We grew up in Ohio but lived in Phoenix for 10 years. Phoenix is only two hours from Mexico and there are Mexican restaurants galore throughout the Phoenix Metro area. Most claim to be "authentic" Mexican food.
Now, neither my wife and I have ever traveled to Mexico so, we have never had the pleasure of sitting in a Mexican's familia casa and have a home cooked meal but we have had some pretty good "Mexican food" in Arizona.
Don Tequila's makes the same claim to serve "authentic" Mexican food but we beg to differ.
When walked into the restaurant we were greeted by the hostess who seated us. Then the waitress came over and here's where one of the only things that makes this an "authentic" Mexican restaurant came into play. In broken english...speaking half spanish half english she said something about us...my wife and I...being her amigo's. "Amigo's you like drink?" I was like, "What?" She said, "Mr. Amigo, Drink?" I finally figured out that she was asking what I wanted to drink.
We placed our drink orders with our new "amigo", she brought us our drinks then took our orders, brought us our food and then we never saw her again. She disappeared and the only time we saw her again was when she brought us our check.
Now for the good part. I ordered two taco's with re-fried beans. All I can say about the food I received and partially ate is if this is authentic Mexican food no wonder there are so many illegals crossing the border to get into America because this food was absolutely terrible. The taco shells were store bought from Giant Eagle. The meat inside the taco shell resembled, texture wise, liquid...mushy diarrhea with sliced up pieces of lettuce. These taco's had NOTHING even close to resembling flavor. Beyond bland and flavorless. The re-fried beans were re-fried beans. There's not much one can say about re-fried beans.
Our waitress never came back to ask us how things were or if we needed more drinks. When she took our credit card for payment a gentleman brought us the wrong card back form the register and because he didn't speak English he didn't understand that he gave us someone else's credit card. He kept squinting at the card as if he couldn't see it. The waitress came over and kept saying something in Spanish to him and he just got more confused, squinting at our card and just gave the waitress the card and walked away. She finally got us the correct card, we paid and left.
NOW for what makes this restaurant a truly authentic Mexican restaurant. Today, the day after eating there we both have diarrhea and have had it all day. Our entire experience was terrible and as a reminder of our "wonderful" experience, ever 15 minutes throughout the day we have to run to the bathroom and feel the wrath of Don Tequila as it spews out of our a**es.
They need to take the name of this restaurant, Don Tequila, and change it to...
Read moreThis used to be our go to place for many years because of great quality, delicious tasting food and the fantastic service….and last night we thought we’d venture in after not having been there for several weeks…..however it was a mistake. Over the past couple of years, we’ve tried it at various times once or twice but usually with the same disappointing results. They’ve done some remodeling here and installed a bar in the front section, which is all right. I suppose the front section is still my favorite section. I think, however, post C@V!d the quality of food has really gone down down down… my ground beef burrito didn’t have any flavor to it whatsoever…..quality of ingredients has been pushed back and I’m not sure who’s preparing the food in the kitchen, but it’s very average if not below average tasting…..with a plethora of Mexican restaurants opening up shop all over Medina……I know it’s tough to keep patrons coming on a consistent basis, but we’re done with DT’s for awhile…..Don Tequila went off the rails in how they are managing their restaurant with mediocre service and poor quality meals. Again, the meat filling in both my dish and my wife’s dish, which were both ground beef had hardly any spicy to it whatsoever. Just bad. It was very plain and ordinary. Furthermore, they cut the beef portions in my burrito with lots of rice. Probably an attempt to save money. it was really just awful. We choked it down because we were starving, but it’ll probably be a long time, if ever, we go back to Don Tequila’s. I know that the manager/owner had some health issues a few years ago, and maybe just the management of the place went off the rails…..but the whole thing needs reworked…… last thing I’ll say is last night they were using a powerful scented cleaner that wafted through the entire restaurant….the one section of the restaurant was behind cleaned while the other section was serving food. Honestly, the vapors and the fumes were enough to knock you...
Read moreMy whole family has literally gone to don tequilas for YEARS and I'm completely disgusted with how rude the host and service has been the past 2 times I've gone. This time I asked for cheese dip and they gave it to me nearly half full and when I asked if he could fill it more he told me to just eat it and then when he was taking our order I asked if I could substitute something and he got an attitude and said that they were really busy and the cooks don't have time for that tonight. Also asked me if I could read?! I expressed my frustration because they ALWAYS let me substitute foods and he got very rude with me and said he would get us a new server. I immediately walked out. Expressed to the owner and he seemed like he could care less. The previous time I called and made a order for to go and they told me they were busy and said it would take 30-45 minutes. NO BIG DEAL! When I arrived I told the host I was picking up and she acted like I was the biggest inconvenience. After waiting an hour I went up and double checked with her because they were so busy I wanted to make sure they didnt forget. She rudely tells me they are busy and shes already checked it's not up there. So after waiting an hour and a half I speak up and tell them they said 45 minutes on the phone and if I knew it was gonna be that long I would have went somewhere else. Somehow my food magically appears and I'm pretty sure it was there for awhile she just didnt check. I get home and come to find out they didnt give me tortillas for the fajitas??????! I call them to let them know and all he offers is for me to get extra next time or to come back up and get them. The service and management is HORRIBLE. I'm sad to not go there anymore because they have good food but I will not help support a buisness that is ran with rude people and to be treated like that. So Don Tequilas you lost a very loyal customer and excellent tipper and I will no longer refer...
