Okay, here is the deal; back in they day this one one of the MAIN chicken joints. Before KFC dominated to T.C.'s chicken market, you had your Church's Chicken (yes, we had a ton of them up here), Porky's (one of the first), Chester's (Deli chicken) and your Popeye's (there were two location, east and west Lake St.). When all these closed, there was only one Popeye's left, and it went downhill in a hurry. The chicken is nasty, dry, fried in old grease (either need to change the grease of the filter), and they only take cash, no credit (strange huh) the service is horrible, they do not honor national specials, all the ads you see on t.v. and receive in the mail are useless here. Now here is the deal; this Popeye's is not affiliated with any other Popeye's. i.e Popeye's Chicken and Biscuits v.s. Popeye's Louisiana Chicken. Recently, Popeye's Louisiana Chicken has brought 17 failing KFC's in the metro area and they all honer national specials advertised. So, Popeye's Lake St. your owners and staff manage to dismantle and Twin Cities legacy, while snubbing Minnesotans on nasty knock off Popeye's Chicken while stiffing us all on specials because you think we have no other options, now what? I mean with the real Popeye's moving in, with quality chicken (fried in clean grease) and honoring all ads!!!! It's been a long time coming, ripping of poor, clueless Uptowners, and southreners desperate for a real peice of fried chicken. Now, it seems as if you may have a new standred...
Read moreIt's cheap chicken n biscuits. You aren't coming here for fine dining, so get your cash ready. I refer to this place as the Lake Street Multicultural Community Center, since everyone from the neighborhood - Whites, Blacks, Somalis, Hispanics, Asians, EVERYBODY, loves this place and all colors under the sun can come together and scarf down some delicious chicken.
Know what you're getting yourself into before you step in the door, and you'll leave satisfied. It's always busy, so be a little patient. Everyone wants their chicken as much as you do, so don't rush it. Savor that juicy, crispy, spicy (if that's your thing) meat from your big breast or crunchy thigh. This place is legit.
(though the sides kind of suck.)
PS: Another review said this is in a "seedy area". As someone who lives 3 blocks away, I take offense to that. We aren't rich like the cake eaters who go to the new Eden Prairie Popeyes, but it's not a "seedy"...
Read moreI had the most displeasing experience going through the drive-through of this Popeyes. The man who took my order didn’t put sauce in the bag and i told him there was no sauce and he said yes there is and I looked in the bag again and said no there isn’t .. he then asked for my receipt that said i ordered sauce and he said he put sauce in the bag and I said there isn’t any sauce.. so he asked for my bag to look through it for sauce and there wasn’t any sauce.. so he threw it in the bag and laughed at me. I was a regular at Popeyes and wont be anymore as they choose their staff horribly. It was one barbecue and one buffalo sauce and I am being hassled over it by an employee.. how broke is the Popeyes industry to hassle me over sauce and tell me to pay 50 cents when on my receipt it says i ordered sauce and I didn’t get any. I was so disappointed in...
