Began with "Pork Belly Burnt Ends" as my starter. With a mix of savory and spiced flavors, this combination surprised me as one of my favorite starters.
Choice of meats were dark meat chicken, pork ribs and sausage along with the sides of potato salad and mac and cheese.
When I got my order I received everything correctly, except for the mac and cheese, instead I got beans. However, when I brought this up, Jolene was more than willing to let me keep the beans and offered to get me mac and cheese too. Sadly, knowing my stomach, I knew I had to decline. Jolene was very kind about it and unlike other servers in other places, she was willing to accommodate me, which really set her apart from other servers in past restraunts.
Pork ribs were astounding, tender, savory and no real need for the original BBQ sauce I asked for, truly a sign of great BBQ. The chicken was tender and carried a smoked flavor to it, truly felt like I was visiting a family's BBQ.
Now for the beans and the potato salad. What makes them shine for me is how you can taste a difference between East Gate's beans and potato salad when trying to compare them to anything else. The sides I ate dared to be different in flavor profile and they still hit their mark. This indicated that East Gate BBQ liked to step out of the box in flavor.
Now sadly the streak they were on hit a bit of a bump, once I tried their sausage. The sausage was slightly chard which I took as a good sign cause that's how I like it but even in plain view, the individually sliced pieces of sausage had a dry look to them. For the sake of review I tried it anyways, and found that the sausage was indeed dry. I brought this to the attention of Jolene and this woman amazed me by offering a fresher batch of sausage as she took kindly to the criticism.
When the fresh batch came, sadly the sausage didn't seem to impress though. The fresh batch wasn't dry, that wasn't the issue anymore, but the flavor was lacking in my opinion and was better with BBQ sauce.
Now for the dessert (Bread Pudding) When served it was steaming hot and ready to eat. It was two scoops of bread pudding with rum sauce on top, sliced apple inside the pudding and whole walnuts. (Not sure if the apples were freshly sliced.) The dessert was satisfying, I just wish I didn't eat so much beforehand.
The presentation was lacking in what it was served on but the dessert itself was absolutely delicious. Wasn't too sweet, wasn't underwhelming either. In my opinion, it was a dessert with balance. I couldn't get enough of the rum sauce, I started scraping what I could with my silverware. Walnuts and slices of apple was also a different take to bread pudding that I had never seen before and I loved it! This different approach was impressive.
Overall, this place was exquisite, they served delicious food cooked to perfection. They're a restaurant that dares to be different, creating food from scratch and by what I tasted in my order, they didn't disappoint. Sausage was the only shortcoming, but if we are talking about the overall experience and food. I'd say they knocked it out of the park. Service, food, sports on TV, relaxed atmosphere and music all came together beautifully. I will definitely go back and try their brisket and mac in the near future or try their oysters, one of these weekends. Two thumbs up to East Gate BBQ!
And if you are in the mood for great BBQ and hospitality, go to East Gate just be sure to ask for Jolene.
My second visit I ordered Brisket, Pulled Pork and Mac and Cheese.
My visit wasn't as good as the first. Judging as a Houston Texan, the brisket was dry and wasn't seasoned well (I couldn't finish) and the pulled pork was edible but I've had better (Could finish).
The Mac and Cheese was the best Mac and Cheese I've EVER had but it wasn't enough to carry the order I made.
Seems what you order determines the experience. I'm gonna try a burger to decide if the 4 star rating is still valid.
Tried the burger (medium) and that baby was juicy and one of the best burgers I've ever had at any...
Read moreIt was supposed to be a pulled pork sandwich, but it was small slices, not pulled, and there was way too much sauce. There was more sauce dripping from there than anything else. The burger was literally swimming in sauce, which was a ridiculously sloppy mess. I think the black chicken should have been steamed and then smoked. In addition to being cooked enough, the charred chicken skin that I expected did not appear. My husband has been insisting that he must eat it when he comes to Morgan City for seven years. When he came with his boss before, I had a good taste in my memory, but I was disappointed. I tried to make it look better in the photos, but the food speaks for itself. Only the pork belly meat is up to par. I am willing to go back. Come here once and order a completely different meal to see if it is as good as the reviews. Boss, please, find reasons, don’t make excuses, you can do better,Boss, to be more precise, there is nothing wrong with the waiter. It is your recipe or the food is not delicious enough. It is the source of the problem. The BBQ-flavored roasted whole chicken I bought in the deli section of the supermarket opposite you is more delicious than yours. , you just smear Tabasco hot sauce on the chicken skin, and the chicken is cooked. We took the endless pulled pork burger home and opened it to see that it was chopped into dices. You can't pull out the pork pieces. Tell me you have a Texas taste. Foodies in New Orleans have very picky mouths.,I'm so sorry to telling...
Read moreOk, I can leave a review whenever I want. Just because I didn't have time to do it right then and there doesn't mean anything. No, I did not call y'all and discuss issues. What would've been the point if this was the way I would've been treated anyways? You're blaming waitr, and not taking any of the blame. Hmmmm ok. Update 2... I have receipts. It was the 19th not yesterday. I ordered at 5:15. My food was not delivered until 6:45 Update.. Yes it was delivered by waiter, but it took y'all over an hour and a half to make my food. I know the person who picked up my food. She messaged me when it came through on her app. She delivered it to me within 10 minutes of picking it up. IT WAS COLD. Like y'all cooked it and let it sit. Y'all forgot to give her my tea and ranch dressing. She had to go back for them. Had food delivered. Took almost 2 hours to get it. When I got it...
