Happy Jack's Submarines — Restaurant in McHenry

Edit: tried them again this afternoon. I asked about a lime slushee which I know I had gotten for over 30 years, and it blew my mind that Jack, the owner himself was there so surely he’d recall it right? The girl over the phone had to be wrong, right? Nope. He simply told me they don’t have one and played naive to ever having one.

They used to make it with the same stuff the green river was made from, which was also notably off the menu.

Why flat out act like your customer is insane though??? lol…

Also, meatball sandwich had the cheese melted by tossing it in the microwave INSIDE OF THE STROFOAM that isn’t marked as microwave safe. No wonder the place always has a smell. Won’t be back.

I never really got why this place has such a high rating. I honestly think it’s nothing more than the nostalgia factor. After all, this is where the teachers go, the softball and baseball teams, soccer and football, etc. No reason to give it a 5 star review though. Their meatball sandwich is OK. Their hot dogs are good. Their chili dogs and everything else though has a funky taste that smells and tastes like everything else there when you walk in. Their slushees and shakes are usually very inconsistent and totally dependent on how well or lack thereof that someone has been trained to make it. Either you get something tasteless or something so completely overwhelming with sugar that you can’t stomach more than a few sips. Their fries IMO have always been horrible. I know they feature they air dry everything like it’s some miracle about the rest but I’ll stick to the deep fryer, thanks. There literally is nothing that screams 5 star review out of this place. 4 at best, but that’s pushing it. I don’t even personally believe it deserves 3 stars when you factor...

Not sure what the worst burger I have eaten is but, the Steak Burger which is the standard burger at Happy Jack's was of poor quality. The bun was okay. The ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise were okay. That's were it ends. The burger patty was an industrial grade cafeteria processed sausage like meat object pressed out of some machine in some factory. Barely any grill marks and seasoned with some generic seasoning salt. Tomatoes and pickles were low grade as well. Fries were okay but pretty plain and the Country Time lemonade wasn't mixed right. Haven't been to Happy Jacks in a long time, So we thought we'd stop and have lunch here today. Unfortunately, we were disappointed. The staff were all very pleasant and the place was clean, but we were disappointed with the food. the burger had an odd flavor and the fries were cold, old and not fully cooked.
