I love the energy of this place. My husband and I have been here a few times and have enjoyed it. We were greeted at the door by a cook (I think). He gave us a big smile and a charming "Come on in". It was 1 pm, not quite lunchtime, the place was packed, but we were lucky to get a booth. FYI, the springs and cushioning in the booth were quite worn out, so they sat low in relation to the table. It didn't bother either of us enough to knock a star off. We may try to sit at a table with chairs next time.
The place is decorated with kids' metal lunchboxes. Some are newer versions, but some are a lot older. I enjoyed them being on display. Otherwise, the decor is plain-jane, homey, and probably in need of some updating. Still not enough to knock a star off.
The staff was prompt, attentive, friendly, and accommodating. Can't ask for much more.
I ordered the roast turkey with cheddar, bacon, and ranch dressing on Ciabatta. I asked for no cheese and onion rings instead of fries. My order came out perfect, and the sandwich was quite tasty. The roll was grilled and crunchy on the edges. The turkey was moist, and the bacon slices were thick and had a lot of flavor. Both my husband and I commented on how good our food was. He had a bacon cheeseburger with fries. He said I wouldn't have liked the fries as he knows how i like them prepared. I didn't order them and had the onion rings instead, which were perfectly adequate. He ate all of his burger and most of his fries, leaving just the smallest pieces on his plate. He commented again on how good lunch was on the way home.

Read moreWent for lunch today with my dad and his wife. I had the French dip (sub pepperjack cheese for Swiss) and onion rings, both were delicious! Also had rootbeer, and was so happy they use that chewable pellet ice, which is my fave! Dad had the turkey cranberry sandwich, not my thing but he really liked it, and the chicken noodle soup, which I tasted and it was quite good. Step mom had the beef & barley soup and onion rings, she said the soup was good. My only little complaint would be it took awhile to take our order and the wait time for our food was a bit long (maybe 20-25 min). Also, I could see parking becoming a real issue at times (prob mostly on the weekends), but we drove around the block a couple times and lucked out when a car pulled out of the 3 hr parallel parking 1 bldg away from the diner, just in the nick of time. I would def visit again next time I'm in the Mount...
Read moreMay be I have been going here to often, too long (yet will not be for a while) because I need to reduce my rating of this diner, it is no doubt "ill advised!" to anticipate continual high quality of any business!
The burger I had today had a charded taste along it's edge and an odd, pland (not bad) taste 🤔 overall. The fries which tend to be abundant and cooked such right, looked over cooked and as if the oil needed to be changed.🙁.
Made even worse by the fact it was served to me by the owner, (apparently he did not notice that it didn't measure up)
It is a quint little cafe in the heart of downtown Mount Vernon. Sadly, it appears to close somewhere between 2:30 and 3pm.
Another attraction of this location, use to be the tables outside, on nice days - one can have a quiet lunch in the open air - yet the last few weeks, the homeless seemed to have found...
