We stayed the first week of May. This place was nice but certainly wasn’t worth the price. First of all my room was called the Royall Suite. A suite is more than one room. This was NOT a suite. This was nothing more than a normal room, without some expected amenities. I expected a mini fridge and microwave in there. (To be fair those were not advertised, but I still expected them.) Virtually every time I stay anywhere, it has that, especially at that price point and for a “suite.”
What is severely disappointing is the awful “breakfast” that was served. It was the same thing that was given every day. I don’t think it’s safe or sanitary to leave out eggs for hours on end, not to mention they tasted terrible. Daily breakfast is advertised. I was not expecting cold food each day. Considering it’s with a restaurant, I expected much much more. The pastries were ok, but they weren’t restocked at all. One morning I didn't even get one
The blinds in the room do nothing to block out the light. I was awake at sunrise every morning because the sun was bright in my room. The drapes were paper thin and didn’t help either. It’s not too much to ask to be able to have a dark room to sleep in.
I get that the house is old, but the creaking was really loud. If I got up in the night, or my wife got up, it was impossible not to make the floor creak.
The bathtub shower could use a new faucet. It was very confusing/frustrating to work. Both the hot and cold work in a continuous circle, very difficult to get it to stop dripping. The water pressure is not very good either.
I was there for 4 nights. I woke up early each day since it was so bright in my room. By night 4 I was quite tired. I tried to go to sleep at 10:00. But below me there was a lot of noise being made. I’d start to nod off and then I’d hear banging. Finally after 45 minutes of this I went downstairs to see what the problem was, they were moving furniture! I guess the wedding the next day was more important than me getting to bed at a decent hour.
Saturday morning I was awakened by the housekeeper making noise in the hall. It was a little later, it was after 8am. But still...the workers should be conscious about making noise at early and late hours.
It wasn’t all bad. The room was quaint, which was what I was looking for. The bed was very comfortable. I also was very pleased that the AC worked well, which isn’t always the case in many hotels. I also liked that there was a ceiling fan. I need a fan to sleep, and bring my own. I didn’t have to take it out because of the ceiling fan.
When I checked out, no one asked me how my experience was or I certainly would have let them know. Also I emailed these things to them after my stay, never got a response, if I had, I probably would not have left a poor review for them. That shows a lack care about their patrons.
Maybe the Inn is just extra and the real business is...
Read moreWe stayed at the Inn after finding it in a web search for B&Bs in the Charleston area. I thought it would be an eclectic place to stay, which it was. For those writing / reading reviews here about the fine restaurant, did you know they have 6 guest rooms upstairs?
It seems that the attitude of the staff is, "Hey, bud, we're a restaurant that happens to have some rooms above it." You're selling sleep for $200 a night. That's almost pure profit. Maybe you could make the Inn guests feel a little more appreciated. The Sunday brunch in the restaurant was excellent, though you may want to consider making it available to Inn patrons earlier, as they are tourists on weekends who will want to get out into the City. Food, presentation, service, all top notch in the restaurant.
The continental breakfast Monday morning was thoroughly underwhelming. The young man preparing it said, "We only have 3 rooms rented, and usually only 2 of 3 come down for breakfast, so we don't put much out". Hello? $200 a night.
Overall, we loved the charm of the Inn and the neighborhood. The staff were friendly enough when approached, but looked at us like, "why are these people walking around in our restaurant?"
We stayed for our 25th anniversary. I appreciate that the manager took delivery of flowers for my wife and arranged them in a vase in our room prior to our arrival.
The reservation website asks about dietary restrictions. Why? I noted on the reservation that my wife does not eat gluten, but no effort was made to obtain any specifically gluten-free products. So why ask?
We stayed on the top floor. Room was nice, if small. Bed was good. Pillows were old and flat, need to be replaced. There were some stains on linens and curtains. A little more care and upkeep would be good. The room was made up and cleaned very well, by an invisible housekeeper. It did overlook the back of the property, and the restaurant staff could be noisy when taking their smoke breaks out there late night.
I might stay there again, as it was a great base from which to explore the...
Read moreBy far and away the overall best dining experience we have had in Charleston.
The service was spectacular, on par with places I have been like Commader’s Palace in NO, Highland’s Bar & Grill in Birmingham, and Bolud Sud in New York… the three that immediately come to mind. Extremely well-trained, attentive and polite.
The ambience was somewhere between a NE coastal inn and a French brassiere, really unique and fun.
The menu was also akin to a brassiere with local flourishes. We started with the smoked fish dip, which we all agreed was superlative. Also, don’t not get the cornbread because you don’t want to pay $11 for cornbread. It is easily the best I have had in my life, easily, and made me angry I probably wont be able replicate it at the house.
Three of us had the steak frites, which were perfectly prepared, as were the fries. It sure tasted like they fried them in duck fat even if they didn’t. Although some reviews have taken issue with the size of this particular entree, the servings were more than sufficient for all of us at the table. This isn’t a Golden Corral after all.
One of our party ordered the burger, and the first words out of their mouth were “oh, my God.” They let the person next to them have a bite, and they immediately said the same thing. Both said it was the best burger they have had in a restaurant.
The remaining diner ordered the squid ink pasta. They loved it, and started stealing French fries from other plates to sop up the sauce. I thought I had raised her better than that…and told her so. Apparently, it was also delicious.
We closed the meal with the orange/mango sorbet and an oatmeal raisin cookie (comp) for the birthday celebrant at the table. Both were very, very good.
From start to finish, it was a perfect dining experience....
