This is a super fun little beach cafe. I've heard it is packed in the summer and I understand why - across from the park and just down the way from beach access. We went on a rainy, chilly Sunday morning. We were greeted warmly and quickly led to a window table on the first floor. The beach vibe abounds in the art on the walls and the surrounding knick-knacks. Our waitress was fast and cheerful. You definitely feel looked after at Billies. My companion had the burrito that was easily enough for two (though he quickly polished it off as a solo work). My Captain's Special which was a corn biscuit with sausage gravy and super tasty parmesan and herbed potatoes was outstanding. Biscuits and gravy in a particularly delicious way. Our waitress brought us one of their signature blueberry muffins as a on the house special. People buy them by the 1/2 dozen. And I saw folks leaving with containers of muffins. It was good with a buttery streusel topping. It was also very sweet. Again, my husband had no problem polishing that off either. We will be back.

While on your way here, it might feel like you are heading into a setup to get yourself killed, but the food here is worth the risk. Each dish we tried is just a bit different than a traditional version of what I've had before. The biscuits with sausage gravy has a couple eggs over-easy on top of it, which somehow just works. It is one of my favorite renditions of this dish that I've ever had. The French Toast had some walnuts and bananas included with the syrup and cream cheese. This was also excellent. Neither dish was too far out on a limb from what you would expect, but the small changes definitely added some complexity and we both thought for the better. It's only a small little joint with maybe 6-7 tables, but they do have some outside patio seating as well if weather permits. Staff was friendly and quick to get orders/drinks and bring the food out when it was ready. I just wish I could have tried a couple more of the dishes.

Get off the beaten path in Michigan City, IN, and meander you way just south of Sheridan Park to the treasure that is Dune Billies Cafe. You can't miss it as you are met with a kaleidoscope of colors adorning the long front porch that beckons you in. But this is not all they have to offer. The food is absolutely delicious here. Whether it's breakfast or lunch you seek, you won't be disappointed. My friend and I shared the Biscuits and Gravy dish and the Ham and Spinach Eggs Benedict that had us experiencing food nirvana in no time. Our food was delivered quickly despite the fact that they were packed with customers. The service was excellent and the ambience was simply magical. You owe it to yourselves to experience Dune Billies at your earliest convenience!

Cute place. But that's where it ends. I'm stunned with how terrible the service was. The waiter - young guy with a hat - seems as if he would rather volunteer to have his finger nails pulled off that be a welcoming presence at this restaurant. It was as if we showed up to someone's house unannounced and asked to be fed. Never welcomed us beyond a mumbled "howdy", after taking the order, which at 9am took 30 minutes to receive, we never saw him until I got up to ask for boxes. He didn't bring the drinks - that was a young girl who also looked completely miserable and who just arrived on shift - nor did he bring out the food. That woman actually was cheery and didn't make us feel bad for being there.

Now, the food. I'm no longer a vegetarian, but I spent 20 years as one. News flash.. vegetarians also want their food to have flavor. That $14 breakfast wrap was one of the saddest, flavorless things I've ever eaten. No, I take that back. It tasted like i opened a can of diced tomatoes and poured it on a fajita. It was so wet, from both the tomatoes and the wet spinach, that it couldn't hold together. Even our dog, who will eat eggs ALL THE TIME, had one bite and wouldn't touch the rest.

My boys were mostly satisfied with the breakfast burrito, but said that the only thing that flavored it was the green salsa on the side. So maybe seasoning food isn't their strong point.

Even when bringing our check and boxes, bro said nothing, dropped things on the table. And walked away. Please note I didn't ever complain about their trash food while there. I guess he is either just miserable or hates his job. Ownership might want to discuss how he represents Dune Billies, and that a kind server or host can go a long way.

Upon arrival, this place had half the tables filled, not half the seats or half the restaurant. We were shown their homemade signature Blueberry muffins. Over a dozen. Display of fresh fruit and salads. There were 4 cooks and 3 wait staff with 2-3 older ladies running the floor talking to common patrons. We waited 20 minutes for our beverages. Ordered food, all breakfast fair before noon. One pre-made quiche with Blueberry muffin, 4 fried eggs and bacon orders. Very basic, very simple. Everyone in the dinner was eating. One got served while we waited to place our drink order. After placing our food order 3 more tables were seated, half full. All 3 of those tables Ordered and were served before we received our food or even checked on. 3 in our group were out of drinks when they checked in. Still no food. My child fell asleep waiting. Another table was seated and served. It was nearly an hour after arriving. All of the patrons were gone that began, the next set of 3 were leaving, and we get told they sold out of the Blueberry muffins! Some lame "preorder" story that picked up late. I told them I wanted to leave and cancel our order. Of course food was ready then. I had to get it to go. We waited 1.5 hours for fried eggs, for my family. I do it at home with less equipment in far less time. Opened the to- go boxes and all the food was thrown in on each other, fruit with fried eggs and bacon on toast. So cute. Our family travels a lot and this was one...

Went at about 1130 on a Sunday at the beginning of October, with 6 people. Only waited about 15 minutes. Sat outside at a picnic table with an umbrella. Downfall, the Suns was a blazing. It was still so worth it!! The coffee was so good & I am so picky about my coffee. They offered us a blueberry muffin to try. Michael, our server, said he made it. I could have eaten the entire muffin myself, so fresh! The table had a turkey BLT, the sausage quiche, the captains dish (I loved the potatoes in this does, cooked crispy), began with egg and they accommodated the sandwich with bacon instead of sausage, so told it was so light and fresh. They had a special chicken salad. I was told it was very good, and the croissants tasted homemade. Purchased a spinach quiche and pot pie to take home. Both are so very delicious! Also, took home the special crumble and it looks amazing, just too full to try. Service was nice, refills in coffee and water. They were patient and easy to accommodate any requests. They offer quiches and pie for purchase whole for $30. Highly recommend for those looking for something to bring to the beach out for a light breakfast or for a dessert. This place is a 10 out...
