Pits and Scores. Overcooked coconut shrimpâchewy, exterior slightly burned. Maybe worth $8.00 but not $15.00. The sauce was way too spicy! I was overwhelmed to the point where I had to stop eating the sauce. I am a chili lover from an Hispanic family who was raised on spice however this sauce was not to be expected at an Italian restaurant. I ordered the Greek Salmon. I picked out about a third of the Romaine lettuce and set it aside on a separate plate as these were colorless, tasteless Romaine ribs. Our waitress understood immediately without me uttering a word. She replaced it with a bowl of greener leaves with additional olives, artichoke hearts, etc. One of the olives had a pit All other olives did not. I pointed this out the manager who explained âwe donât check our food before sending it outâŚthatâs the way we get them.â Thatâs not to say that the Rosemary rolls werenât absolutely delicious: warm, tender on the inside and just a slight bit of crispy crust partnered with extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Despite the food, our waitress, Viviana, and servers were great: prompt, courteous, and on top of their game: water, bread, etc. were there within a few minutes of seating. Thereâs something to be said about Mama Mia and perhaps it is more about the manager than about the 4+ ratings. For one, the manager on this Sunday evening (November 12) was very consumed with the football game playing on the big screens. I assumed he felt guilty as he was folding dinner napkins while watching the football game. On the other hand, he didnât appear to follow up with the kitchen after my waitress relayed my concerns. He certainly lacked what I expected from a manager and that is to say doing his due diligence. I think his defensive remark about the pit says it all. I am not a critic or food snob and I donât particularly care to go into someoneâs neighborhood and bash a local favorite eatery. But the prawn appetizer and salmon salad entree are not worth the $38.00 that I shelled out. Managerâs attitude made an unsatisfying experience only worse by impressing upon me his disregard for what comes out of the kitchen compared to his greater regard for what he...
Read moreWe are regulars at Mama Mia, or a lest we were. The waiter was great, he was attentive, he was personable. We ordered a nicer bottle of wine ($49.95) off the menu, they were out. We were offered 2 alternatives being told they were the same price, chose the 2004 Markham Merlot ($49.95) over the 2010 Stags Leap Cabernet . When the Markham came it was clearly bad so we returned it and chose the Stags Leap, it tasted great.. Salad was good, food was good, conversation was good, nice night sitting outside. When the bill came I saw the price of the Stags Leap was at $49.95 which was expected, our food was all correct but there was an additional charge of $30. I figured they made a simple mistake and added a corkage fee and asked to have it reversed. Major discussions took place as I was informed that the price of the wine was actually $79.95, hence the $30 add. Well, the General manager came out and explained to us that they were not going to absorb the $30, we were taking home at $79 bottle (we only consumed half the bottle) and were accountable for it. I told her to keep the half bottle and refund the $30. We were amazed at the lack of customer obsession, we were amazed at the argumentative attitude, must have been a power trip for the new GM. The few times in the past we've ever had a bad bottle the wine was completely compensated or an upgrade was provided with the difference being taken by the restaurant all due to the inconvenience. Sorry to say but the new management has lots to learn, immature and lacks any understanding of the customer experience. We'll be dining elsewhere...
Read moreI am a regular at the Gilroy Mama Mia's. I have dinner there on a weekly basis. Again, this review is for the Gilroy restaurant, not the Morgan Hill restaurant. There are a few of the servers / staff that are loud, rude, and out of line on a regular basis. Heidi is a server who says inappropriate comments each time we are there about the customers. She will complain about what they are ordering, how long they are staying, how low their tips are, etc. She complains about how slow the night is going and "....can't we all just hurry up and eat." There have been several bartenders who drink behind the bar and serve cook and other staff members. It is completely inappropriate. We see the owner in the restaurant about once a month or so. He may be in more often but we only see him about once every 4-6 weeks. He sits at the end of the bar and works on his laptop - completely oblivious to how his staff is behaving. It has gotten to the point where we are uncomfortable with Heidi's comments and may have to find another place to dine. There appears to be a manager on site but he is either participating with the bad behavior, flirting with the hostess, or serving customers and not noticing.
The owner either needs to spend more time in the restaurant or hire a manager that can keep the staff in line and bring back the professionalism and...
