Solid old-fashioned seafood restaurant with a strong focus for rich and acidic dishes. This restaurant has been on my radar for years and what better way than to celebrate a special occasion with family. When you're on US-45 you'll be able to see the somewhat tacky crab pole standing by the restaurant with well lit signs indicating enter/exit with plenty of space to park. Walking in, the reception and staff are dressed very well. There's ambient music playing, and it's at an adequate volume to chat. Freshly baked bread was provided with prepackaged butter. Service between dishes seemed somewhat lax, though it was likely not their usual rush hour. We had their seafood sampler, which had some grill/charred salmon, calamari, shrimp, and scallops as an appetizer, then I had the white sea bass with lobster bisque and a side of rice to go with the entree. Don't sleep on that squeeze of lemon! Many of the dishes themselves are very rich, but the lemon elevates the richness of the dish by introducing some acidity into the meal. The grilled salmon in the appetizer was very tender, to the extent of tongue cutting it by roof of the mouth tender. The bisque is very creamy, but can easily be undermined by the soup crackers. I ended up using the lemon from the seafood sampler and thoroughly enjoyed the bisque. The sea bass as expected was fairly light but complements well to the sauteed mixed veg and creamy rice. Portions felt slightly inadequate at first, but made sense towards the end of the meal. I would not head here if I wanted to be filled up quickly. Overall an enjoyable experience.

We’ve go here occasionally, and this is a late review from one Saturday night dinner. First of all, wow!!! This place is huge!!! Parking is plenty— all the way to the side and back, so don’t worry about not having any spot during the weekend when you see lots of cars in the front. This restaurant has definitely been around for a long time. The interior has a classic seafood restaurant feeling, and again, it has plenty of tables and additional rooms every where you look. I agree with another review that this place has a different vibe from other regular restaurants. Nevertheless, everyone there is very friendly to our whole family. They make you very welcome and not awkward. Most of the patrons who eat there tend to be of older generations, but that just proves that this restaurant has many long time regular customers. That being said, the food is very good. It’s fresh and high-quality, which is essential when it comes to restaurant seafood. The flavors pop in an elegant way. We ordered shrimp de jonghe and escargot a la skordo, both of which you don’t find often at other restaurants around here. We also had stuffed shrimp bakers and fried calamari. As our main dish, we ordered Captain Selection, Sea Scallop and Soft shell crab, all of them are delicious. We finished up with Cheesecake. Overall the food is great, service is friendly and decently priced for a seafood dinner. We would go back again for sure :)

12-10-21 They did it again! The Lake Michigan Sailing club again had its annual holiday dinner party and it was a great success partly due to the good service and great food we received at Dovers Straits. Thanks to the very friendly managers. 2019 pre-Covid It had been well over twenty years since I last visited Dover Straits restaurant in Mundelein Illinois, and now I’m sorry for that. The venue itself is sea side sailing ships and Seaside wharfs, which is perfect for a sailing captain and commodore of Lake Michigan Sailing Club. We first started with fresh oysters and sautéed soft shell crabs. They were both delicious and sweet. I decided on the Chiopino a Mediterranean Sea food stew, which was taking a chance, since few places know how to execute a good Chiopino. I really enjoyed the whole dish along with the made at the table salad. It was so filling I couldn’t use the rest of the crispy bread for dipping. My wife enjoyed her Salmon and cauliflower as well. We have been back and we’re as delighted as we were the first time. It is a fun place, almost like the the old time supper clubs. It’s a good menu which should please most tastes. Please give this a thumbs up!

Visited Saturday night to celebrate our 10 year anniversary, the place was relatively busy, mostly blue hairs and a few families with young kids. I had noticed on the website mention of live music Friday and Saturday nights, and paid it little mind. What i was not expected was to be blasted with music so loud it was nearly impossible to hold a conversation across a table. We weren't even seated that closely to the band, there were also dance and disco lights flashing distracting green laser dots and obnoxious color flashes across the dining room. Again are we at an upscale restaurant or a nightclub?

As far as the food goes, the escargot was very good, fairly priced in todays market for 6 snails. the calamari was standard bar grade, unimpressive for a place that celebrates being a "top tier" sea food restaurant for over 40 years. lobster bisque soup and french onion were just good not great not terrible, but again less than what you'd expect from a place like this.

For the main course the 10 oz lobster tail was good, tasted fresh and was priced fairly for current market, it was served with an unimpressive side of perhaps 3 fork-fulls of green beans which were overcooked bland and limp. The new york strip steak on the other hand was the crowning jewel of disappointment, it was cooked as ordered, medium rare, was served with the same sad green beans, however it was completely tasteless, chewy and came with a large vein of gristle down the side the beef between it and the outside edge of the steak was absolutely inedible, and the rest of the steak was tasteless and chewy, it was difficult to cut with the cafeteria grade black plastic handled knife it was brought out with.

Service was fine, if not extremely brief. Overall the table side manner of the server was good during the small window of time it took place.

Unlikely to return or recommend. For a better seafood experience check out Port Edwards, especially if someone in your party is looking to dine from land...

I know you need to start with positive and slowly transfer to the negative....the place looks cute, the water was good....that's all the positive things I have to say. Went there for my b-day with my Mom and my daughter, we had previously looked at the menus on line and everything sounded good. We placed an order for a seafood sampler as an appetizer, the cost was $20, what we got was a few pieces of very sad looking somewhat burned calamari, 2 tiny pieces of salmon, 1 shrimp, 1 tinyyyy piece of another type of fish. it barely had any taste and didn't look appealing at all. For dinner, my daughter had stake, it was ok, but no flavor, at least it was not overcooked, came with 1 tiny piece of broccoli, 1 tiny piece of cauliflower and French fries. My mom's dinner was supposed to come with vegetables, but she was given pasta that she can't eat. When we mentioned to the waiter, we got some attitude and he kept telling us that it's on the menu, right in from of our eyes, when we asked for the hard copy of the menu for early bird specials and compared it to the early bird specials to what's on the web site, one said pasta, the other one said vegetables, he did bring us a side of vegetables that consisted of 1 tiny piece of broccoli, 1 tiny piece of cauliflower....neither vegetables nor her fish had much flavor. I went with the chefs special, the lobster tail was fine, shrimp had a weird taste to it and mushrooms were in some weird tasting sauce, i wasn't able to tell if it was spoiled or supposed to taste like this, but either way, it was bad, the rice was oversalted and it also included 1 tiny piece of broccoli, 1 tiny piece of cauliflower. This place makes a Red Lobster taste like a fancy restaurant, i was VERY disappointed with food, not sure how this place still has not closed, i can't imagine anyone coming back to eat...

What a wonderful place to host a small party! After a most frustrating and demeaning experience with the party coordinator at Maggiano's, I turned to Dover Straits to have a post-concert gathering for a Sunday dinner. (We had recently had a lovely dining experience at DS . . . and the Metropulos brothers even readily, graciously, and enthusiastically honored our 10-year-old gift certificates that night!) In making the arrangements, Aris did all that he could to get for me what I asked for and then some. When we arrived, we discovered that he did not seat us in a back area of the restaurant, but actually had reserved a special room for us, which had served another party earlier that day. The table was elegantly set and three servers were assigned to our party for the evening. As suggested, we had chosen a number of dinner options for our guests ahead of time and these were printed on a card, ready to be perused and selected. All specific drink orders were made perfectly. Each person's dinner was beautifully presented and equally as delicious. Nothing disappointed . . . right down to the desserts. They gave us no restrictions on time and did not hurry us along throughout the meal. The entire staff made us feel "at home", with all the comforts usually expected there. We would recommend highly not only their consistently excellent food offerings, but also the more-than-kind, altogether personal, and enthusiastically accommodating attitude that is displayed by EVERY one working in this establishment. The Metropulos brothers reallly know how to run a restaurant business . . . Maggiano's: you don't...
