The Cheddar Box Cafe — Restaurant in Middletown

Saturday 10/19/2024, 14 of us from the Condo Association at Swan Pointe met at The Cheddar Box for lunch. Julie was our waitress and Jenna was the Hostess but was also helping out as a Server. The restaurant was filling up pretty fast. It was cute the way it was split in half with a deli on the left side and then we went through a doorway and it was a quaint little restaurant. Julie went around the tables getting our drink orders while we looked over the menu. There was a great variety of sandwiches, salads, and soups. They had Sourdough bread on the tables and there were three types of bread you could have for sandwiches, White, Wheat and Rye. You could get 1/2 Sandwiches and a cup of soup. There were chicken dishes and Julie, our waitress told us that 2 days a week they have a Fish Meal that is fantastic. Some of the sandwiches that were ordered today were Pimento Cheese, Benedict Cheese, BLT, Tuna, and Chicken Salad. They had a Sweet Chili Chicken, that looked really good. Their menu was very easy to pull up and download. Everything went flawlessly and the food was so good. Julie and Jenna kept our glasses filled and even suggested desserts but everyone in our group was so full, there were no takers, but next time I bet we all stop eating a bit sooner, so we have room for their desserts! Honestly, this place has a lot of room for improvement. The food felt more like something you could prepare at home—think deli-style sandwich meat paired with store-bought condiments from Kroger rather than a dining experience that justifies going out. The salads resembled what you might find at a Walmart deli, which was quite disappointing.

Additionally, there was a lack of guidance when it came to the menu. Being first-time visitors, we expected a bit more explanation or suggestions, rather than just being asked, "What can I get you?" A thorough menu explanation is essential if you want to leave a lasting impression.

The customer service also left much to be desired. We were greeted with little more than silence upon entering; a simple "Good afternoon" would have gone a long way.

Overall, I would rate this establishment a 3. The offerings of cold cuts and salads with inexpensive dressing simply don't meet the expectations for a pleasant outing, and sadly, we won’t...

Thank goodness I don't live close to the Cheddar Box Cafe, because I would eat there for every meal. Don't be alarmed when the parking lot is full and you can't find a space, just be patient because it's worth the wait - keep driving around looking for a spot. I dropped in today and got meals for several days, like a huge portion of delicious Lasagna, the best honey pecan chicken salad you'll ever have, and Cheesy Stuffed Chicken and Chicken Almond Crunch are my favorites. Times are tough with staffing, and you couldn't tell it today by the quick and friendly service. Even if you have to wait a few minutes - it's well worth the wait. I have never had a bad experience here. You are missing out if you haven't tried this amazing spot and of course - the Cheddar Pecan Torte! I guarantee you'll love it or I'll eat whatever you order.
