Inscription reads: "The Alliance" -- Lafayette, Hamilton [chief aide], and Washington. Inscription: "General Washington and Colonel Hamilton are advised at Morristown by the Marquis de Lafayette that the French are coming to support the American cause. May 10, 1780." -- Morristown Green Morristown, NJ -- "Where America survived!" After the harshest winter (1779-80) in American history, worse than Valley Forge, PA (1777-8), Washington clutches a pivotal letter from King Louis 16th. Lafayette later wrote, "Washington's eyes filled with tears of joy...certain proof of a truly paternal love." Note: I have elsewhere determined that Washington's height was 6 feet 2 and 3/4 inches. Given that Hamilton was 5 feet 7 inches tall, I used this and other Morristown Green photos, as well as portraits of Washington and Lafayette to determine that Lafayette was 5 feet 11 inches tall.
