We had a wonderful experience at Syd's!! First impression was how cool the building was and we took many guesses as to what it had been at one time (still not sure). And the maritime decor was perfect considering the menu and the proximity to Presque Isle. While they had a lot of seafood to offer (including fresh caught Lake Erie Perch), they had a nice variety of other entrees and appetizers that were not seafood. In my opinion, it was a perfect sized menu (if you have worked in food, you know that too many options can be a very scary thing!!). My husband ordered the chicken marsala and I order the open-faced prime rib sandwich (off of the weekly specials menu). His came with 2 sides and mine, while usually served with fries, I ordered with mashed potatoes. We also, both ordered a cup of wedding soup. They served the soup first (the way it should be!) and it was amazing. Husband said it was the best wedding soup he had ever had and I am inclined to agree. Then our meals came... WOW! The portion sizes were incredible. The chicken marsala itself was enough for a meal or more and then the loaded baked potato he got was quite large. While I didnt try any it looked well prepared and smelled wonderful. My prime rib was perfectly done medium, a very large portion, melt in your mouth tender and perfect dipped in the au jus. Mashed potatoes tasted just like my homemade mashed, so big "heck yeah" on those. To put this over the top, our waitress was so sweet, friendly, wonderful and accommodating. We had a great time and very much look forward to going back soon. Prices were very reasonable (especially considering portion size and quality). Very much worth going!! Thank you Syd's Place for a great...
Read moreWE gave Syd's, under new management, a chance last night, and I'll say it is good, but a work in progress. The decoration inside has cleaner lines and appears brighter, more full of light.
Three in our party, two had Syd's Fish Fry and one the Blacken Walleye special. Have had Syd's Fish Fry many times and it includes New England Clam Chowder, salad, fried Haddock, a potato, had German Potato salad, and bread and butter.
The "Clam" Chowder was very creamy and luscious, but devoid of clams and potatoes and bacon. Having been brought up on Long Island and Connecticut I know both chowders', the Superior Manhattan and the good New England, and this was not a good New England Clam Chowder. It was an excellent cream soup, but not by any stretch of the imagination a clam chowder.
The salad, while cold-good, was pedestrian with way, way too many croutons.
The German potato salad seemed to come from a can, was good, but again pedestrian. My wife and mother-in-law make much superior German Potato Salad.
The Haddock was excellent, with the fish flesh being very tender and the coating crispy and not over cooked.
The Blackened Walleye was reviewed as very good and tasty.
Service was good and friendly. The way in to Syd's still seems oddly laid out, but form follows function.
We will go back to Syd's as the food was good. The three of us got out of there with a $63.00 w/tax or $21.00 each with coffee and tea, so value was very good.
Still a work in progress under new ownership, but...
