After today, I don't think I, or anyone else who was in Ken's, will ever be back.
I used to love Ken's but it is a bit out of the way so I don't go often. My order was the same every time - 2 plain hotdogs (great leftover) and a full cheesehead (their grilled cheese). The bread was toasty and crisp, the cheese fresh and melty and the hotdogs tasty. I also always got it without all the sides, something that apparently cannot be done now. I turned a lot of people to Ken's over the last 2 years...no more.
Today I go in and there was clearly some remodeling done. One man was in line and had just ordered (more on this later) and there was only one man working the whole store. A lady was in the back but she did not come out til the end. It took about 8 min for this man's sandwhich to come out. He leaves, and I order my items. First sign this was going to be bad - the man working did not know what the cheesehead was (it's on the menu). I then tell him what it is, and show him the approx size with my hands. He goes "oh no that bread is half that size"...so the sandwhiches are only half sandwiches now? I say fine, I'll order 2 (mind you I just agreed to pay $12 for a grilled cheese sandwhich - they used to be worth it!).
Second sign that things were going wrong - it took 15 min for a grilled cheese and 2 plain hotdogs.
While I was waiting another woman got in line, and after her 2 men. Another lady had one item she wanted to checkout with. All waiting patiently. Right as he finishes up my order, the man who was in front of me earlier comes back in irate - he ordered the cowboy which has roast beef. His sandwhich was all turkey! So he now has to fix this man's sandwhich - doesn't even ring the lady with one item out! She proceeded to put her item down and angrily walk out. The lady who was waiting after me decided she had had enough as well and left, and the men left. It was....awful. No communication!
But I figured ok, I have my stuff, I'll head out. But I decided to take a bit of that hot crispy grilled cheese before driving home...I open up the wrapped to cold bread and just a hunk of cold slices of cheese. I just waited over 20 min total for 2 plain hotdogs and cold cheese on cold bread. I couldn't. So I walk in (other man is still waiting on his new sandwhich) and the lady is at the counter. I show her the sandwhich which she admits is NOT how it's supposed to be. The man who messed it up then proceeds to take it in the back and MICROWAVE IT. You know what happens to bread in the microwave? Not awesome things, that's what. The lady proceeds to go to the register but admits she doesn't know how to use it well enough to refund me, and offers me a slice of cake instead. I don't want cake...I don't even care about the money, I just want a grilled freaking cheese.
I left after getting my nuked meal and tried to enjoy the greesy, chewy mess that was now my sandwhich. I don't know who is running this place now, but I hope you fix this. Train your employees so they know how to make the items on the menu (or at least have HEARD of the items on the menu). I have loved Ken's and today....today made it so I never want to return. Here's to hoping these hotdogs are salvagable for my very...
Read moreOkay, so these guys do a Reuben sandwich as good as anyone and better than most. I got a generous amount of pastrami with just the right amount of kraut and Russian dressing. The marble rye stood up to the kraut and dressing without turning to mush (I hate that). You get some chips and a serving of macaroni salad, which also was very good.
Friday is creampuff Friday (who knew?) And I must say it was one of the best creampuffs I have ever had. Absolutely worth the few extra bucks.
I am looking forward to going back and trying the other menu items and the Amish preserves from their little market.
The out door seating is great. Mostly two tops. The parking is in the rear, but there is a public parking lot within 50 feet of the restaurant in case you go zipping past the entrance to their...
Read moreThe service has failed the quality of food. This place was paradise with tablecloths, napkins, unique glasses and great food. Now you line up, pay first, get paper napkins on bare tables with plastic and styrofoam glasses and cups. It's like going to Dairy Queen, take a number and get served when they can get to you. We had ten people and the first ones to order were finished eating by the time the last ones were getting their food. Bad mistake....you lost ten customers in 1 hour. So sorry. This used to be a great place, with great food. What is...
