I'm sharing this review after initial skepticism about the mixed-to-negative feedback, thinking it might’ve just been the area's high-strungness. However, I now agree with some of the criticisms.
As a frequent visitor to Tatte in Boston during undergrad and while passing through, I was thrilled to hear about their expansion into New Jersey, with Morristown following the Ridgewood location; Ridgewood seems to have slightly better service (3.8 out of 5.0, as of writing) compared to Morristown (3.3 out of 5.0), possibly due to having more time to iron out issues.
Cleanliness is a bit of a problem here. I noticed at least six tabletops with crumbs from the previous day (Monday into Tuesday) at the spot I chose. The issue persisted, though less so, the next day (today; from Tuesday into Wednesday). I haven’t seen staff cleaning tables with rags and disinfectant spray, though they do clear the dishes that guests are supposed to bus themselves (to the bin near the espresso station / far-most doors). Ultimately, however, having worked in cafés and restaurants, I really can’t overlook this aspect of basic sanitation and respect for guests.
The space also feels less suited for solo work. Outlets are a bit limited, and the setup seems geared toward groups. In other words, compared to the Boston locations I frequented, this definitely feels less accommodating for independent dining or working.
On the service front, there are very kind girls at the pastry counter, one being Emily, who have been nothing but helpful. However, one Sunday morning, arriving sometime around 8:45ish, I encountered a line wrapping around the counter, to the midpoint of the other side.
I recommend the morning bun, though today’s was dry—a first for me. The lattes I’ve had have been good. However, I’ve only tried smaller bites here, not full sit-down service yet. I love the mint lemonade, which comes bottled if you’re in a rush.
I’m rating this location 3.5 out of 5.0 overall, rounding to 4.0. I’d hate to give a new business a 3.0, but it admittedly does fall a bit short of expectations. I enjoy Tatte’s food and beverage, but the experience of sticking around in Morristown has knocked off a star; I’d’ve honestly preferred it somewhere cozier like Summit, in the same air as Ridgewood. Had I written this a week ago, it would’ve been a 5.0 as I hadn’t yet noticed issues. Going early in the day, I’ve also entirely avoided inventory shortages that others have mentioned.
Overall, it seems that staff training could be more thorough, and many appear to be learning in live-time. I hope Morristown can adopt whatever is working at Ridgewood to improve. This place has 5-star potential, and I’ll be sure to update my review if things get better.
For now, however, I’m less inclined to do work / dine here when I have to clean my own table. Or where businesswomen have public meltdowns over their online orders not being ready.
EDIT: Knocking off one star to make it three now. Returned to this Tatte not too long ago to have multiple staff members try to give me food and beverage that wasn't mine. Someone — who I can only assume bears a leadership role here — noticed this, and simply remarked "That's so funny," and then went back to his laptop. What??
I will likely stick to picking things up from here, as opposed to sitting down, should I...
Read moreOne more time… what’s the hype about this place? After a bad experience at the Ridgewood location, I decided to give Tatte in Morristown a chance. With all the glowing reviews and people swearing by it, I wanted to see if the hype was real. It’s not! I can’t help but wonder if part of the hype is fueled by influencer marketing. Here’s what I ordered: Breakfast croissant, Macchiato, Dessert with nuts that looked amazing but wasn’t, Drip coffee to test quality. My friend ordered the avocado toast and a pistachio latte. The bill? $65, ridiculously expensive for what we got. The breakfast croissant was disappointing: a mountain of arugula, a thin slice of cheese, and egg. The egg was cooked fine, but the flavor was buried under arugula. The tomato slice had no flavor at all. The dessert? All looks, no substance, not fresh, not crunchy, overly sweet, and tasted like it had been frozen. The avocado toast might as well have been called “arugula toast” with some avocado. The bread wasn’t fresh and was dry, though the poached eggs were okay. The drip coffee was drinkable but far from specialty quality. At least it was warm, unlike Ridgewood. The macchiato wasn’t a macchiato, more like a cold, flat cortado. The pistachio latte was slightly better, but the pistachio paste completely overpowered the coffee. Yes, some people love the interior, but to me it felt like sitting in an airport terminal coffee shop, impersonal and sterile. Overall, Tatte feels like a chain that relies on slick marketing and influencer hype rather than delivering good food and coffee. Both Ridgewood and Morristown had the same issues: overpriced, bad food, terrible coffee and poor management. I don’t...
Read moreDisgusting food. I ordered the hot pumpkin latte, it took them 35 minutes to bring it, by the time that they brought it was cold, who knows how long was just sitting there. Food took almost 45-50 minutes to come out, I ordered the eggs with bacon and latkes platter, the eggs were iced cold as if they were made and put in the fridge, bacon tasted like bad meat, and whatever herbs or nuts were in the latkes was very badly combined, flavors did not complimenteach other, it was just nasty. My friend got the French toast, it looked so beautiful and we're like at least that looks good, when we both tried it it tasted like expired cheese. It was so bad I had to spit it out. The table that we were sitting at had direct view of the window where they put the food out and both me and my friend saw a lady which we assume was the manager, rearrange the food already placed on the plates with her BARE HANDS. No gloves on or anything. Just touching everyone's food with her hands. All we were able to eat was the sourdough toast. When we asked for a little bit more toast cause nothing else was eatable, they gave us attitude. We asked for a baby high chair for my friends toddler when we got in, my fiend was holding the toddler in her arms to keep her entertained while we waited for 50 minutes for terrible food and was gonna put the toddler on the chair when the food was out so she could eat, one of the waitresses came to take the chair cause we weren't using it "at the moment ", turns out they only had 2 high chairs for the whole place and a bunch of people were complaining about it. If I could give zero stars I would. Do not go there, it is not worth the money or time....
