My spouse and I decided to try Gala after our favorite spot in West Ashley closed. We went to Kaminsky's West Ashley every week and were so heartbroken when it recently closed. We read about Gala, and their menu includes a brownie sundae, which was our weekly treat at Kaminsky's. So we decided to drive over to Mt.Pleasant to Gala. When we entered the space, we were finally met with a half-hearted greeting. I ordered the brownie sundae and was so looking forward to a good experience. A few seconds later the server returned and said, "there is no ice cream." This was about 130 in the afternoon. The server asked if we wanted anything else, and he seemed so nonchalant about it. Needless to say we will not be returning. It is inconceivable to me that a place advertising desserts would not immediately remedy the shortage of vanilla ice cream, such a basic item. Had no one checked earlier in the day? Did it just not matter? To make matters even worse, the server told us we could go to the pharmacy if we wanted ice cream. Really? What we were looking for was an experience in a space with some ambiance and with service grounded in joy and the desire to please the customer. We found none of this. I hope management at Gala will address their customer service as well as their necessary provision of goods as advertised. So if you are craving something particular that is advertised at Gala, you might want to call ahead, especially before you drive any distance. I...
Read moreOrdered a Black Forest cake for my husband’s birthday, which I do every year. This year we decided to get one from Gala. This used to be a favorite spot of ours when it was located in WA. The girl that helped me placed the order was very friendly and kind. She even brought it out to me because I had my infant twins in the car with me. When we opened the cake up after dinner, my husband was so disappointed. The cake was covered in chocolate buttercream, not whipped cream with cherries on top. The cake was okay, but my husband hates buttercream. I called the next morning to confirm I ordered a Black Forest cake. The baker told me that there are many variations of that cake and was sorry it was not what we expected. I was also told that if I wanted something specific, that I needed to request specific things next time—this cake was also $62 for a 6inch layered cake. In all the years my husband has had this cake for his birthday, not once has it been different than chocolate cake with cherries and whipped cream. Just disappointed in the response that I was given by the baker. We unfortunately will not...
Read moreI called Gala on short notice to see if they could do my gender reveal cake. I called many places and had a handful who could make it work, but I chose Gala because I loved coming here.
I sent an email requesting if they can’t do the first design, then a simple white cake with black writing would work.
I ended up with the cake photographed and when calling to express my dissatisfaction, the owner, Jackie reprimanded me saying she designed it herself, everyone else thought it was “cute” and I should be grateful for having her do it on such short notice.
Regardless of me asking for my own design (and paying $67 for the cake), the owner took matters into her own hands and designed what she thought looked good. She originally said I could bring it back for a redesign, but in the same breath said she couldn’t believe how ungrateful I was and can just bring it back for a refund. I thanked her for ruining my plans for such a special event as a first time mother and was shocked by her insensitivity.
The staff was wonderful, but I will not be returning and would not recommend this place to family...
