I'll start by saying that we eat out frequently & l am used to scratch-made top notch cuisine. I've eaten in some of the best restaurants both in the U.S. & in Europe. We decided to pop in to Colony after a visit to Presque Isle. The restaurant was nearly empty when we arrived yet, bizarrely, we were asked if we had a reservation. I did note that a large party came in shortly after us to be seated in the back room for some sort of private event. I further noted that every customer who came in was asked if they had a reservation. One group turned around and went back out citing that the restaurant was "too fancy" for them. The hostess made no real effort to keep these customers. I'm sure the potential customers perceived, based upon the nearly empty dining room, that Colony was being discriminatory towards them. The service was pretty good except that I ordered a beef on weck & received some sort of burger with pulled beef, peppers, onions & cheese on top. The waitress noticed as soon as she put it in front of me and stated that she could take it back to the kitchen but it would likely be awhile before I would get anything else due to the large party in the back. I decided to just eat what was in front of me. The burger was good, one of the better burgers I've tasted. Sweet potato fries were also good. Luckily, the burger was way too much for me to eat as the seafood scampi my son ordered was absolute garbage & I gave him the rest of my burger. To be specific, the mussels were rubbery & could not be chewed. The rest of the meal was flavorless. We also ordered artichoke dip with crab for an appetizer. It was bitter & fishy. My son also had french onion soup which he stated was not one of the best he had. Overall, I would not return & I wouldn't recommend to anyone looking for a place to pop in for a bite to eat. It's clear the owners don't really care about stop in customers & are more focused on those that reserve for events &/or catering. That being said, my recommendation is for the owners. They should close the restaurant to stop in customers and focus on the customers they actually want to serve...those with large events and...
Read moreWe recently moved to Erie and had the kids fly in for the weekend. Decided to try The Colony for dinner after hearing of their fresh Lake Erie Perch. We sat on the outside patio, Saturday August 21. We noticed a table of 4 people near us. One man at the table acted like the restaurant owner or manager. Each person at his table of 4 was visibly intoxicated. The man/Manager walked up behind the bar and helped himself to refill their drinks, then stumbled back to the table with glazed eyes.
Next, the drunk man/Manager and his cronies got up from their table and walked 6 feet to another table and proceeded to chain smoke. SEE PHOTOS. In between their table and the outdoor patio full of patrons sits a 3-foot circumference industrial fan meant to blow fresh air through the restaurant. Instead, it blew their second hand chain-smoke straight at the tables!
We were seated at the first patio table receiving the fan! We were choking and asked them to change the direction on the fan. They told us that couldn’t be done so they shut the fan off only to turn it back on within two minutes. So, I pulled the plug on the fan so my children could breath while we finished our dinner. During dinner, the drunk man/Manager and his cronies gave us the STINK EYE, making us hugely regret our decision to EVER eat at the Colony.
We paid our $200 bill, and tipped our server handsomely (it wasn’t her fault - It was her Manager’s). On leaving, the drunk man/ Manager said “GOOD, THEY’RE LEAVING…I hope they don’t come back”.
Oh you can be sure of it, we won’t be back. Nor will other business. I have told my firm’s administrator about our experience, you see my firm had hired The Colony to cater our Eight Great Tuesday’s tent only weeks before. She was disgusted that management would act that way towards their patrons.
Hey Colony, have you heard of the Clean Air Act? It says NO SMOKING within 25 feet of a restaurant. Clearly you are in violation. SEE PHOTOS. GROSS!
Important to note, the smoker in the picture was the next round of smokers spewing secondhand smoke on the patrons and not part of the original drunk Manager’s...

It strikes one as a campy, family owned, family oriented establishment with a regular, more mature clientele. There are 3 dining areas, let's call one the bar/fireplace section, then the main dining room, and finally there is a covered patio where they have live, acoustic entertainment. We sat in the main dining area. Service was friendly and adequate. They provide a bread and butter basket. Menu pricing was moderate with an adequate selection for all tastes. We ordered an appetizer sampler, chicken parmesan (x2), sea scallops in Italian herbs, and the beer battered scrod dinners. The sampler was average. No cheese in the cheese wedges, they were just breading shells. LOL. The potato skins were tasty though. Our salads arrived, the kids salads were fine, but my wife and I got a heavy dosing of red onion and croutons. That was a little bit dissatisfying. The entrees arrived hot and looked delicious. My kids enjoyed their chicken parm dinners and I enjoyed my beer battered scrod. My wife found her scallops to be unpalatable due to their taste after eating 2/6. I tried one and determined that it was flavored by burnt garlic and herbs in brown butter (I've made the same mistake in my own kitchen), which gave the scallops a bitter taste. We did not send the meal back because my wife did eat 2 scallops and the baked potato and I ate a scallop to verify the flavor. Overall the experience wasn't terrible, the meal was adequate, and I would not discourage anyone from going there to eat. I think we expected a stronger level of execution based on the feeling that this is a more upscale...
