I've been chomping at the bit to go to this place, so I was very pleased when I convinced my chum to mosey over here for lunch yesterday. One of my favorite restaurants in the area is Vonda's in Newark (which serves the same type of soul food/Southern cuisine), so I was hoping this would be just as tasty, but in a more convenient area. It was really good, but with all due respect, it's not quite at the level it thinks it is. We decided to split the cornbread with strawberry butter app ($6), along with a separate order of mac and cheese ($8). I personally think the mac and cheese should also be available as a side, and it feels a little like upselling (it reminds me of a burger restaurant that has an additional charge for French fries), so hopefully they consider that in the future. How can you not go to a place like this and forego the mac and cheese? The cornbread was delicious. I'd never heard of strawberry butter, but it's amazing and was a perfect complement to the cornbread. My friend was a little disappointed that parts of the cornbread were cold (presumably it was baked beforehand and refrigerated before being warmed up for us), but I didn't mind too much. They should warm it up more though, which obviously wouldn't be difficult to do. I was disappointed by the mac and cheese - I thought it was dry and pretty bland. For what it's worth, my chum loved it, so we quickly negotiated a 70/30 split of the mac and cheese, which was acceptable to both parties. I got the Crispy Catfish entree ($23), with candied yams and collard greens as my sides. The catfish was excellent, with an exquisite cornmeal batter, and the tabasco-like condiment was very strong, verging on overpowering, but worked well with the fish. I loved the candied yams; great consistency and extremely tasty. This was actually my first time having collard greens. They were fine for what they were, but just not my cup of tea. I'm sure they have enough fans to go around without me. A lot of this food is top-notch, and you can definitely understand why it's popular and getting a lot of buzz in the area. Unfortunately, the service does verge on subpar. I think you should expect lengthier turnaround times for some of this food, especially the chicken (and to their credit, there is a disclaimer on the menu about the projected 30-minute cooking time for that specifically), but we intentionally picked other food because we were hungry and didn't want to wait 30 minutes to eat. It didn't matter - we still had to wait at least that long for the entrees. Additionally, the dessert menu looked amazing and we both opted to go somewhere else because we knew that ordering something else would lengthen our stay considerably, so Sweet T's is literally leaving money on the table because of that. We weren't too affected by this because we came in right around when they opened, but I do have concerns going forward that the rules of this restaurant don't really mesh with the culture they're ostensibly trying to promote. I've lived in the Deep South and I've been to my share of Southern comfort restaurants like this. By definition, it's leisurely - it takes time to make a lot of this food, and by and large, it's worth it. But in turn, you should be able to leisurely eat that food. If you're going to be really hardcore about reservations and time limits for meals, it will inevitably bang up against the lengthy food prep time. That's a really tough balance to manage, and hopefully they figure it out. My two cents? I think they should take the middle ground between the required reservations route and the Cuban Pete's, no reservations route - have a specific, limited number of reserved tables but be open to the walk-ins. If the restaurant is too busy at a given time to serve everyone who wants in, too bad. That's life sometimes. Those people will come back. There's a lot to like here, but my inclination is to go to Vonda's, knowing that their food is as good if not better than this, without the service issues.

Upon visiting Sweet T's for time with family our conversation changed drastically, upon diving into the first course. We were socially distanced, which was comforting based on the disregard other local restaurants are showing, in Montclair. We wanted to do courses and try several items, for the complete experience. With that in mind, I had a short stack of pancakes with the strawberry butter. My family had the cornbread with strawberry butter and the fried okra. I was immediately in love with that butter. Wow! The pancakes were delectably better than the norm. With cornbread being a staple at any southern restaurant I was very pleased to have theirs. It was amazing. I paired it with all of the other entrees on the menu, it will compliment, too. Let's not forget the okra. I had a member at the table that declined to try it. Just know that not only did they try it, but went back for more. 😁 At this rate, we were all trying to be conservative for other courses. 😅 Nonethless, the entrees came out with superb timing. You know how some waiters just bring you the food and force you to make a decision on whether you're going to scramble to finish or sacrifice your apps. And I do know the other option is to get upset. But, who gets upset after strawberry butter? Anyone ever have that waiter who wants you to feel guilty for eating at your own pace? We escaped those tragedies. Everything was seamless. So, here comes the ribs, the catfish and lamb cheesesteak. The view of it all is nothing short of mouthwatering. I quickly offered some catfish to others. Now, I hadn't ordered catfish in a while. I was looking forward to the experience. Therefore, I did my duty. I almost ordered more. Whew! This was definitely reminiscent of a family recipe! I loved it! The cheesesteak was a refreshing twist. My family member, who regards himself as a cheesesteak aficionado, wanted a slightly softer roll. But, in the rolls defense it had a soft interior. It's contents were a perfect unique flavoring of peppers, cheese and lamb. I'm sure he'll get that, again. Now, the ribs were fallllllling off the bones. You know this story, right? Succulent slow cooked ecstasy on a plate. Well done, chef! I didn't forget the sides. Who could? I saved some to go because I wanted to have this experience later, in the evening. The collards were my fave. I could literally pop in and just grab those as a snack. That Mac & Cheese is Sweet T's boomerang effect. You'll be back! I wrote all of this to say, you better get there before you in end up in a line! Ready with a fork, Mr. Monk

Had a girls night out with my friends from out of town. I read about this establishment in an article regarding black owned businesses that is a must try for southern cuisine in NJ. Figured this would be a perfect outing. The establishment is a byob. We drove over an hour to find out there is no parking in the back of the building as told by an employee who answered the phone. After driving around looking for this parking for 15 minutes we decided to park in a near by deck. We were running out of time to meet our 6:00 pm reservation slot. Didn’t want to be late and risk cancellation and being charged $20 p.p. on my cc. We arrived to find that our table was maybe 12 feet from the front door. The seating arrangement was awkward. Every time that front door opened we felt every bit of the cold from outside. (This is a recommendation put a divider up at least so your patrons can feel comfortable and not have to wear a winter coat indoors while eating.). We requested another table . There were a few empty ones available at the time. We were told no and that we could order our food to go if we’d like. Iv’e been to 5 star restaurants and chicken shacks and never have been treated in this manner. Honestly if it wasn’t for the cancellation policy we would of left. In this economy no one can throw away money and not receive anything in return. Because this establishment was byob we bought a bottle of bourbon to pour into the house made sweet tea. That didn’t happen because we were told you can only have beer or wine which was fine. The issue with this was our bourbon was confiscated as if we couldn’t be trusted as adults to the right thing and not open the bottle. We ordered a full course meal. Appetizers, entrees and desserts. The Cornbread was heavenly by itself and the strawberry jam was amazing. Fried Okra lack luster it was too oily. Deviled eggs was a hit. The entrees we all enjoyed. The Smothered Turkey wings were outstanding and the dressing was full of flavor. The Collard greens were tasty. I ordered a side of Mac and cheese that’s was average. My friend had the lasagna it was enough for 2 servings and she loved it. My sister said the salmon cakes were well seasoned and grits were cooked to perfection. Dessert was excellent the banana pudding was amazing and the sweet potato pie was average. The peach cobbler tea was ok. We came here with positive energy looking to have an amazing time while supporting Black owned business. I also wanted to impress my out of town guest with a wonderful experience . Overall the food was 5 stars and the service was a 3 only because the waitress was nice. The manager had a nasty disposition and was very dismissive. Hopefully the merchant will read this review and make the necessary adjustments and this place could be 5 stars. If you are looking for amazing southern cuisine this is the spot just please make sure it’s take out only. Compliments to the chef.

This was my first time at this establishment and what started off as positive expectations were quickly diminished with lack luster. While I understand not completely changing a meal for a substitution, I was a little thrown off with the no substitutions for any dish on the menu whatsoever. After this our food was ordered and eventually my friends ate their meals. During the entire wait for our food, our waiter never checked on us. My friend did make a comment that the service could be better especially given it wasn’t busy. We later proceeded to order dessert which took quite some time to come out. We arrived 6/26/22 (it wasn’t busy the entire time we were there) at 2pm and probably ordered our meal around 2:10 so our meals came out around 3pm. My friend ordered the catfish(pictured below) and did say she liked it. I do understand the different dishes have to be made the time wait was a little long given we went at a good time and it wasn’t crowded. I also happened to notice that the groups around us who were 2 people or less also didn’t receive their food until after even though they were seated way before us. Ordering dessert we asked for 1 peach cobbler which I didn’t expect to take forever. Waiting 45 minutes truly left a bad taste in my mouth and we asked to get the check instead. But we were told by our waiter the dessert would be ready in 5 minutes to which it wasn’t and then our waiter seemed to disappear and not want to make eye contact with us. I would’ve easily paid more money to leave without the dessert but felt our waiter was being truthful about the wait only taking 5 more minutes. Truly not the experience I wanted since this was my first time and I probably won’t be back. My friends left unsatisfied and that’s unfortunate since we came in for a celebration. We did try to give the benefit of the doubt but ultimately were left bothered and over it all. I did see the owner pass by several times but was only focused on one party of 4 that came in as it seemed they knew one another. The owner was swift to wipe down their table themselves and mop/sweep the floor. They even brought out the food directly for this party and checked in to make sure they were enjoying their meal. I do wish the same treatment was given to the rest of the customers if not from the owner then maybe from their staff. The live music also was too loud at times I couldn’t hear my friends across the table. After having to wait almost an hour when we received the peach cobbler we asked for the ice cream on the side to which we did not get the request and were given dirty spoons (I can provide proof). I also saw other tables get the same dessert with the ice cream on the side so I know our request could’ve been honored. It was upsetting and I wish I could’ve left with a better experience. I hope the establishment does better with their customers.

We came here for the first time today to celebrate my husband's birthday. We were looking for that soul food cuisine because that's Hubbys faaaave food and so I searched it on google and out of everything that was listed, this one stood out. We always go to a spot we found in Trenton years back, but I was determined to find something closer to home .... and booooyyy did we find a gem tonight! Finally!!!!! First, the decor and theme they had in here. Black, blue and gold, just spoke pure elegance. Really beautiful place to take photos. Black ceiling, powder blue walls, royal blue and gold everywhere... wow just wow. Just an overall beauty! We had the corn bread appetizer and it came with a little strawberry butter surprise ... that can easily be a dessert, too. We have had plenty of corn bread throughout the years and this is now by far the BEST CORNBREAD I've ever had. Made to perfection. Moist and buttery deliciousness, you neeeeed to try it for yourself, seriously. I had the Crispy Catfish with Potato Wedges and their House Salad, Husband had the Grilled Salmon with Sweet Potato Collard Greens, Cornbread Stuffing and their Mac n Cheese, and my Brother had the Fried Chicken with Collard Greens and Baked Sweet Potato. Every single bite of everything we had was so delightful, packed with flavor and super fresh! They really make their food with a lot of love. You can tell. Juicy, tender and just mouthwatering goodness. It wa a BYOB spot so for their drinks they had lemonade mocktails, but I decided to try their sweet tea while my family had their liquor. It was so refreshing I wish I had space in my stomach to guzzle down more than one glass of their sweet tea. yuuuuum yum yum! Service - We had a super sweet server, and it was also her birthday recently so Happy Birthday again Jayla! She was awesome, explained everything to us regarding the BYOB, cake service and gratuity, which I already knew from reading it on the website, but great customer service so some customers aren't surprised at the end. She was very attentive even though they were pretty busy for a Monday night. Beautiful smile and great energy!! The one thing I can suggest, before taking the cake out or dessert for any celebration, the table should be cleared of the extra plates and cups that couldve been taken away for better pictures, but that won't take a star from our experience. We loved everything about Sweet T's and we will certainly be back with more family and friends! Worth every penny! 10/10 Highly Recommend!

Let's start by saying know where you're eating. This place is awesome. It's a healthier version to Southern soul food. You're on your own for free street parking. On a Sunday night parking wasn't an issue. Staff is very friendly and the place has a good vibe, not too loud. We had reservations because it was an hour away and wanted to seal a spot. It was busy, but there were several open tables. We had the corn bread with strawberry butter---I could eat the butter on it's own, it was SO good-sweet and smooth. The cornbread was your average corn bread, not dried out, and had that crisp taste, along with the butter, let's just say I didn't wanna share but I did. We had fried wings, they were delightful, but needed sauce (which we dipped it in Buffalo sauce). Breading was a tad on the bland side, but so crispy and juicy meat, dip it in sauce and you're good!! Dinner: shrimp and grits w/turkey sausage- this was SO SO good--possible the best pick of the night (besides that darn good butter). My picky husband even loved the turkey sausage catfish w/collard greens and potato salad-this was delicious, but not crispy catfish. The catfish was moist, but seemed baked and not fried---which it was really good, but don't expect crispy. My husband asked for tarter sauce but it never came so he dipped it in hot suace. Potato salad was heavy on the mustard. Collard greens was with smoked turkey, but really good IMO. Chicken and waffles---it was fried wings (large wings) on waffles. Both were very good, but wings are difficult to enjoy w/waffles. It was doable, but I prefer chicken that's easier to cut through---it didn't stop me from loving it, I just ate the chicken with my hands, like a savage. And enjoyed every minute of it We will be returning to try their other items we wanted to try. Just really good food, really nice staff and a little healthier than most.
