This is our third trip here and our third 3 out of 5 stars experience. Those in our party who got the food they ordered said it was "fine". They wouldn't go out of their way to avoid the place, but wouldn't purposely seek it out either.
This Sunday, after a busier-than-expected family weekend at GCSU they were out of lamb for the gyros (ok, so they'll know to order more for next year's parents' weekend). Two of us ordered chicken gyros. We thought they tasted really off and noticed our "gyros" were different from each others. We asked the server why one had green peppers (not included on menu description) but no onions, and the other had onions no peppers since we ordered the same items. Responding, the server referenced "chicken pita wraps". We pointed out we ordered gyros and she said "they're basically the same thing." (The wraps have hummus instead of tzatziki sauce, peppers, and different spices than the gyro.) She did apologize but said she "thought they were the same thing." She was super-polite and apologetic, which we appreciated. (In hindsight, it appears we were charged for wraps which are $2 more than gyros but the person paying didn't consider there'd be a difference in price.)
We understand there's always a learning curve (no idea how long she's worked there) but the servers should at least know the menu and if someone orders a "gyro" they should put in an order for a "gyro". On our last trip there we had a couple of questions about items, and the server was like a deer in the headlights. A little extra training would likely be a better experience for future patrons, and better tips for the servers.
We also ordered the zucchini fritters, which the menu indicates are fried in chickpea flour. We thought that meant the exterior was coated in chickpea flour, but instead, it was mostly like a falafel ball with some zucchini mushed around it and then fried. Not a complaint, just a "be aware of" as it wasn't a flavor or texture we expected, and it didn't come with the hot chili sauce as indicated on the menu.
If you're with someone who has mobility issues, be very careful, especially if going to use the restrooms. Understandably, it's an old building and there are limitations with what they can do, but there are definitely ways to address the consistently uneven flooring. Particularly if heading to the bathrooms, and they could definitely use cleaning, some repairs, and a fresh coat of paint on the doors. Between the condition of the restrooms, and all of the menus and tables being sticky, I admit I'm a little scared of what it's like in the kitchen. (I'd prefer not to know at...
Read moreThis is the first two star review I've given but in this case I think it's warranted. The menu is deceptively labeled, likely by accident, but those with a dairy-allergy or following a vegan diet be forewarned: this restaurant carries no vegan alternative cheese or yogurt products so many products labeled vegan actually aren't. The tzatziki, feta cheese, and even the pita has dairy in it, so as you peruse the options marked as vegan know that any items with these ingredients are definitely not vegan. If you do end up here with these dietary restrictions, the hummus, dolmades, and tabouli are safe bets.
Fortunately, the server was very accommodating and allowed substitution of dressings/hummus in the place of tzatziki and was patient with verifying our many questions about the menu labeling. Her exceptional five star service is the reason this review is two stars instead of one.
However, you will be paying full price for substitutions or omissions of key ingredients in most of the appetizers and entrees if you have any of the aforementioned dietary restrictions.
The veggies served as an alternative to pita for the hummus plate (pictured) consisted of mostly raw onions, who dips raw onions in hummus??
The food seemed likely Sysco systems, though fresh and not frozen, there's evidently not much thought given to sourcing locally. While portions are generous you'll be paying moderate prices for lower quality Mediterranean.
If you're vegan or dairy free, you might want to skip this one until they decide to accommodate your...
Read moreBecause this restaurant is located in the old section of Mville, when walk into this place, and if not for the 3 flat screen T.V.s on the wall, you definitely feel like you stepped into a time tunnel. And, the place looks smaller than it actually is (there is more seating the the other area, which, unless you walk by it, isn't noticeable; and at first, this is what I thought).
Since it was seat yourself, I took a seat at a raised table for 2 (I could've sat at the bar (2x last week). But, being Sunday, I wanted some resemblance of decorum. ;-)
I ordered the Salmon Platter (grilled Salmon, with rice, grilled vegetables, pita bread and tzatziki sauce) with a glass of the House Pinot Gregio.
Now, the rice could have been hotter (temperature wise). But, the meal was frick'n fantastic (5 Stars +).
For dessert, I had planned on having Baklava with ice cream (a first for me). But, they were out of ice cream :-( . And, I had decided not to have it. But, being Sunday, and celebrating my 1st week in Mville, I said, what the hell, and ordered just the Baklava.
Well, here I got a first for sure! The Baklava was served warm! I can just imagine how that would have tasted with ice cream. Oh, my!
One nice thing about this place, the chairs are padded. ;-) So, it's good for those with tender tushies.
Now, I really debated on giving 'em 5 Stars. But, between the rice, no ice cream and my chair was completely ripped across the front edge, with no noticeable efforts to fix it, I can't give 'em better than a 4.4.
But, I'll...
