A couple of weeks ago, I had my car in the shop near Shaanxi. I saw it, and looked -up the Google reviews. Ian Bennett said, "Loved the dried green beans and the spicy cumin lamb noodles."' My taste buds immediately perked-up, and I went in to try them out.
The decor is excellent, and helps immerse you into the experience. Tables are spacious, and the chairs are comfortable. The wall at the end of the bar highlights several of their positive reviews. There are two large screen TVs over the bar playing culturally related fare. If you dine alone, at least you can take-in the visuals, LOL.
The menu is simply HUGE. You must keep in mind that you may need to take several mins just to explore all of the options. There is a solid description of most every dish. My server was excellent, and he was able to explain most every dish, as well.
I had both of what Ian mentioned, which were excellent. I added the spicey-tripe, which was served as a cold dish. Unfortunately, I didn't take pics of any of those. However, the biang-biang noodles are an experience, for sure. Two or three feet long, about an inch-wide, thick and chewy goodness. The lamb was finely chopped, and the dish also had small cubed potatoes and some other veggies. The green beans were presented covered with what appeared to be coarse ground pepper, and bits of dried red chilis. However, it was quite mild and not at all peppery. Just right.
Knowing what I know now, I would have ordered that tripe toned-down, LOL. It didn't 'hurt' me, but it was about at the top of my tolerance level. Indeed, the vast majority of the hundreds of choices display the little red chili pepper symbol. I confirmed with the server that most of them...but not all...can be served in more mild fashion. You need to ask if you have any concerns.
My second visit included what I pictured here. Rice porridge with century egg and mushroom, and the shredded pork 'hamburger' are hot dishes. Chilled garlic cucumber salad, and spicey garlic pork were cold dishes. The porridge was huge, mild, and delicious. The pattie was mild and tasty, with a wonderul flaky outer pocket. I poured a bit of porridge over it to add a bit more moisture as I ate it. (I have to add sauce to pulled pork at a BBQ, also, LOL). The sliced pork I make sure to order 'easy', and yet...there was just a hint there to maintain flavor. The cuke salad is a fave of mine when I see it, and this was no exception. Crisp, fresh, and savory
The sandwhich is filling enough to be a meal, and could easily be cut in half. The soup could serve a small bowl probably up to eight quite easily. Indeed, everything I have so far ordered here can easily be split to be shared and enjoyed. You NEED to check this place out, and I suspect you will become an instant...
Read moreWe’ve been coming to this restaurant for years at least five food was always stellar. The last five months something has very much changed! I don’t know if it’s a new owners different cooks, what it is, but we’ve had a bad experience several times now. And will no longer be going back.
The last three times we’ve gotten hot and sour soup it’s tasted and smelled like cow patty. And again that used to be a regular item we got so we know something has changed.
I’ve gone several times before and have gotten light sauce or sauce on the side trying to be on a diet. This time I was told it was impossible, which was weird so then I made my order and I got the wrong dish with the wrong protein and it was just dripping with water no sauce at all. My friend ordered Thai chicken and got sweet-and-sour chicken that was breaded when the picture online shows Thai chicken with the description and doesn’t show it being breaded. The waitress then argued with my friend for several minutes, trying to explain that that was Thai chicken. However, there was no basil in it. It was breaded and there was no special chilies. We ordered soup two appetizers and four entrées. Again have been coming here for years. Typically the soup comes out first then we get our appetizers and then shortly later here come the entrées. This time was extremely messed up. Got one entrée with nothing else on the table then a second entrée came out then the next two entrées came out at that point, two of them were wrong. We then waited for our server to come back and asked her for our soup and appetizers and she said they take a while to make. Again, not our first time coming to this restaurant so we know that’s not true. We also got four entrées, which means we should’ve gotten four servings of rice or at least a bowl of rice with our food nothing. The soup finally comes, and then one of the appetizers come which later we found out no one ordered eggrolls. We ordered the crab puffs and potstickers neither sound like eggrolls.
Overall, the whole experience has been very disappointing and now we will be looking for a new restaurant. Food quality service have all gone downhill. I highly recommend going...
Read moreWe were there at lunch time and there were homeless people outside the front door rearranging their stuff and rolling up their sleeping bags. We had to go around them but what do you do about that? Not sure. Anyway, we had to climb into our booth because the fancy table legs prevent you from sliding in and out, but we did have prompt attention from our server(although we'd barely had time to peruse the menu). A mainly Chinese language menu with some pictures and English with a variety of offerings from normal Chinese fare to unique dishes ranging in price from moderately high to extremely high. We ordered the Sesame Chicken and the General Tso's Chicken to familiarize ourselves to the food. We usually do this at new restaurants and then as we get to know the staff and the food, we learn more about the restaurant's culture and we try new things. This place unfortunately won't make the returning list. The chicken was fried so much that it was entirely hard and crunchy and besides that, it tasted like it was day old, like perhaps they had tried to ressurect yesterday's chicken by refrying it. Ugh:( Not good. The Tso's sauce was fine, but not spicy in the least and the Sesame sauce was like snot, there's no other way to explain it, except maybe like the raw white of an egg, like the chef had added too much corn starch. The broccoli florets around the plate were ice cold, but perhaps they were that way on purpose, but not trimming the brown edges was another giveaway to 'old food'. When we brought the food to the attention of our server, she went to talk to management and came back to say that since we had eaten some of it (very few bites indeed!) That all she could do was to give us 10÷ off of the total price (which she had already agreed to do had we paid in cash)!! Are you kidding me? No thanks. Perhaps we ordered the wrong thing in a unique menu kitchen, but don't sell it then and certainly don't treat your customers that way! We won't be returning and will share...
