This is my second time dining at Spicy Tuna; it will be my last. I want to preface with a comment about my waitress. She was not a bad server. Most of the staff is friendly when they aren't focused on personal conversations with one another. We're all working adults and this didn't bother me.
Spicy Tuna cost me $70 for two sushi rolls (for both my wife and I each) and a sampler platter of the appetizers. We ordered waters, so drinks were not involved. We dined on a Saturday evening and the building was mostly empty. I have spent $70 on sushi at other places in Toledo and received more food, higher quality, with better presentation.
The sampler platter was horrible. It was microwave quality and so salty I could barely taste anything. The "heart attack" (ironic name because of the sodium content) was the best item provided. The crab rangoon lacked filling. The spring roll was medium quality, not the worst I've had if we classify it against local Chinese buffets. The gyoza was decent, but the gyoza sauce was so salty it ruined my one dumpling, since you only get two in the sampler and I was splitting it with my wife. This leaves "bang bang" shrimp; literal microwave food that tasted of bottled chili dipping sauce you can purchase in the Walmart international aisle. All of this salt-mess was served on a well-used, clear plastic tray that people serve veggies on at family gatherings. Oh, and they sprinkled some cabbage all over the tray for garnish. It looked like a mess. For $15, this was low quality and insulting to me as a customer. Other places in Toledo have much better presentation, taste, portion and soul.
My sushi rolls were Spicy California and Toro. We'll start with the good. My spicy California beat out Kroger sushi. It beat out Ocean Garden Buffet Sushi. However, that's about where we are with it. Sushi is all about the quality of the rice. Good sushi has a pleasant mouth feel that originates from the care that the chef puts into preparing and maintaining their rice. Make no mistake, being able to see the open-lid, white rice cooker that they keep their rice in is a bad omen. This rice is dry, slightly crunchy and clearly made with very little passion. Ask yourself if you want to pay $8 for rice cooker rice slapped around room temp veggies, drizzled with spicy mayo that rivals Subway at best. It was edible. I enjoyed what I ate. But it was far too expensive for the level of presentation. Good thing most of the staff horses around the sushi prep station. Their joking around with one another is about all of the cheer that is involved with the process of preparing and serving this roll.
Let's move on to the Toro. Ohhhh, the Toro. I've had enough Ocean's Halo, dry, processed nori sheets to know when one is wrapped around my $10 roll. Five whole pieces of sushi. Five dry, horrible, disrespectfully priced pieces of sushi. The description is "tuna and scallion." There was literally no scallion on my roll. No crunch. No zest of aromatics. They flat out skipped the scallion. The tuna they served was not fatty tuna, but mushy raw tuna (which I am usually a fan of). It was not bad quality fish, but it lacked the scallion dance partner that was supposed to help awaken the flavor. There is no reason anyone should pay $10 for low quality nori, rice cooker rice and a bit of tuna. By all means, this was just a plump tuna roll that required a bath in soy sauce to choke down. Great, more salt for my already tremendously high-sodium culinary robbery experience. Plus, I got some soy sauce on my shirt. Not the restaurant's fault, but I'm mildly annoyed by it.
I ran out of room to comment on decor and having to listen to Ed Sheeran at dinner. But, their sushi menu says "runner up for best sushi in Toledo 2022." I can see why they are proud of second place; because I would choose this place second to anywhere else in Toledo.
Good luck in 2023. I'll...
Read moreDoor dash driver here, I accepted an order that was already 10 minutes late, I waited another 15 minutes and the food was still not ready. I asked a few times when the order will be ready and I was just told when it is ready it will be out. Never received a time frame.
From now on I will decline this location. Terrible customer service.
EDIT: In response to the owners response:
WOW - I have never seen so much disrespect from a Restaurant owner.
Let me make a few things clear -
FIRST - when I accept an order, I can NOT just go and get another one done while waiting on the current one. There is a PICK UP time that has to be meet and that is in the Merchant Responsibility that is in the TOS
3.B.v: Prepare the Merchant Products for each Marketplace Order for pickup by a Dasher at the designated time.
This was already not meet when I took the order. I ACCEPTED the order AFTER is was already 10 minutes late and I confirmed this when I spoke to Door Dash Customer service. The order needs to be completed by the pickup time. Texting me when it is done does not override the TOS.
Second - I cussed NO ONE out - this is a blatant lie and will be handled though the BBB. I asked when I arrived if the order was ready and then again TEN minutes later. After I was told that the order was not ready and it will be be out when it was done I simply left and canceled the pickup
Third - I spoke to Door Dash Customer service and they confirmed that a Merchant can not "blacklist" a driver - This is the SECOND lie that is in the response.
Fourth - I was there 20 minutes BEFORE the order was due?!? - As stated, when I accepted the order it was already 10 minutes PAST the pickup time. This is the time that I am supposed to pick it up from the merchant. While this may be a technical error on Door Dash service - I can only go by my app.
I have already reported this merchant to Door Dash and I had the customer service read the review and the Owners response to confirm the complaint.
I do want to thank the Owner for the order number as it helped fill out my complaint with Door Dash.
For the last part - Remove the lies and I will remove my review.
The owner has been apologetic for every review that I have seen but this one. The rudeness that I have been meet with is completely UNCALLED FOR.
And if your response is your recollection, of course it is different from my review, there are several problems with it.
Below is a transcript if the original response if it is edited. Response from the owner 3 hours ago Dereck.. Your review is quite different from our recollection. First - When door dash orders are received and put in by my staff, we then quote a time frame for an "estimated" time of completion for that order. With "your order" order #751192360 to Jessica, It was quoted 45 minutes from the time it came into our door dash tablet. The order was completed 37 minutes after we received it, so it was 8 minutes earlier then we quoted. You preceded to ignore not only the sign on the front of the door that clearly states, "we will confirm all delivery orders on tablets when they are completed, or please call us" and came into our restaurant 20 minutes before the assigned time. After telling you not once, but two times, that the order was not ready, you then cursed at a female staff member about your displeasure with the situation. Our servers give rough estimates on when it is ready, they are not the ones making the food, nor do they have time to interrupt our sushi chefs and see where the ticket is, especially when it is busy, and especially since an order time was quoted to DD on a tablet. You did not follow orders from the company you are delivering for. You do not have to worry about declining future orders, I will call Door Dash and have you removed from our restaurant pool if that is what you would like.
Take care Dereck...
Read moreUpdate: went in for dinner again After having my baby. Thankfully I can consume all kinds of sushi now. So happy about that. But we were blown away when the general manager Ryan was there and when we were heading out he stopped us and remembered our incident and gave us a gift card! We couldn’t believe after so much time has passed that he still wanted to make things right. I’m so impressed and happy we came back and will continue spreading the word about the best sushi restaurant in town! Thank you for going above and beyond!
I really love this place. It’s my favorite sushi place. But just recently something terrible happened and I really don’t think it was handled appropriately. I’m 9 months pregnant so I cannot and have not consumed any raw meat throughout my pregnancy. We came on vegan night and were excited for the vegan specials since I am okay to eat the vegan and cooked rolls. We had a new server and she must’ve rang in the normal raw rolls instead and we had no idea. We all were sharing since we assumed it was safe for me to eat. They took off those rolls from our bill and just apologized for the incident. The manager said he has a friend who was just pregnant and ate small amounts of raw fish. He came back and showed me the amount of raw fish that was on the rolls. I’m glad his friend’s baby Was born healthy with no issues. But we are very concerned at the risks involved with this mistake. And to just take off the rolls that were messed up is definitely not enough to make up for the potential harm caused to my unborn baby. I’m just in shock more wasn’t done for how serious of a mistake this is. I hope the owner sees this and I would hope mistakes like this would be taken care of better. I’ve worked in many restaurants and an incident like this would have the restaurants pay the entire bill...
