Locals Sushi & Sports Pub - Mt Pleasant — Restaurant in Mount Pleasant

It's a sad day for us. We have been enjoying Locals Monday night for roughly 10 years as a family for birthdays, wedding anniversaries, and date nights.

This week (4/17/2023) my wife, daughter in law, stepson, and I started to put our order in. As usual my wife modifies her order to be less spicy and my stepson orders his favorite roll without asparagus. The waitress tells us they have a new policy, NO ORDER MODICATIONS. We ask to speak to the manager. The manager arrives at the table and we discuss. She says they have had this policy for a month and "we've found it works quite well. The kitchen production has really increased. They are too "busy" to handle special orders."(see pic 4) We asked if this new policy is posted because it isn't on the menu (see attached pic 2 and 3). She said it is posted on the front door (see pic 1). We were shocked. It's pretty standard service for sushi anywhere that they will prepare it how ever you like "fresh" not premade.

To be honest, we have felt the quality of the food and customer service has gone down since Covid began at Locals Mt Pleasant. The food looks bland. The sushi pieces fall apart. The rolls have gotten smaller. We've also had issues with being overcharged on our check. Some of the waitress staff had been rude to us as well when we questioned charges on the check.

To our dismay, When we left on 4/17/2023 we discovered the policy was not posted on the door (see attached pic 1).

To be fair, the waitress was kind enough to comp the cost of our drinks. However, we will not be returning to Locals Mt Pleasant.

Sports bar meet sushi shack meet taco taqueria meets burger bar. It’s an interesting menu concept. I can only speak to the sushi, but the burger I saw looked good.

On the stars - 5 for the food, 1-2 on the vibe and service.

Had some basics to start, miso soup and seaweed salad. Both prepared well, good flavor and seasoning, not over powering. Good portion for the price.

For sushi, we did two rolls, spicy tuna and the Pacific. Also went with the Sashimi App, effectively a Okamase style. All of the rolls were fantastic, fresh, well plated, good portions, overall yummy and satisfying.

The vibe and service, well not much vibe. The outdoor patio is actually a makeshift addition between the restaurant and parking lot/alley. It’s totally enclosed with glass and a roof. Also air conditioned. It’s neither an outdoor patio or a proper expansion. Kind of feels like an arm sewn back on after getting chopped off. May have reconsidered the inside dining.

Either way, it’s crammed, tight, and loud. Kind of like an old college frat party. Probably great for singles mingle, ladies/guys night out, but definitely not a date spot or family place.

Service was uninviting overall, we were seated quickly on a Tuesday, granted it was still fairly busy being the night after half priced sushi. Manager was very responsive after a service issue. Another server lady with nice eye makeup was the only warm personality we encountered.

Will definitely order takeout, but better suited having a picnic or sunset sushi...

I have been coming to this restaurant for over 6 years. If I am in the area it is a must stop. If I am not for a while, I make the trek from Western Summerville because it is that good. They have a beautiful classic designed bar area, a nice dining area, and weather permitting a nice outdoor area. By far, the long term servers and the newly trained ones are the best I have encountered. They rank right up there with some of the best, I have encountered in my travels. There are many places that offer fine sushi and sashimi in the low country. The food here is just that much better, and that says a lot because there is some excellent food at select other Japanese restaurants. The freshness, quality and size is just better. When I combine that with the excellent service and atmosphere this is my go to place always. I also know that other dishes are excellent as well, as my wife usually with pass on sushi to try them. 5 Stars in every category. Only caveat is that not all Locals are the same. I have been to one other than the Mount Pleasant and I will just say the extra drive to Mount Pleasant is the only way to go. I believe they have a 3rd location.
