We discovered this place about two years ago late on a holiday night when other places were normally closed all day. We were tired, hungry, and still a long ways from home but needing to get there so we could get a little rest before resuming our normal busy daily schedules. We had driven through several large cities expecting to find some kind of restaurant, but none were open. The sign for Jomax BBQ seemed to appear out of nowhere. I whipped down the next street and pulled into the parking lot, praying they were open. Thus began a series of pleasant dining experiences. Now each time we drive through Metter the car seems to steer itself to Jomax BBQ. We even stopped in with the grandkids one time because we knew we could get an affordable, healthy meal that they would willingly eat. Tonight's meal was particularly tasty and satisfying. I had the wings combo with fried squash as my side dish. Kathy had the vegetable soup/grilled cheese sandwich combo. Everything was great and we were adequately full, but the squash were so good I ordered another serving. The second order was better than the first and there was NOTHING bad about the first serving! JW was our waitress and she was such a joy. We will be passing back through Metter tomorrow and we already know where supper will be! We had the pleasure of meeting the owner as we were leaving and had a brief, nice conversation with him. We felt like we were visiting with an old friend. Looking forward to seeing that "old...
Read moreWe were traveling from Texas to Savannah but after a very long drive and just short of our goal, we had to stop due to bad weather. At the gas station, they recommended and directed us up the hill to Jomax's. Tired and hungry, we walked in at around 5 pm with no expectations.
Guys this place is the real deal. While it is billed as a BBQ restaurant, they have salads, burgers, sandwiches, and other entrees as well. My burger was a delight- none of the fancy highbrow accessories folks use to dress up a burger these days, just two fresh made patties and American cheese on top. My mom ordered a loaded baked potato that came with a generous helping of chopped barbecue and dad had a grilled cheese sandwich that would pass for the ones that used to come from my grandma's cast iron skillet.
The folks there were really great. A car-full of 3 cranky folks whose combined age is over 250 years walked in and when we walked out we were laughing and joking. Faith in humanity restored! Further evidence that small family run restaurants continue to be the better choice for you...
Read moreLet me count the ways of why I will not return. I was told to have a seat and someone would be with us. 10 minutes later after 3 other tables sat and were greeted I still sat there with no one coming to my table. I had to go up to the register to get service. While the food arrive quickly it was all cold to Luke warm. The only thing that was hot was the fried squash, but it was still covered in grease. The pork, yes was cold to Luke warm, like it had been heated in a microwave. Wasn’t anything spectacular for a bbq place. Speaking of bbq, there’s only 1 sauce to choose from and it’s very much a vinegar based sauce. Service- leaves much to be desired, after being ignored after seating wasn’t enough, once we got our food we were checked on once from there. Drinks went empty until we finally got up paid our bill and left.
Probably won’t be returning. I can get mediocre bbq from pretty much anywhere and better service at Shane’s. I’ll just drive...
