Merlin's Rest had an absurd wait time, so we stopped by here on a whim instead, and all I can say is wow.
The food and service was amazing. Everyone in there was friendly, everything was clean, and all of the food smelled fantastic. Across everyone, we got the lamb samosa, chicken Tikka masala, chicken coconut curry, beef coconut curry, beef Rogan Josh, mango lassi, mango juice, and gulap jamun. Everything was delicious, came out fast and steaming hot, and was full of flavor without being too salty. Spice levels on the menu are definitely tuned to a Minnesotan's taste, if you want spicy you might have to go above a medium, but I'll know that for next time! The medium Tikka masala was still absolutely packed with flavor.
Overall, this is some of the best, if not the best Indian food I've eaten in years, and certainly the best I've had in this area. Definitely stop by, and give them as much business as you can. I'd imagine it's hard starting out as a new business, so let's make sure it's worth it and they can stick around for a while!
ALSO! My girlfriend is very lactose intolerant. We wanted to make sure that one of the dishes didn't have dairy in it. Our server confirmed it did have dairy in it, but said he'd have it made without milk. It was absolutely delicious, and she didn't end up feeling ill. It's huge and so nice that places are willing to adjust the menu for stuff like this, even if it is more work for them to make sure it still turns out equally delicious in the end.
10/10, keep up the good work, and we'll definitely be back with more...
Read moreNew Indian food restaurant. On the same block as Merlin's pub and on the other end, next to Viking cleaners. Street parking only. Modern upscale design. Everything was great. Spotlessly clean, attentive staff, flavorful food. I had the tomato soup for an appetizer, it was good, My garlic naan came out later it would have been better to dip with the tomato soup. I should have told them as that was my idea as I prefer my soup with crackers or bread. Also a dollop of sour cream on top would have been nice. My fault, next time. Entree ; I ordered the Chicken chili-medium spice level, it was amply portioned heavy on the meat, chilli no beans? instead came with a large bowl of rice in a separate bowl, interesting but I was not expecting that. To me a chili should have usually ground beef, beans, onions, green peppers maybe some celery and a tomato base simmered for a while...I inquired and staff said it was a curry and all curries come with a bowl of rice. Good place to share an entree or have food to bring home for another meal. I was the only one dining in Saturday afternoon - while I sat there were takeouts coming and going. I'm new to Indian food. The only other place I've been is the Himalayan and I like it so I'll be interested to try their Tikki chicken here suggested by staff and number 1 on the menu and compare.. Enjoyed myself and will be back. P.S. also looking at the reviews I tried their mango drink I think it was good. The flavors clashed with a curry and tomato soup so I just drank it like a dessert afterward. Just drink water...
Read moreHonestly I'm shocked at how disappointing the food here turned out to be despite the stellar reviews on google. My guess is that we ate here on a really really off night for them or that the folks reviewing India Kutir don't have a whole lot of experience with Indian food. I'll start off with the pros. They gave us a complimentary snack (pakoras) which were delicious. Fin.
Unfortunately the joys of good food ended there. The samosas were terrible, the pastry was doughy and the filling bland. There was a consistent theme with all the food. It tasted artificial, too sweet or simply lacking any flavor. Anyone who knows Indian food knows that the flavors are meant to be really punchy and nothing we ate came anywhere near that. We ordered paneer butter masala and the aloo gobi matar both of which were incredibly bad. The paneer butter masala may as well have been pudding because it was far too sweet. I could barely make it through a couple of bites. The aloo gobi matar was mushy and incredibly bland. The garlic naan was ok but the paratha was terrible. I also ordered some raita which also turned out to be incredibly sweet. I really wanted to love this place given how close its located to our home but this simply doesn't cut it. I'm sorry but this simply does not qualify as good Indian food. It barely qualifies as Indian food. I mean where are the flavors other than sugar? Are we going back to Mughlai cuisine before the chili pepper was...
