Terribly disappointed! :( we were avid Crazy Johnnie’s patrons when located in fat city. Moved a state away but still followed on fb. When heard she was selling and our most memorable restaurant would be closing down, we travelled back for one last hoorah. Met Johnnie at the bar and thanked her for the memories and delicious food. Fast forward to the restaurant re-opening and we were excited to order our staples. Dippin’ bread and dippin’ shrimp, gumbo and prime rib with crazy potatoes. Let me just say, you will have a nostalgic feeling ordering and seeing it on the menu but when you taste it, It’s not the same. The dipping sauce, we found too sweet and thick like bbq sauce and the shrimp seemed like they were a different variety. I always enjoyed a cup of gumbo and remembered the yummy little shrimp but this gumbo had no protein or meats found. It resembled a cold Campbell soup of crème of chicken. Almost gelatin with the same consistency. The prime rib was the worst of all. The sliver of meat (prime rib 1/4 of an inch thick) you receive felt like you are on a cruise ship when they provide you a slice from a buffet and at close to $40 with salty crazy potatoes, that was definitely a no. The atmosphere was noisy and loud but lively so not too bad. Service was ok. Didn’t have a spoon for gumbo until we caught another waitress rushing by. Our poor waitress was everywhere from bartending to waiting tables so will give her grace. She was sweet. So overall if you remember the original, it’s not the same. We will try the food and spirits location the next time we are back but I’m proud to continue buying the seasonings and creating our own copycat recipes...
Read moreWalking in the door after a decade of missing Crazy Johnnie's, didn't feel like I was walking into Crazy Johnnie's, at all. Seated immediately, waitress was super friendly & attentive. No complaints with her. Place is clean. My son wanted a burger from the kids menu, the only other choice was chicken fingers, THERE WERE NO BURGERS!!!!! & This is Friday 4pm. BBQ Shrimp was not as big nor do I think it's the same type of shrimp. Strongly Believe Johnnie used Lake Pontchartrain Pink Shrimp & now they're using Gulf Shrimp. They look, feel & taste much different. The Elephant in the Room, the dipping sauce/BBQ Shrimp Sauce- IT IS NOT THE SAME, idk if it's missing garlic, worchershire, rosemary, black pepper, brown sugar, dill, idk, IT'S NOT THE SAME, that's what I do know. Mushrooms were extremely bland, salt & pepper couldn't even fix it. Wound up throwing it away. Used to be obsessed with Shrimp Sochi, which was Lake Shrimp with a butter dill sauce over a rice pilaf & slivered almonds on top. We ordered TWO. They bring it out with the Shrimp sitting on top of Crazy Potatoes!!!!!!! EXACTLY WHO THOUGHT THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA? We sent the plates back. Never in my life have I ever sent a plate of food back. EVER!!! IT WAS EMBARRASSING & SHAMEFUL. Was on the verge of crying. I had such high hopes for this place. Waited until the crowd died down & gave the business time to work out the kinks. Only thing that was good were the darn chicken tenders my son decided to order. CHICKEN TENDERS. If things don't improve, this place will not last. Very...
Read moreI recently dined at Crazy Johnnie's with high expectations. Unfortunately, the experience was underwhelming.
From the moment we arrived, the experience got off on the wrong foot. We waited at the entrance for several minutes without to be acknowledged — no greeting, no host, no eye contact.
Once at the table, it was more of the same: one menu was put on our table. After a few minutes our server came to introduce himself and took a drink order. When the first appetizer (shrimp remoulade) arrived, we realized we didn’t have plates — which meant awkwardly sharing or waiting for someone to bring what should have been there from the start. The second appetizer was brought out (BBQ Shrimp) which is when we asked for plates. Our server simply stated "Let me go see if we have any" WHAT? A bowl was brought back to the table.
My filet arrived being ordered medium-rare, but I could see that it was not a good cut. It was unevenly cut, with visible connective tissue and gristle running through it. The seasoning was minimal to nonexistent, which only highlighted the blandness of the meat. The exterior lacked the proper sear you'd expect from a high-temperature grill or pan, leaving it oddly pale and devoid of the rich, caramelized crust that gives filet its signature flavor.
Our server was very polite, and I think he could see were less than thrilled with our meal.
Every restaurant can have an off day, but basic service — a greeting, a menu, proper table settings — shouldn't be negotiable.
Would I return? No, pretty positive it is a...
