the bunch as it came with just seven tiny cut up pieces of spring roll for the price. Good texture and flavor but not worth the price.
SERVICE: My spouse did takeout (I wasn't there) and said the service was very good.
OVERALL: Different flavors than we're used to. Our second favorite Thai restaurant...
