What a hidden gem!!! Can't believe we didn't get introduced to this place sooner. (Our friends discovered this place and treated us.) As the name of the place says Jib-Bop ( 집밥) which means "Home Rice(food)" , you can taste the loving care and effort the owner puts into her food, like my mother (who is Korean) would cook.
Maya grows herbs and Korean veggies in her garden and is very seasonal, which is typical in Korean cooking. The Dandelion kimchi ,that is in season, was on point and love that the owner doesn't use a lot of additives and MSG to enhance her flavors, but rather highlight the ingredients through proper seasoning and fermentation. All the banchan (side dishes) are made in house, too including all the array of kimchis. The LA Gal-Bi is to die for, especially if you are new to Korean food, and is very palatable even if you are not an adventurous eater. Japchae had the correct texture, consistency, and flavor, and was very impressed. Aside from the staples, Maya adds cold noodle dishes during the summer months, and adds hot soup during winter months. A set of banchan is $7 and is no refills, which rightfully so when the owner is making every single item from scratch. Please do not waste and only order what you could finish. Think it's safe for me to say, being born and raised in S. Korea to a Korean mother and an African American Father (I'm a military brat) and been searching endlessly to find a decent Korean place, ever since moving to the United States, that this place is by far the best Korean Food I have had in the Midwest. Can't wait until my sister comes visit so I could take her the to Jip-Bop. A must try. I have found my new favorite...
Read moreWe had such a wonderful experience at Jib-Bob. From the moment we walked in, the cozy atmosphere and thoughtful décor stood out, I believe many of the pieces were created by the owner herself, who once ran an art studio in South Korea, which gives the space a unique and personal touch.
We ordered the Dak Gal-Bee (#2) and Kimchi Boak-Geum-Bob (#6), along with green tea and jujube tea. Everything was delicious, but the jujube tea in particular was prepared so beautifully that it made me want to learn how to make it myself. The flavors felt authentic, comforting, and clearly made with care.
Service was exceptional, the owner checked on us often and made us feel so welcome, something that really sets Jib-Bob apart from larger restaurants. Portion sizes were generous, and the value was fantastic; we paid under $50 for two people and left full and happy.
This is the kind of place I’d recommend to anyone, whether for a casual meal or something special. Just note that larger groups should call ahead, as the restaurant is cozy, but the owner is flexible and will even open on closed days for groups.
Overall, it’s hard to single out just one highlight because everything, the food, the service, the atmosphere, comes...
Read moreWe were really looking forward to trying this, based on 4.9 review rating and others write ups. Couldnt have been more disappointed. Atmosphere was take out joint quality, although it was clean. Took a long time to get drinks, which were canned sodas and an "iced" coffee, which came in a soft drink glass and was hot! Asked for an iced coffee, they took it back, put some ice in it, and gave it back. $9. Now its luke warm coffee. Appetizers were placed on table, no explanation of what they were. Mostly potato and kimchi based. They were ok. Still no drinks. Finally got our meals, except one, which we had to remind them of what was ordered. It came out with squid instead of shrimp. Sent back. It finally came out after everyone else was finished. Nothing inspiring about any of the dishes, all 4 of us were completely underwhelmed. Owner never visited table, no discount on wrong coffee, or late meal. Waitress seemed as though it was her first day? How this place has a 4.9 rating is absolutely beyond comprehension. Will not return...
