Got a chance to stop by Ry & Howies this weekend and decided to grab myself two sandwiches..
Having worked in the restaurant industry for all my life, I had seen through one of my old Chef's that a well respected Chef and good buddy of his was opening up a place in my hometown. I already have a lot of respect for these group of fellows as I know what they're capable of..
I was immediately and politely greeted by the front counter girl & boy. Off the bat, in a world of smileless customer service and monotone, "how can I help you", that is not what I received walking in. It had a real family vibe, and they fielded any questions I had with confidence. Good job, kids!
The decor was quaint and simple, but honestly, it just felt right for a place you just want to get a simple yet good sandwich from.
Offering various cheesesteaks & hoagies, burgers, and several specialty sandwiches, I opted to keep it simple and try one hot and one cold sandwich.
I got a classic Italian with all the normal fixings and hot cherry peppers and a pizza steak with fried long hot peppers, mushrooms, and onions.
I went home, smoked a jay, and opened up that big bag of sandwiches that was waiting for me.
First, the bread was super soft, and you could tell freshly baked.
Your first impression just looking at it is that someone took their time making this. They actually cared.
You might think that's a silly thing, but I don't think I'm the only person out there experiencing sub-par service and half thrown together food. The work ethic and ability to get good help has been real trouble for a lot of places, but this... this is the sandwich I've been looking for. Perfectly balanced, and the homemade hot peppers packed a punch (in a good way!).
Offering small and large size sandiches, I opted for 2 smalls. The pizza steak was out of this world good. I'm from Philly, home of the cheesesteak, and typically reserve all my cheesesteak eating for when I'm in the city. I haven't found a great cheesesteak more local than traveling to Philly for one.
I will say, however, that if they continue to put out consistent food like what I just picked up yesterday, than finally I'll have a cheesesteak place 2 minutes away, rather than the 30+ to Philly.
The quality of the steak was phenomenal, and the cheese had so much flavor! I had to pull the sandwich away from my face and do a double take to all the flavors it was bursting with, and so unexpectedly, for a simple pizza steak. The mushrooms weren't those Sysco brand mushrooms. If they were, then shame on me, but the ingredients definitely tasted elevated with fried onions and homemade long hots to bring it all together.
A nice addition to our growing town, local Chefs with a ton of background and skill, who just want to simply make you a damn good sandwich. Nothing else.
Again, as long as they stay consistent, man, do I think they'll do just fine! I will, for sure, be returning! I look forward to trying every one of their...
Read moreI don't even remember driving to Ry and Howie's. One second I was craving a cheesesteak, the next I woke up inside the building, standing at the counter, whispering, "Give me your finest meat wizardry." The air was thick with the scent of sizzling beef and toasted bread. My pupils dilated. I could hear colors. Somewhere, a hawk screeched.
Then came Sophia. The cashier. The guardian of the griddle. A radiant being of pure customer service and chaotic good energy. She didn’t just take my order—she understood my soul. I said “cheesesteak,” and she nodded like, “I got you, my child.”
Within minutes, a sandwich descended upon me that defied all logic. Hot, cheesy, beefy perfection wrapped in a roll forged by the gods in a lightning oven. I took one bite and bit straight through the space-time continuum. I saw myself graduating college, holding the sandwich instead of a diploma. I saw the Moon wink at me. My phone screen cracked from the flavor vibrations.
At some point, I dropped to my knees. Not out of pain—but reverence. I whispered “thank you” to no one and everyone. Sophia saw me and gave me a nod—the kind of nod that says, “You’re one of us now.” Then she said, “You want a lid for that drink?” and I cried.
I left Ry and Howie’s a different person. A better person. A flavor-converted disciple of cheesesteak excellence. My GPS rerouted itself to “Home of Bliss.” My car started purring.
If you haven’t been to Ry and Howie’s, ask yourself: Do I even deserve happiness? If yes, go. Order the cheesesteak. Thank Sophia. Let go of your earthly burdens. And ascend.
5 stars. But if I could give them a constellation, I’d name it “Beefus Maximus” in...
Read moreAMAZING. First time trying them. My dad went and was raving about it and my son asked if we could try it. I ordered take out. Chicken cheesesteak, regular cheesesteak, burger and a turkey hoagie. Everything was AWESOME! They did not disappoint. First of all the servings are huge. I had the hoagie and seriously am full on 1/4 of it. Will have more later and lunch tomorrow. They know how to handle the details - like packaging the hoagie separately from the hot items. They are so smart in putting the toppings in the meat so they don't fall off. My husband said he found a better place than Primo's for hoagies looking at mine. (no, I'm not sharing). Burger was very yummy. Chicken cheesesteak - my husband said it was like a philly cheesesteak. My son commented about how they mix the cheese in with the meat instead of on top. Everyone was very happy. And takeout is sometimes hard to get right by area places, so it was appreciated. I wanted to leave this review, because I can imagine how challenging it is to open a new place. And when they get it right, the community should know. Check them out. Wish I took photos, but try it and experience...
