I ordered the rice and goat meat, and it was incredible. The goat meat was so tender, just falling off the bone, and perfectly seasoned. That level of tenderness is something I’ve come to expect from good Somali restaurants, especially when it comes to goat, and Mama Safia’s definitely lived up to that expectation. The rice was aromatic and flavorful, and the portion size was generous—great value for the price.
What really made the meal stand out was the combination of soup and green sauce that comes with the dish. The soup was light and comforting, a perfect way to start the meal. But the green sauce? That’s where the magic happened. It was spicy, fresh, and absolutely addictive. I love spicy food, and this hit the spot without being overwhelming. It added such a kick to the rice and meat—I found myself dipping every bite in it.
The atmosphere of the restaurant was warm and welcoming, just like a home kitchen. You could tell the food was made with love and tradition. The service was friendly, and everything was served quickly, despite the busy lunch hour.
If you’re in Minneapolis and want to try authentic Somali cuisine, I highly recommend stopping by Mama Safia’s Kitchen. It’s a hidden gem that deserves all the love it gets. I’ll definitely be coming back the next time...
Read moreI had dinner here last night. The hosts were extremely friendly. Abdullah in particular was very friendly and helped me understand all the options I had. I got a chicken and beef combo on rice (forgot what it was called) and it was amazing. Best part about it was that it wasn't even on the menu but they happily made the combo. Also got a free banana with it. The mango juice was the perfect choice for the food and the tea to follow it all up with was just perfect. A little bit too sweet but still very very good. The Sambusa was brilliant as well. Best thing though...it was all halal!
They need to work a bit more on their local marketing because none of the Uber drivers knew about this Somali gem, and they were all Somali. Maybe reach out to the local communities so drivers would recommend your...
Read moreI had always wanted to try Somali food and this was EXCELLENT. I was greeted by the owner’s daughter who introduced herself as BB, who kindly gave me suggestions and sat with me while I ate. She taught me the way to eat Somali dishes with my hands, explaining the enzymes also added to the flavor profile. The goat and beef were very tender and the spicy green sauce was great.
We had very pleasant discussions about life for the Somali community in the United States. She was very passionate about her community and the kindness and generosity radiated from her. I was also saddened to hear this was a second restaurant building, the first had been destroyed during the George Floyd protests several summers ago.
I would send every person in the city to this restaurant if I could, for the...
