Cerveza y historia! Beer and history, nice combo!
La Tropical is a brewery in Wynwood on 25th Street. Try to park in the street or nearby streets if you can versus the huge parking place across the street, which is very expensive (3 times the parking in the streets).
1888 is the year this brewery was founded: in Cuba. They became the top brewery there and they continue to remain as such until the 1960’s when the Cuban Revolution took over by force many businesses, this one included.
La Tropical was re-established by the great-great grandson of the original founder in 1998 in Miami and has since then grown and changed location to move to Wynwood. I suggest you read the entire story published on the menu while waiting for your beer/food; nobody has ever gotten from knowledge.
That said, let’s talk about what you want to know: beers. For me, the best is La Original, which also seems to be the favorite by local patrons: it is a very refreshing beer, and I needed that after walking in the summer heat, but unlike many “refreshing” beers, it’s not too light and it has personality. While perfect if you are thirsty, it also provides a nice not too subtle “hoppy” flavor. I quickly had two of them.
Nativo Key is a bit too much on the sweet side for me, but was still a good beer.
If you are thirsty and used to light beers, like most of American beers, then you might enjoy the Tropiflaca, really a thirst quencher and at only 3.9% alcohol very mild for those who prefer beers with low alcohol content. The difference between this one and La Original is that the latter is an amber beer more than a lager and therefore presents a pale red to brown-ish color and tones of hops clearly noticeable at the first sip.
I can’t recall the name, but my wife also tried a beer with several type of berries; I would normally refrain from such a fruity beer but I tasted it and it wasn’t bad at all and especially it wasn’t as sweet as I thought. I wouldn’t get one for myself, but just in case you like a fruity twist to your beer, give it a chance.
We didn’t try any food here, just relaxed at the bar for a while trying beers - also because we were on one of our ethnic “travel-by-food” tours, so we ate Cuban lunch at Enriqueta’s, moved to Mamma Leone’s for Italian dessert and coffee, then “return to Cuba” by coming here to this Cerveceria.
Now, for service and ambiance. Service at the bar was extremely slow, particularly our bartender seemed to disappear for long breaks and was just uninterested. I won’t hammer the place though through rating because the other bartender was serving people with good attitude and pace, so it was more of an individual not in the right mood than an establishment’s fault.
Ambiance is very nice: from outside, coming in, you walk through their outdoor patio, which is very large and beautifully landscaped; great place for South Florida winter, of course in July, when we came here, nobody was sitting outside. Inside the place is surprisingly big, very tall ceilings, with a typical brewery feel without the “warehouse feel” you might have in a Chicago or NE USA brewery.
I wouldn’t call it quaint, because we are talking about a very big and bright place, but I liked it and there’s a laid-back atmosphere that just makes you stay at the bar, enjoying some brews and talk about things.
We live 60 miles north of this place, but often go to Miami, so this Cerveceria has already made my favorite list in Google map. I’ll be back for sure.
Oh, final note: when you get here from the street you might be tricked like I was, as there is a huge garage door with the name “La Tropical” and it is closed. I thought “oh, no, we came for nothing”. Never give up: to the left you see some murals and if you keep walking toward it, then you can see the name La Tropical and...
