The experience for an airport restaurant is often similar across the board. Yes you have the exciting prospect of a flight and adventure in front of you but you also have a tight schedule to adhere to (usually). So it’s up to the food and the service to bring that overall experience stand out. Especially since airport food is so expensive. So having gone into Sushi Maki Restaurant in Mia int airport and having no expectations really makes me grateful to have had Joshua as my waiter. His energetic yet calm attentive manner brought a ray of sunshine to an unexpected business trip. He saw my indecision and boldly provided a recommendation for some of the local IPAs, a Hazy ipa by prison ipas Nelson. This turned out to be an excellent combination with the “Tuna tataki” as the citrus flavor in contrast with the saltiness of the dish blended really well, not to mention that the drink’s hops did not become overwhelming even after it lost its coolness. The second thing that stood out was the ingredients used were of better quality than what you usually find in airport restaurants. Thank you.

Had a long layover in Miami and decided to try Sushi Maki for dinner. I ordered the shrimp tempura and two rolls - the Dancing Eel and the Two Timing Tuna. The shrimp tempura was okay, the coating a little thicker then I'm used to for tempura, but the Vegis they include were rough. It had a thick onion ring, large cauliflower and broccoli florets. They were so large they released too much moisture during the frying process and the coating was soggy. The rolls were okay, nothing I would go back for though. The two timing tuna was supposed to have spicy tuna as part of the roll, but there was no spice at all. Service on the other hand was amazing, even when I told my server that they didn't need to replace the tempura as I was full and just wanted my check, she brought me a piece of key lime pie as an apology - and the pie was delicious. I know many will say, well what did you do expect at an airport.... I get it, but since I was at an airport on a coast known for good seafood, I expected more.

1 Star – Never Again This was hands down one of the worst sushi experiences I’ve ever had. The sushi maki on my platter was bland, poorly rolled, and tasted like it had been sitting out for hours—nothing fresh about it. The miso soup? Absolutely inedible. It genuinely tasted like warm dishwater with a few soggy tofu chunks floating in it. The seaweed salad was close to being lukewarm. To top it off, the service was just as disappointing. My server, Yunisleisi, seemed completely uninterested in being there—barely took my order for takeout, and was checking her compact while taking my order just plain wrong, and never once asked how things were. It felt like I were a bother just for showing up. Save your money and go anywhere else. This place was a complete letdown.

EDIT: Order was refunded after this review was published. 1 → 2

Worst airport restaurant operation we’ve been to in years. Employees seem completely confused and the food is not good.

On dietary restrictions: they had a sign out front claiming to have gluten free options. However, the man at the register said nothing on the menu was gluten free (seemed confused). We asked for someone else to talk to. The manager (?) said the pad thai was gluten free. Ordered that but I had a reaction so I think there must’ve been wheat in the processed sauce.

More on incompetence: we pointed to a ready-made box of sushi, intending to buy it with the pad thai. The sushi was charged at $23, which seemed high. Turns out they had processed an order for a bigger sashimi platter and a soup. This led to a ton of confusion on both ends. They didn’t give us the soup initially. Then we asked for the soup we paid for; they asked what soup, “pork?”. We didn’t know but we paid for one, so we said miso soup seems more appropriate. We left with the soup. Had to go back because they didn’t give a spoon. Then we went all the way our gate and realized they didn’t give any soy sauce for the very plain sashimi platter. Ran back and asked for soy sauce; the employee held up mayonnaise. “Soy sauce”, we repeated. They held up ginger. “Soy sauce”. They held up what appeared to be soy sauce (and we took), but it was teriyaki sauce.

On quality: Ultimately we threw away the sashimi platter because it looked dubious; got a rice dish from the Chinese place nearby instead. Ate half of the pad thai (got a reaction). Barely tasted like pad Thai, and was very bland...

DISGUSTING

I was here for a cruise and ended up laid over in Miami due to mechanical issues with the plane. We went here to grab dinner with a travel voucher supplied by the airline before leaving after waiting hours in the airport. The waitress was in so much of a hurry she could barely answer our questions about the menu. All of her responses were curt yes and no and yep. We placed our order and the Appetizer came out undercooked and frozen on the inside. Our waitress was too busy to come back to check on us or even ask if the food was okay. Instead a male waiter who brought our entree to the table addressed our concern apologized and returned the food to the kitchen . 10 minutes later the same appetizer came back cooked to mush and it was the exact same food. They didn’t even bother to prepare a new dish they basically just finished cooking the first dish more! I was appalled that is completely unsafe and unsanitary you don't prepare under cooked food and then finish cooking it in a restaurant and serve to guests that’s how people get food borne illnesses!!!If we didn’t have a flight to catch at the last minute I certainly would have spoken with manager or even a general manager. When our waitress eventually rang us up we had to ask to have the dish removed as there was no way we were eating it! The icing on the cake was she tried to explain that the food voucher didn’t cover tips!! Are you F——ing kidding me ??!! You don’t get a tip for being to busy to check on your table ,or the guest in your restaurant, or to make sure the food is adequate Just...
