A workhorse of a diner. It doesn't do bibimbap as good as Cook, or jigae as good as Tofu House, or bulgogi and banchan as good as Dong Yang, and it certainly isn't as expensive as Dong Hae, but what it does do is deliver the overall most consistent and very good Korean dining experience in town.
The standouts are the Kimchi Jigae and Ja Jang Myeong, both are pictured below.
The kimchi soup comes in two sizes: a sensibly proportioned lunch version served 11-3 M-F (pictured below) with 4 banchan and a bowl of rice or a gigantic bubbling cauldron of pork and kimchi with more banchan (not pictured).
The black bean noodles are enormously proportioned (definitely expect to have left overs...also, don't wear white clothing while attempting to stay spot-free while slurping up the noodles) and expertly seasoned. If you have an aversion to spice or kimchi...well, what are you doing here, but this is the thing you should be ordering. It is also a good "normie" non bulgogi introduction to Korean food. It, like all the entrees on the menu, come with banchan.
Vegetarians will find a very short menu to pick from. There is tofu soup and you can ask them to leave the meat off the bibimbap. Vegans may have an even harder time finding something to eat, as Korean soups are often based on or infused with fish sauce or anchovy broth.
Other things worth trying are the excellent Kimbap appetizer (Korean rice and seaweed wrap with pickled radish and meat), the good ol stand by bulgogi, the a-little-bit-of-everything hangover cure Budae Jigae (Army Base stew made popular after the war when Spam and hotdogs were one of the only readily available sources of protein for a rebuilding country), and the spicy Ojingeo-bokkeum, which is a squid based stir fry.
All in all the main entrees here are professionally and consistently prepared with huge proportions. Nothing on the menu ventures too far above $12 and the lunch menu is filled with more sensibly proportioned options for less than $8. It's a really welcome addition to the local Korean food scene and it should be near the top of your list if you're in the mood for a little kimchi...
Read moreNot what it used to be. Visiting my alma mater for the first time in 2 years and was excited for my takeout at Kbop like older times and my experience was extremely disappointing at best. My advice to others is to run fast and hard when you see an Asian girl with blue hair at the counter- One of the rudest servers I've ever met: cold, impatient and indifferent. I ordered 2 dishes for my girlfriend and I, waited for 40 minutes and she didn't even bother to help us. Our inquiry about our order was met with a condescending 'There's no order for XX' when I literally ordered from her and waited for my food in front of her for 40 minutes. And it looked like there was some differential treatments going on- people who were dining in or picking up for deliveries were getting their food before take out orders. At least 5 non-takeout orders went in after ours and were completed first. Food was mediocre, but any restaurant has its bad day and that's cool. What's infuriating was the server's attitude. On top of that? She wasn't wearing a mask like her coworkers. Not to mention all her talking and sniffling when she was plating customer's food. Kbop used to be my favorite korean restaurant in town and I always felt welcomed and respected by the crew. But today was a different story, I'm only giving 2 stars because of the other 2 male servers who have been awesome since forever and they did the same today. Unfortunately it's unlikely that this review will change anything since the lady I was talking about seems to be the restaurant owner's daughter. Saw other reviews mentioning a rude server too and got me wondering if they're all about the...
Read moreIf it could be a 0 stars, I could do it over and over again. I was there couple days ago and had a terrible experience. I ordered 3 dishes for me and my friend. I picked up the first dish, then I saw my other dish came out about 10 mins later. I knew it was mine so I came up to the counter and ask is that my order. A tall Asian guy who work there all the time (I've been there a lot) look at me, then yelled at me if I see my order number was up on the screen. I said not yet, and I go back to my table and wondering what wrong with him. 10 mins later, the dish still there. After awhile, he push my number and I came pick up that dish. I asked him I have one more dish and it's the soup, how long more I have to wait. He look very angry and ask me why I pick up someone else's soup. Seriously ???? I'm waiting for my soup and now he accused me for pick up someone else's soup???? I told him look at my table, does he see any soup on my table. He look then walk away, not even saying sorry. 20 mins later, I'm still waiting for my soup. I had to go up to the counter again and ask where is my last order? Another girl work there told me they messed up my order and will work on it now. WTH ??? I'LL NEVER GO BACK THERE AGAIN. They messed up my order, then accused me for picking up someone else order without double check. They're not even busy at that time and it's not like they don't see what people have on...
