Review from a real Mexican from El Paso, TX😆 (fyi long review)

My boyfriend and I went on Memorial Day 5/26/25. It was pretty empty but a few of the places that were open. I had been telling my boyfriend that I wanted to eat at a place with some chips and salsa. Something typical we get in most restaurants in EP. But ok, here in Midland obviously I haven’t had a restaurant with any good Mexican food yet. I gave this place a chance. Even though I was starving I was not craving anything from their menu 😩 I opted to play it safe and get the Trio Fajitas. While waiting, I was trying out their salsas. The chips were good, but the salsas wow not even a hint of spice or flavor 😭 the only decent one was one of the four they brought us. The tomatillo salsa literally tasted like they added sugar, it was so sweet to me. The other was just plain tomato sauce. When my food arrived I asked the server if he could please bring me more of the only salsa I had liked and he said he would bring me that one plus an habanero salsa that was spicy. Well none were spicy to me but a little better than the other ones. The FOOD. Okay, let’s talk about the food. $30 for a fajita skillet I expected something good. Well, first off my food smelled like sweet or bbq. I was like uhh?? It didn’t even smell like they had cooked it with some spices or anything. The fajitas were so bland 2/10. The chicken was ok 4/10 and the shrimp had bbq sauce on top , like what??? 1/10. I proceed to make myself a taco, then realize they only gave me 3 tortillas!! Oh lord I wasn’t having it but whatever it was just to try it out. The rice was fine 5/10. The beans surprisingly weren’t sweet nor did they add bbq sauce I give those a 7/10. Food experience I give this place 2/10.

Service: I must say our server was very sweet and attentive. He keeps refilling our tea’s, and was checking up on us. So he’s service is a 10/10.

Hostess: eh they were whatever, nothing good or bad to say about them.

Atmosphere: I liked the place, it has potential and it is clean. I liked the hacienda vibes. The few people there seemed to be having a good time. I just wish the food was actually good and authentic 😣 it’s not even Tex Mex, just plain, not seasoned Mexican food.

It’s just my personal opinion, from what I see other people seem to like it and...

On July 9th at 09:00PM, we came to Abuelo’s like we always do when we are in town. We are from Waco, so it’s always a nice thing to look forward to when we are in Midland. When we walked in to be seated, the host told us that only high tops were available as the rest of the seating sections were closed already. It was only 9 PM. We decided to stay and were seated at one of the high top tables, and Yohannes the server promptly came to our table. We quickly discovered that he was the only server still working, and the other employees were standing around chatting or cleaning. It was clear for us that he was overwhelmed as there was at least five tables remaining to be served. The other employees offered no help whatsoever. Halfway through our meal, one of the female employees shouted that her tables took too long to leave and complained about having to clean her area. She continued to be impolite and unprofessional, cursing and waving her hands about the inconvenience. It was clear that not only us, but the other guests were very uncomfortable with the scene. It was clear that most of the employees did not want to work anymore and we’re just standing around waiting for 10 PM to arrive. Through all of this, our waiter, Yohannes remained professional and polite to us. Somehow, that same female employee after causing a scene, started arguing with our server Yohannes about having to recheck her section and sweep around the tables that she had clearly missed. She was refusing to have to re-clean her area, but Yohannes offered to help her and show her how to sweep correctly. It was at this point the host came over to our section and started making jokes to the female employee making the scene worse as she was already not happy about re-cleaning her area. The host also loudly said he was going to close the doors early at 9:55 to keep other clients from coming in and eating. Our experience ended in a very uncomfortable way with employees that clearly had nobody managing them. Zero respect for their coworker Yohannes and none for the customers. We decided to leave without finishing our food. The one star is only for Yohannes. We would leave zero...

Wow, and not in a good way. Showed up around 6pm on a Monday 1/23/22. Wasn’t really busy. I was really hungry. Might be the worst plate of Mexican food I’ve ever had. I didn’t even finish my margarita and I LOVE margaritas. First look at the plate, there is cheese on it. I requested no cheese on my tacos which there wasn’t cheese on them, but somehow melted cheese was on my plate. I wanted guac, onions and cilantro on my tacos. I got the cilantro and onions but no guac, not even on the side which is how it’s suppose to come. There was barely any rice on the plate and the rice was drier than summers in Midland and barely room temperature. The beans were super disappointing. Ala Charra beans should have some soup/broth, there was barely any and they were also barely warm. The fajita meat was ok. Look at the tortilla, I’m not sure what kind of tortilla that is. It’s not corn, but I’m not sure that’s a flour tortilla either. That little plate of food was like $16.59 plus tax. I had taken a bite or two of the taco before the picture I took, but the beans and rice I didn’t touch until after the pic. I took one bite of both the rice and beans and they were TERRIBLE. The chips and salsa were best part of the meal and they were just ok, the frozen margarita was fair, albeit expensive. $11 for a grande. My waitress did her job and was pretty attentive for the first 5-7 mins I was there. After that I didn’t see her again until she checked on me after I was done with the plate and she asked me how the food was and if everything was ok. I should of complained then but at that point I was so disappointed and hungry I was just ready to leave. My experience here was unfortunately really bad. I would love to get my money back because no part of my...

Heard good things, so was excited. Being from the Valley, I’m always looking for Mexican food that reminds me of home. When you walk in, you’re not greeted by either of the hostess. You just casually wait at the front til they get off their phones and ask you how many. Got seated at a table for four, with one of the legs being bent. Leaned to one side, and I had to use their sugar packets to stabilize it. Our waitress was great, besides instantly asking if we were ready to order dinner. We let her know we wanted to order drinks first, and survey the menu. She came back often, and was timely. Solid waitress. The food is lackluster, and bland. I assume to cater to all, you leave the spices out and give the slight taste. Out of the three salsas, none had heat. We ordered the large guac, and it came as a few scoops of purée guacamole with some tomato’s cut up on top. Same texture as you’d imagine frosting being squeezed from a bag. Fajitas for two, was our order for dinner. They allow you to choose 4 options. We opted for double meat and double veggies. We got what one would assume would be for one on the beef fajitas, and stir fry veggies soaked in butter. They also gave us a small side of beans and rice (the same amount you’d get elsewhere for one) to share, and our waitress confirmed the individual plates have even less. The beef fajitas had no spices, and instead were grilled like a regular steak. You’d taste the same at Outback. I wouldn’t recommend coming here for Tex-Mex nor Mexican food. Though this could be a good place to bring kids, as everything was plain.
