Ordered (for take-out) the standard cheese steak and an order of onion rings. TIP: Parking can be a nightmare in Dinkytown so allow for time to find a spot.
The good: Excellent bread, even after zapping it a bit to warm up the ingredients. Onion rings appear to be beer-battered which made them tasty, but I thought they were a tad greasy (which is to be expected with such thick batter) but my wife had no such issues. The cheese steak is certainly worth it as far as size and quantity of meat goes. While the order of rings was not plentiful, the size of most of the rings makes up for that.
The not-so-good: This first comment is a general one as we have experienced this with other cheese steak sandwiches in the Twin Cities. The steak is chopped up so much that it's closer to lose hamburger than thin slices of steak. For reference, if you ever had a Cousins' Sub's cheese steak, you know what I'm talkin' about. I like cheese steaks that feature ultra-thin slices.
Both my wife and I thought the meat was significantly under-seasoned. I also found it dry but she didn't share that opinion. Lastly, I have no idea why the cheese steaks establishments in the Twin Cities melt the cheese on the roll, then layer the cheese and veggies over the roll, then put on the steak. I get that maybe it's because the sandwich comes open face (although who knows why). Th Cousins' Sub's ones feature the meat cooked on the flattop, then covered with any veggies, and the cheese is melted over it all. The entire insides are then inserted into the roll. But Tono does the same thing as you do so maybe it is a regional thing?. When you melt the cheese into the bread, it doesn't allow the cheese and meat to "marry" their flavors.
Finally, staff were friendly and amiable. By the way, I chose the wrong night to visit since it was the same night and time of day as the LGBTQ protesters were on the opposite corner protesting the Dave Chappelle show at the Varsity. Hopefully, on a non-concert night, parking is...
Read moreYo, lemme talk to you straight — South Philly style, alright? You call yourselves Frank from Philly? Then you better rep that name with some real consistency, you feel me?
Here’s the deal: I’ve had a bomb cheesesteak from you guys before, no lie — so I know it can be good. But the key word here? Consistency. And right now, you ain't got it.
You got one person back there on the grill who knows what they’re doing — the lady, she’s solid. She puts love into that steak. You can taste it. Respect. But that young dude that’s usually on the grill? Yo, my man’s makin’ steaks like he don’t even wanna be there. Zero passion, no pride, no love. Feels like I'm gettin’ a sandwich from that Drexel Pizza spot, not a place with Philly in the name. That’s a problem.
And every time I order takeout, I gotta ask for a bag like I’m buggin'. C’mon cuz, that should be automatic. The Spanish lady on the pizza side? She gets it. She cares. The pie she makes? Got that same feel as grabbin' a slice from Lorenzo's at 2AM after leavin' Deco back in the day. That’s the vibe. That's the standard.
Because of that one dude killin’ the steak game in a bad way, you dropped from a solid 5 stars to a shaky 3. Only reason you ain’t lower is 'cause I know what a good steak from you can taste like.
Oh — and another thing: put some ketchup by the grill. I know y’all in Minnesota, but let’s keep it real — a lotta us like ketchup on a steak. At least make it an option. Respect the culture you claim, ya feel me?
You got one more shot from me. I’m givin' it another go. But Pops? He’s 75, and he ain’t comin’ back — he was tight about that last one. Don’t make me write y’all off for good. Get that grill game right, and do Philly proud....
Read moreIf I could give this place a 0 star rating I would! I have never been treated worse than I was tonight at Frank and Andreas Pizza. I am a student at the UMN and would occasionally eat their from time to time when I was near by. However, I will not be returning because tonight my friends and I were racially profiled by an incompetent manager! I ordered two cheese pizzas and seasoned fries, and my two friends each ordered a slice of buffalo pizza. We then payed at the counter and sat down to wait for our food. A couple minutes after receiving our food, the owner approached my friend, ACCUSING my friends and I of not paying for all of our pizzas. We were all very confused as to what he could have meant. Nonetheless, we started pulling up our bank statements to prove that money was definitely taken out of our accounts. Not only did we prove that we paid, two of his employees vouched that they had rung us up and that we PAID. Instead of apologizing, we were berated for our tone. I'm not exactly sure how the manager expects us to react to racial discrimination (feel free to respond, I would genuinely like to know!) I was horrified that the unprofessional manager would take it upon himself to try to embarrass us in front of employees and other patrons, rather than simply look it up himself or ask his employees (WILD concept, I know). My friends and I will never return to this establishment and I would suggest that no one else does either!
Update: My friends and I were able to meet with the owner and manager (which was the employee I was speaking of in my review) and receive an apology. I hope that this was a learning experience for...
