A friend and I found ourselves in downtown Mount Vernon looking for somewhere to have dinner because the place we had planned to go had closed for the day. We could see a number of options, and then got our phones out to check the Google reviews. We were standing right in front of La Catrina, and even though it looked like a bit of a "hole in the wall," it got pretty good reviews. It wasn't too bad once you got inside, though the lack of atmosphere took it down a star. Since we are both from Arizona, we're pretty familiar with Mexican food, and weren't expecting a lot. We were pleasantly surprised. We each got a couple of the street tacos, carne asada and carnitas for me and bean and veggie for my friend, and all were very good. So were the margaritas in general. I got the house variety, which I enjoyed. My friend tried the flight and wasn't very happy with the strawberry one, but really liked the other two. We then tried what we consider to be the "acid test" for a Mexican restaurant: the chile relleno. Our server, Erik (with a k!) said that it had a light egg batter and was served with a green rather than red sauce, which sounded good to us. We both agreed that it was one of the best we've had in a long time. The frijoles were a little runny for my taste, but my friend found them just right. My friend, who has moved to the area recently, said that she will...
Read moreGoing to be straight up. Went it today, first tike visitor, and was told to select one of the several open tables, so I did.
Waited for 12 ish minutes all while maling eye contact with several waiters walking by. I watched as 3 other families, and individuals came in AFTER me, and were assisted. Drinks and orders were taken from all. Several waiters walked past me several times. It's not as if I mixed in with the crowd since I was the only dark skinned, black person in there and sitting at a table alone. It's wasn't until I gathered my things and was leaving, that I asked a waiter if someone was going to help me, or was I sitting in the wrong section and was just being ignored because they were not busy at all when I came in (they had a whole section roped off, so only half of the seating was being used and even then it wasn't full.) She looked around for another waiter that I'm guessing was assigned to my section, but at this point it wasn't worth waiting.
I walked down to another restaurant, was immediately sat, and assisted with ordering all while operating with one waiter!! Crazy!!
Their menu seemed interesting but I would just make sure they you advocate for yourself and get someone's attention to assist you, otherwise...
Read moreThis might be the worst Mexican restaurant I have visited. First off, the waiter took about 20 minutes to bring my significant other her soda, but forgot to bring my water. This was also after the fact that we had to remind him to bring us our drinks since he had forgotten them. We had arrived a little after 8pm, and it took about 50 minutes to get our poorly cooked food. I ordered the carne asada which was $26. This was pricey for a slice of overly cooked carne and some beans that clearly came from a can and rice. The portion size were terrible for the price and the quality of the food was poor. My significant other also did not enjoy her barely microwaved tortillas that came with her tacos. The alcoholic drinks barely have any alcohol, you’re pretty much ordering a syrup drink. I also finally got my glass of water at the end of our dinner. Pretty much every aspect of this restaurant was pretty bad. Poor service, poor quality food. Save your money and...
