ATMOSPHERE: Tiny little open-air spot at the busy intersection of Baldwin & Makawao. The interior fits the genre perfect with the Spanish decor, stucco walls and arched doorways. Its a bit cramped with table, booth & bar seating.
FOOD: Makawowie Nachos The chips were a mix of homemade and bought. Someone in our group opted for chicken to my dismay, but it was actually really, really good. And the toppings... Talk about a super generous overload! Globs of guacamole & sour cream, tons of cheese, olives & tomatoes. There was actually not enough chips - the total opposite of what you'd normally experience.
Chimichanga It's huge! I got the beef version which was shredded. Even though I'm a fan of ground beef it was still delish. Axed the rice. Came with beans and topped with shredded lettuce, sour cream & guacamole.
Fresh Mushrooms An entire sizzling platter full of whole fungus done in butter and wine. Good taste, price and portion size.
Burrito Supreme I am not ashamed to admit that I LOVE ground beef in my burritos, but that's a difficult wish to be granted. I just prefer the texture of ground vs. shredded. This version is available with shredded beef, chicken, or a veggie taco mix, in which case I went with the beef. It's a humongous portion filled with cheese, your choice of refried or black beans, rice which I omitted, and crowned with dollops of sour cream and fresh guacamole, and garnished with lettuce shreds and a pool of salsa all around. The flavor was mild, but just drizzle on some Cholula hot sauce and we're good to go! I could only finish half, so the other half was saved for lunch.
Seafood Enchilada Dinner The two flour enchiladas were covered in a sheet of melted Monterey Jack that were stuffed with generous chunks of firm ono fish and small, crunchy shrimp. Other compliments were fresh guac, beans of your choice (I got refried) and Mexican rice that pleasantly surprised me as I'm usually not a fan. It was a good portion size that even I couldn't finish.
SERVICE: No reservations are taken. Whether you enter from the front or side door, someone will assist you; just be patient and stand there. Our server was on top of everything and checked...
Read moreNO GUACAMOLE:/ I have lived on Maui since 1994 and Polli's was the closet Maui had to a sit down Mexican Restaurant. I've noticed a slight decline over the years, but on Saturday night June 2, for my wife's Birthday a group of us went to Polli's and each of us ordered menu items that had Guacamole listed on the menu as part of the entrée. No warning that any of the entrees will be served with NO Guacamole. One man in our party asked where is the Guacamole with the Fajitas? The reply: "We didn't get any avocados today. My friend stated well Costco sells them and the reply was: "Avocados must be ripe." I stated, well Safeway makes Guacamole fresh everyday and has plenty of ripe avocados for sale. Reply: "We only buy locally grown avocados." My friend's wife stated: "Today, there was a Farmer's Market in Kahului and elsewhere that sells locally grown avocados. The final reply, we only buy from our farmers and then the server walked away. No offer of more salsa, as a substitute or to comp the $2.95 chips. A male server came by later to ask how things were and we all said almost in unison, we would like guacamole. He just walked away. What's worse, average guacamole or NO GUACAMOLE? It's rhetorical. Tim, the owner wrote back to my wife's review and wanted to communicate with her about the poor "service". My wife gave her email, but no message was sent. Tim, the owner puts the servers at a disadvantage by Not posting on the Menu NO GUACAMOLE today! I don't have any reason to return, after twenty-four (24) years of going to Polli's, I don't go to have an argument and I don't go to any Mexican restaurant that doesn't have the decency to warn me before I order that there is NO GUACAMOLE, when the menu is clear there is. Fiesta Taco, Tostado, Fajitas. NO GUACAMOLE, NO...
Read moreSad to say this is not the pollis of old. This used to be a quaint place that did should I call it Hawaiian Mexican food. They used to be good at what they were doing and the portions used to be decent. On our last trip here to pollis we we're not really greeted at the door. We aited for a while then the guy behind the bar said we will be right with you. Right after that several people just walked in and seated themselves. We asked the person who seemed to be seating people how come they were seated before us. Now there were five adults in our party and one person was disabled and elderly. So it's not like we just blended in to the scenery. So then the guy seats us immediately and says oh I didn't know you were waiting for a table. So I am not impressed with service so far. They then proceed to seat two other tables and takre there drink order and there orders before making it back over to our table. At this point we are just trying to go with the flow. We figured no sense making a big deal about it. So we finally get around to ordering. That went pretty smoothly. Then we get our food. I will say right now that the best part of the meal was the salad and chips and salsa. The rest of our order came and the food was not horrible. It was just smaller portions and bland and tasteless. For the prices they charge and being a hole in the wall supposed to be a local eatery. They don't take care of you with portion or flavor. It's sad because they managed to mess up a simple New York steak. And I had the seafood enchiladas. Not impressed at all and I have eaten at pollis many many times over the years and this is the worst service and food I have ever had. Sadly I don't think I will be going back again. It has been a series of dissapointment the last few times I...
