Taqueria El Maguey — Restaurant in Modesto

The drinks at Taqueria El Maguey are fabulous--especially the Mango Tango. I appreciated the kids menu and the solid service. The food is there to help suck up the alcohol, not to provide a culinary experience, the one exception being the prawns a la crema in a creamy white sauce. The garlic prawns were large, flayed and served with a small cupful of salsa on the side, with minimal garlic. The sauce for the a la diabla prawns tasted like it had ketchup in it. If you like spicy and flavorful Mexican food, grab a Mango Tango or two or three here and then take an Uber down the street to La Parilla. I'll be back to El Maguey for the Mango Tango, the beautiful courtyard in front, and the fabulous artwork on the walls. We've only been here a few times, and every time the service leaves a lot to be desired. Today was no different. The busser had to go get our waitress, who couldn't be bothered to do her job. The vast majority of the time we were there she was quite literally just standing around. But that's whatever- if that's how you function at work, cool for you. My bigger issue is the fact they have a service charge for not using cash, something that is becoming more and more prevalent, which is complete BS, in my opinion, that's your cost of doing business, but I digress. The bill came with the 4% already added to the items. Well, I paid with cash but didn't receive the 4% "discount". The price difference is super minor, but that's not the point- the point is the menu prices don't actually reflect the actual price. They just charge you the 4% regardless of how you pay. They overcharged for 49 dollars and I tipped. I called back to talk to a manager and I got the waitress. She explained that because I don't have a receipt they can't look up my information. This is a lie. You have to keep records for tax purposes. She said she would give me the owner's number. She waited 3 minutes and said she couldn't find it. Then 5 minutes later she told me she can't give out the owner's number. She told me to come down and show my receipts. How can I show receipts for something I didn't purchase?
