Aozora — Restaurant in Montclair

Very disappointed 😥

We have come here 2x: The first time was on a week night and it was decent service. And we were so excited to come back for the 2nd time...

But when we came on a Friday night....first off, we got called a half hour before our reservation to be told they are rescheduling for an hour later! We made the reservation as soon as they opened at 12 p.m..

Then we show up and still had waited 15 minutes to be seated. Then to make it worse, the actual food services was INSANELY slow. After we placed our order, we had to wait a total of 2 hours before we got our food....not to mentioned we had to hunt servers down to get water. It was very frustrating!!

While the sushi was delicious the actual rice dishes were unevenly seasoned and portioned and when we complained about that, we were met with condescending tones and a fight all to comp at least 1 dish. Seriously, who tells guests we should be more understanding of wait times when there is a show at the Wellmont??! How would anyone know that unless they went? Not okay at all!

We are vegan. It is difficult to find really, really good vegetable sushi. Aozora takes so much care with theirs.

I have had the avocado sushi roll twice now. It is perfection. I still can't figure out how they can get such perfect avocado every time. No hint of brown, perfect ripeness, beautiful and creamy.

The sweet potato sushi is the best I have ever had. The tempura on the sweet potato is perfectly crispy and holds up in the sushi roll.

We also ordered the pumpkin soup, and they were able to omit the shrimp and keep it vegan for us. So good and different from other pumpkin soups I've had. The chives were a great addition.

We shared the tofu terriyaki, which was not only beautiful, but delicious. Tender, delicate triangles of silken tofu with a perfectly light and crispy tempura with a hint if salt. The terriyaki sauce was subtle and delicious.

I was so excited to eat, i forgot to take photos first. Was so pretty when it arrived.

I generally order from this restaurant every Friday. Uni, spicy salmon with avocado &/or with cucumber are some of the options I order. I have been happy with the sushi from this establishment up until last week. I spent over 100.00$ for my entire order… 72.00$ of the order was for rancid, gritty, bad Uni!! The color was completely off. It looked beige rather than the bright orange color that it normally is! After ordering Uni from this establishment on Fridays for over 3 months consistently, I’m sure you can imagine my surprise! When I called to advise of this issue, after speaking to the Owner/Manager, I realized that I would NEVER return. To patronize me with weak excuses as to why the sushi looked & tasted as it did was beyond the scope of what I could & would comprehend!
